2006 Annual Workshop of United College ¡X¡§The College System in University Education¡¨

The 2006 Annual Workshop of United College will be held on Friday, 24 February 2006 from 10:00am to 1:00pm at Lecture Theatre C1 of T C Cheng Building, United College.

The topic of this year's workshop is ¡§The College System in University Education¡¨. Panel speakers include Professor Sir James Mirrlees, Distinguished Professor-At-Large of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and 1996 Nobel

Laureate in Economics; Professor Edward, Kwan-yiu Chen, President, Lingnan University;  Professor Catharine B Hill , Provost, Williams College and Professor Suk-ying Wong, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. They will speak from their work and research experiences on the roles and   functions of the college system in the UK and US. Ms Lina, Hau-Yee Yan, Chairperson of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Convocation will be the moderator of the  Workshop.

Hong Kong-PRC-USA Budding Scholars Student Exchange Programme Selection Results

The selection panel of the College Student Exchange Programme Committee has completed interviewing applicants for the above programme on 5 January 2006.  The following students have been selected to participate in the Hong Kong-PRC-USA Budding Scholars Student Exchange Programme jointly organized by the University of Missouri-St Louis and Zhejiang University :

UC Shum Choi Sang Mentorship Programme Experience Sharing cum BBQ Day

To foster better communication among participants of the UC Shum Choi Sang Mentorship Programme, and also to assess the progress and headway made by the Programme, an experience-sharing session was held on 14 January 2006 at the Si Yuan Amenities Centre. The weekend event attracted some sixty mentors and mentees. Activities included group discussions, karaoke and a BBQ buffet.

College Scholarships News

Applications are now invited for the following scholarships/awards:

A.  Summer Programmes Awards 2005/2006 (application deadline: 24/2/2006)

a)  Dr Thomas T T Chen Scholarships for Study Projects in China                                                                                                             

These scholarships, HK$20,000 each, were established to enable students to visit China and carry out independent research on its society, economy, culture, environment  and education during the summer break. 

b)  Mr & Mrs K L Wong Overseas Scholarships

Five scholarships, in the amount of HK$10,000 each, were established through a donation by Mr & Mrs K L Wong to support undergraduate students of United College who are going to an Ivy League school or an institution of comparable repute in the USA, during the summer break, to read a short course of study or join a short training programme.

B. Postgraduate Scholarships 2006/2007(application deadline: 15/3/2006)

a)  S Leung Postgraduate Scholarship

Two scholarships, in the amount of HK$120,000 each, are awarded to graduates of United College to pursue full-time postgraduate programmes in reputable overseas educational institutions. Preferences will be given to those students who plan to pursue a higher degree in human-service-related discipline. Students indicating willingness to return to Hong Kong after studies overseas will have a distinct advantage.

b)  Sir Run Run Shaw Postgraduate Scholarship(s)

One to two scholarships, in a total amount of HK$40,000, will be awarded to fresh graduates of United College to start off their first year of postgraduate studies at recognized overseas universities.  

c)  T C Cheng Postgraduate Scholarship(s)

One to two scholarships, in a total amount of HK$50,000, will be awarded to graduates of United College to pursue postgraduate studies at recognized universities in Hong Kong or abroad. Applicants are preferably under 26 years of age.

 

C.      College Athletic Awards 2005/2006 (application deadline: 15/3/2006) 

A total of 31 College athletic awards, ranging in value from HK $1,000 to HK$10,000, will be tenable for the year 2005/2006. These prizes are to be awarded to students who have demonstrated exceptional athletic and sports abilities or who have made significant contributions towards the promotion of on-campus sports activities during the year. Applications and/or nominations should be made through the College's Physical Education Unit.

Creative Student Activity Award Programme Now Opens for Application

To encourage students to organize new or creative activities, the College has established the Creative Student Activity Award Programme since 2002. The aims of the programmes are: 1) encouraging students or student bodies to organize quality activities; 2) encouraging students / student bodies to be more active in organizing activities; and 3) promoting students¡¦ participation in College life. The Programme for 2006 is now open for application. Students of United College or student organizations registered with the United College Student Union are eligible to apply. Interested parties should submit the applications and activity proposals to the Dean of Students¡¦ Office on or before 18 March 2006.

The winning students or organization(s) will be awarded up to HK$20,000 of subsidy for organizing the programme. A detailed activity and financial reports must be submitted to the College upon completion of the programme. This award programme is funded by the United College T C Cheng Memorial Fund.  Application forms are available at the Dean of Students' Office or from the College hompage.
