Celebrations of United College 50th Anniversary - The Calligraphy and Recitations from Professor So Man-jock (1921-1997)

Professor So Man-jock (1921-1997) was a renowned scholar of the Chinese canons. From 1965, he was Professor of Chinese at United College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he lectured on the canons and philosophies of the early masters as well as on shi and ci poetry, literary criticism and on Chinese educational thought. He enjoyed great popularity throughout his lectureship.

Professor So received a fine education as befits a member of a cultivated household. Since early childhood he was taught not only the classics but also calligraphy; his style being characterised by a classical elegance that harked back to two earlier generations of his family.

Professor So had generous instincts in the art of reciting classical pieces and was determined to advocate what is generally known as 'rhythmic recitation'. He was a popular guest of honour on both sides of the Taiwan straits.

A classical poet in his own right, Professor So was also an avid promoter of poetry. He gathered some of his students to form the 'Ming Society' where he continued his teaching on the classics in general and on classical poetry in particular.

“Fifty Years of Cultural and Educational Development in Hong Kong” Exhibition Period Extended

United College is pleased to announce that the exhibition period of “Fifty Years of Cultural and Educational Development in Hong Kong” is extended to 25 June 2007 owing to encouraging response. The exhibition is co-organized by Leisure and Cultural Services Department and United College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, at the Hong Kong Museum of History 1/F Lobby. Free Admission to public.

There is a close relationship between education and culture. After World War II, the Hong Kong Government was confronted with severe difficulties in developing education, so she took an active part in promoting education. The mode of education diversified and the development of Chinese education was emphasized. In 1956, United College was founded by the amalgamation of five private colleges, Canton Overseas, Kwang Hsia, Wah Kiu, Wen Hua and Ping Jing. In 1963, The Chinese University of Hong Kong was inaugurated with United College as one of the three foundation colleges. More and more tertiary institutions were formed, and students were given more opportunities for further studies. Meanwhile, Hong Kong is a mixture of different cultures, fully affected by Western and Japanese cultures in the early time, and Korean culture in the recent years. With the development of scientific technology and the improvement of living standards, Hong Kong people have more demands in the social culture, enhancing the growth of the local culture.  Through representative illustrations, photos and lucid descriptions, this exhibition outlines the cultural and educational development in Hong Kong during the past 50 years from 1956 to 2006, and examines the interrelationships between United College and the local society.
