College Member Assessed Quake-affected Areas of Sichuan in Mid May

¡@

College Member, Professor Emily Y Y CHAN from School of Public Health, visited Sichuan with Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), an independent international medical humanitarian organization, on 16 May 2008. Professor Chan assessed the immediate health needs in several quake-affected areas of Sichuan to enable MSF to target its response.

She joined MSF in 1998 and took part in MSF's medical and humanitarian projects in Guangxi, China and Kosovo. In 1998, she assisted the team to make assessment, and set relief plans after the massive flood in Guangxi. Professor Chan is currently an advisory Committee Member of the Board of MSF Hong Kong.

¡@

After Professor Chan returned to Hong Kong, she shared about her experience and suggested ideas of how the School of Public Health can provide immediate and long-term assistance to victims of catastrophic events, in the fourth session of the School's Humanitarian Initiative Seminar Series, held on 21 May 2008 and 3 July 2008.  Please visit www.sph.cuhk.edu.hk/phhi for details.
