聯合書院五十周年金禧院慶活動啟動典禮

聯合書院五十周年金禧院慶活動啟動典禮已於二零零六年九月十五日上午十一時卅分假大學邵逸夫堂舉行。 啟動儀式後隨即展開由美國普林斯頓大學地球物理動力學研究所的劉雅章教授(一九七四年物理系聯合校友)主講的書院「金禧校友講座」，講題為「厄爾尼諾」縱橫談，逾千名書院校董、師生及校友出席了當日的盛典。

除上述慶祝活動外，聯合書院以「務實創新，聯合邁進」主題，籌辦了一連串的慶祝活動於金禧年度陸續推出。

United College Golden Jubilee Anniversary Activities Kick-off Ceremony

The United College Golden Jubilee Anniversary Activities Kick-off ceremony and the First Golden Jubilee Alumni Talk by Professor Lau Ngar Cheung, Gabriel, (UC 1974 Physics alumnus ) from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, Princeton University held on 15 September 2006 was attended by over 1000 College trustees, staff, students and alumni. The Ceremony marked the launching of a whole series of celebration activities in this academic year.

Apart from the above activities, the College has organized different kinds of programme along the 50th Anniversary slogan "Together We Advance, United We Innovate".

思源廣場正式開幕

聯合書院思源廣場已於二零零六年九月十五日正式開幕。是日蒙思源基金會主席陳曾燾博士伉儷，香港中文大學校長劉遵義教授，聯合書院校董會主席岑才生先生，聯合書院校友會會長張煊昌博士，聯合書院院長馮國培教授與及聯合書院學生會會長陳栢生同學蒞臨主禮，並蒙多位校外嘉賓及校董撥冗親臨觀禮。此外亦有校友、大學及書院同仁等近百人到賀，場面十分熱鬧。典禮後於陳震夏宿舍舉行茶會。

思源廣場蒙思源基金會捐贈港幣六百萬元資助興建，毗鄰陳震夏宿舍，可容納三百五十人作戶外活動及表演。

Opening of the Si Yuan Amphitheatre

The Opening Ceremony of the Si Yuan Amphitheatre took place on 15 September 2006. The officiating party comprised Dr. and Mrs. Thomas T.T. Chen, Chairman of the Si Yuan Foundation; Prof. Lawrence J. Lau, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Mr. Shum Choi Sang, Chairman of the United College Board of Trustees; Dr. Thomas H.C. Cheung, President of the United College Alumni Association; Prof. K.P. Fung, Head of United College and Mr. Chan Pak Sang, President of the UC Student Union. Attending the ceremony were trustees of the College, officers of the University, alumni and friends of the College as well as guests of the donor. The ceremony began with speeches and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and concluded with a tea reception.

The Si Yuan Amphitheatre is an open-air, 350-seat arena purpose-built to stage concerts, plays, debates and other such public and cultural activities.  Situated in the centre of the United College campus, on a sylvan slope next to the Chan Chun Ha Hostel, the construction of the Si Yuan Amphitheatre was made possible by a generous donation of 6 million dollars from the Si Yuan Foundation.

United College 50^th Anniversary Souvenirs

To celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the College, the College has prepared the 50^th Anniversary commemorative Umbrella and Environmental Bag to College Staff and Students respectively.  Please collect this special gift at the College's Dean of Students' Office, 2/F, Tsang Shiu Tim Building.

聯合書院五十周年金禧院慶典禮

書院五十周年金禧院慶典禮訂於十月二十日（星期五）上午十一時卅分假大學邵逸夫堂舉行。書院校董會主席岑才生先生及香港特別行政區政府教育統籌局局長李國章教授將擔任主禮嘉賓，並致勉辭及頒授書院獎學金。

典禮後，書院隨即於聯合校園舉行院慶生日會，書院教職員聯誼會將送出五十磅大蛋糕致賀。生日會後，書院即於張祝珊師生康樂中心頂樓文怡閣舉行院慶午餐。

為慶祝書院金禧院慶五十周年，書院學生會亦籌備了連串活動一同慶賀:

Golden Jubilee Anniversary Ceremony

The Ceremony marking the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of United College will be held on Friday, 20 October 2006 (Friday) at 11:30 am at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall of the University.  Mr Shum Choi Sang, SBS, JP, Chairman of the United College Board of Trustees and Professor Arthur K C Li, GBS, JP, Secretary for Education and Manpower, The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, will officiate at the Ceremony and present College scholarships.

Immediately after the ceremony, there will be a birthday party on the College campus.  The College Staff Association will donate a 50-pound birthday cake for the occasion.  The day's highlight will be the Anniversary Luncheon at the College Staff Common Room at 1:15pm.

The Student Union has also organized a series of activities to celebrate the occasion as highlighted below:

聯合書院金禧院慶音樂會

是次金禧院慶音樂會以「明德新民．氣象萬千」為主題。音樂會分兩部份，上半場以中樂為主，下半場為西樂及合唱，以表現聯合書院貫通古今，融會中西的學風。表演嘉賓及節目包括：

二零零六至零七年度「到訪傑出學人」羅蘭德教授 (一九九五年諾貝爾化學獎得主)

香港中文大學聯合書院金禧年度首位「到訪傑出學人」為美國加州大學爾灣分校Donald Bren化學及地球系統科學講座教授羅蘭德(F. Sherwood Rowland)，他將於十月十三日至廿三日到訪香港。

羅蘭德教授於一九二七年在美國德拉瓦州(Delaware)出生，一九四八年在俄亥俄州韋斯利恩大學(Wesleyan University)取得學士學位，他隨即進入芝加哥大學研究院，師承諾貝爾獎得主利比(Willard Libby)教授。羅蘭德教授曾任教於普林斯頓大學及堪薩斯大學，繼而獲加州大學爾灣分校禮聘，並於一九六五年出任該校化學系系主任，時值社會對污染及環境問題日益重視。

羅蘭德教授集中研究大氣的濃度，追蹤化學物質與及它們對大氣的影響。他與穆連教授(Mario Molina)斷定氯氟碳化合物(chlorofluorocarbons)是導致臭氧層損耗的原兇。基於羅蘭德教授的研究成果，全世界二十六個國家於一九八七年共同簽署「蒙特婁破壞臭氧層物質管制議定書(Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer)」，進一步提高大眾對臭氧層問題的關注。一九九五年，羅蘭德教授、穆連教授及克魯森教授 (Paul Crutzen)三位共同分享了諾貝爾化學獎的殊榮。除了氯氟碳化合物外，羅蘭德教授亦研究甲烷氣體(methane gas)及其對大氣的沖擊，甲烷氣體引發「溫室效應」，導致地球氣溫上升。

羅蘭德教授學術地位崇高，獲獎無數，其中包括普林斯頓大學及芝加哥大學頒授的榮譽博士學位、日本環境及能源獎(Japan Prize in Environment and Energy)、泰拿國際(Tyler World Prize)生態獎及國際環境毒理學和化學學會(Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry)的卡森獎(Rachel Carson Award)等。

羅蘭德教授是次訪問期間將主持兩次公開講座，講題及詳情如下：

第一講：臭氧平流層耗損 (Stratospheric Ozone Depletion)

2006-07 Distinguished Visiting Scholar – Professor F. Sherwood Rowland (1995 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry)

Professor F. Sherwood Rowland, Donald Bren Research Professor of Chemistry and Earth System Science, University of California, Irvine, U.S.A., will visit United College between 13 and 23 October 2006 as the first Distinguished Visiting Scholar in the College’s 50th Anniversary Year.

Professor Rowland was born in 1927 in Delaware, Ohio.  He received his B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1948.  He did his graduate study at the University of Chicago where he received the mentorship of Willard Libby, the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who developed the Carbon-14 Dating technique.  Having Held academic posts at Princeton University and University of Kansas, Professor Rowland eventually received a professorship at the University of California Irvine, and became the chair of the Chemistry department in 1965.  At the time issues involving pollution and the status of the environment were coming to the forefront.

Professor Rowland became involved in studying atmospheric concentrations, especially trace chemicals in the atmosphere and its effects on it.  Together with Professor Mario Molina, they identified that CFC(chlorofluorocarbons) were responsible for the depletion of the ozone layer.  Professor Rowland's research became the foundation for the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer by 26 countries in 1987, and a growing public awareness of the ozone layer problem.  He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Professor Mario Molina and Professor Paul Crutzen in 1995.  Professor Rowland has also been investigating methane gas and its impact on the atmosphere.  Methane gas has been shown to contribute to the "greenhouse effect" which serves to raise the temperature of the earth's atmosphere.

Professor Rowland has received honorary doctorate degrees from Princeton and the University of Chicago. Among Professor Rowland's awards are the prestigious Japan Prize in Environment and Energy, Tyler World Prize in Ecology and the Rachel Carson Award from the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.

During his visit to United College, Professor Rowland will deliver two public lectures.  The details are as follows:

News of the College Assembly of Fellows

The College Assembly of Fellows, at its 95^th Meeting held on 29 September 2006, approved the following appointments:

1  College Tutors

    Re-appointment of Mr Chan Yiu Mo and Mr Wong Kui Hung as College Tutors from 2 October 2006 to 1 October 2007.

2  College Representative in University Council

    Professor Chang Song Hing has been re-elected as College Representative in University Council for a further term of three years from 5 September 2006 to 4 September 2009.
