聯合書院五十二周年院慶活動

書院五十二周年院慶典禮訂於10月17日（星期五）上午11時30分假大學邵逸夫堂舉行。書院校董會主席岑才生先生及香港特別行政區政府運輸及房屋局副局長邱誠武先生(82/生化)將擔任主禮嘉賓，並致勉辭。

典禮後，書院隨即於聯合校園舉行院慶生日會，書院教職員聯誼會並送出大蛋糕致賀。生日會後，便於張祝珊師生康樂大樓頂樓文怡閣舉行院慶午餐。

為慶祝書院院慶，書院學生會亦籌備了連串活動一同慶賀：

United College 52nd Anniversary Activities

The 52nd Anniversary Ceremony of the College will be held on Friday, 17 October 2008 at 11:30 am at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall of the University. Mr Shum Choi-sang, SBS (82/BCH), JP, Chairman of the College Board of Trustees and Mr Yau Shing-mu, Under Secretary for Transport and Housing, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, will officiate at the Ceremony.

Immediately after the Ceremony, there will be a birthday party on the College campus. The College Staff Association will donate a birthday cake for the occasion. The day's highlight will be the Anniversary Luncheon at the College Staff Common Room at 1:15 pm.

The College Student Union will also host a series of activities to celebrate the occasion as highlighted below:

感謝張煊昌博士晚宴

張煊昌博士於本年10月自聯合書院校友會榮休，本院校董會主席岑才生先生為感謝張煊昌博士四十四年來對書院校友事務的傑出貢獻，於2008年10月6日(星期一)晚上7時正假香港上海總會設晚宴，並致送紀念品予張博士作留念。當晚二十多位校董和院務委員出席。岑主席及馮國培院長在席上向張博士致謝詞和代表出席嘉賓致送紀念品，並期盼張博士繼續以基金會主席和校董會副主席的身份，帶領書院再創高峰。

Dinner to Honour Dr Thomas H C Cheung

After 44 years of sterling contribution to alumni affairs of United College, Dr Thomas H C Cheung has decided to step down from his post as Chairman of the Alumni Association of United College this October. To show the College's heartfelt appreciation for Dr Cheung's leadership over all these years, Mr Shum Choi-sang, Chairman of the Board of Trustee hosted a dinner at the Shanghai Fraternity Association in Central on 6 Oct 2008. More than twenty Trustees and Fellows of the College attended the dinner to express their gratitude to Dr Cheung. Mr Shum and Prof Fung Kwok-pui, College Head, gave moving speeches to recount the selfless services Dr Cheung has rendered to the College in the past, and look forward to many more years of his staunch support as Dr Cheung continue to lead the College in the capacities as Chairman of the College Endowment Fund Committee and the Vice Chairman of the College Board of Trustee.

到訪傑出學人秦大河院士

2008至09年度的「到訪傑出學人」為中國科學院院士暨原中國氣象局局長秦大河教授，他將於10月13日至19日到訪香港。

秦大河院士是國際著名的氣候和全球變化研究專家。他現任冰凍圈科學國家重點實驗室主任、政府間氣候變化專門委員會（IPCC）主席團成員、第四次評估報告第一工作組聯合主席、國際地理聯合會副主席、中國氣象學會理事長、第十一屆全國政協人口資源環境委員會副主任。秦院士原任中國氣象局局長和國家氣候委員會主任，為國家的氣象氣候事業作出重大貢獻。今年6月，秦院士被授予第五十三屆國際氣象組織（WMO）獎，是獲得WMO最高榮譽的第二位中國人。去年12月，他作為IPCC代表團主要成員，代表中國科學家出席了諾貝爾和平獎頒獎儀式。

秦大河院士長期從事冰凍圈與全球變化研究，多次參加及主持南、北極、青藏高原和中國西部地區的科學考察和研究，取得了許多創新性成果。他系統研究了南極冰蓋雪層的"變質"過程，從定量分析入手，總結出了雪到冰川冰演化過程的地域分異規律；他對南極冰蓋表層雪內的物理、化學過程與氣候環境記錄之間關係進行了深入的研究，有關降水中穩定同位素比率的分佈規律與溫度的關係、水汽和多種雜質來源與輸送路徑的研究結果，是迄今為止國際上對南極冰雪表層最廣泛、最全面的研究成果，得到了國內外同行的認可，使中國南極冰川學研究躍登國際先進行列；他率先在中國西部開展雪冰現代過程和雪冰生物地球化學迴圈實驗觀測研究，論證了我國山地冰芯中氣候環境指標的適用性；他對珠穆朗瑪峰地區冰川變化、環境變遷和冰芯綜合研究，揭示了地球最高海拔地區近/現代氣候環境的變化特徵。秦院士主持《中國氣候與環境演變》和《中國西部環境演變評估》研究，產生廣泛影響，促進了我國與國際氣候變化研究工作的不斷進步，為推動全球變化研究做出了突出貢獻。

秦大河院士是次訪問期間，將主持公開講座及出席學術活動，講題及詳情如下：

Distinguished Visiting Scholar Professor Qin Dahe

Professor Qin Dahe, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and former director of China Meteorological Administration, will visit Hong Kong from 13 to 19 October 2008 as the College's Distinguished Visiting Scholar in 2008-09.

Professor Qin is an internationally renowned climatologist and expert on global change. He is currently the Director of State Key Laboratory of Cryoshperic Sciences, Member of IPCC Bureau, Co-Chair of Working Group I for the Fourth IPCC Assessment Report, Vice President of International Geographical Union, President of Chinese Meteorological Society, and Vice Chairman of Commission on Population, Resource and Environment of the 11th National Political Consultative . In June this year he received the 53rd World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Prize and became the second Chinese recipient of this highest award of WMO. As a key member of IPCC Bureau, he represented Chinese scientists to attend the award ceremony of the Nobel Peace Prize of 2007 last December.

Over the past three decades, Professor Qin has been actively and productively engaged in cryospheric and global change studies. He has participated and taken a leading role in numerous scientific exploration and research projects in the South Pole, North Pole, Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and the western region of China. He has systematically studied the "decay" process of ice cap in the South Pole and used a quantitative approach to characterise the regional patterns of the evolution of snow to glacier ice. His research has investigated the relationship between the physical/chemical processes in the surface snow layer of South Pole ice cap and the environmental records of climate. The research findings in several areas, such as the relationship between the distribution of stable isotopes in precipitation and air temperature, sources and pathways of water vapor and multiple impurities, are still the most comprehensive and in-depth results of research on South Pole ice cap. Professor Qin has carried out pioneering work on the monitoring and experiment of modern processes and biogeochemical cycling in snow and ice cover, demonstrating the applicability and validity of climatic signals derived from mountainous ice cores. His research on glacial evolution, modern environmental changes and ice cores in the Mt. Qomolangma (Everest) area has discovered the characteristics of modern climate change in the highest elevations of the earth. Under the leadership of Professor Qin, studies on "Climate of China and Environmental Change" and "Assessment of Environmental Changes in China's West" have produced numerous influential results and made important contributions to global change research.

書院聚會——2008年9月19日

聯合書院校董暨校友殷巧兒女士在9月19日的書院聚會演講中以遊戲帶出主題，說明做人處事「長勝之道」是達到「雙贏」的局面。而「雙贏」則要有包括誠信、合作、自律、包容和智慧的條件和價值觀。如何建立最好的「雙贏」信念，就要靠日常的心理學習，亦即「德育」。「德育」幫助一個人建立自己的價值觀，使人們追求「長遠的成就、永恆的喜悅」。而「長勝之道」，就可以憑自已而找到。

College Assembly—19 September 2008

Ms Lina H Y Yan, College Trustee and Advisor of United College Alumni Association, illustrated the main theme of her Talk "Be a Perpetual Winner" with a game, and concluded that the only way to become a perpetual winner is through achieving win-win situations.Trust, cooperation, self-discipline and wisdom are essential qualities in attaining "win-win" state. Through moral education, these qualities along the desire to pursue long-term success and eternal bliss can be internalized. As a responsible moral being, one holds the secret to be a perpetual winner.

劍橋大學伊曼紐爾學院院士Dr Richard Barnes 及Dr Robert Henderson於2008年9月26日到訪聯合書院，與院長馮國培教授及院務主任李雷寶玲女士就書院工作作經驗交流。
