聯合書院五十二周年院慶紀盛

書院五十二周年院慶典禮及多項慶祝活動已於10月17日圓滿舉行。書院及學生會攜手共賀書院生日，舉行了一連串活動，包括10月10日下午舉行的「聯合起跑」、10月15日舉行的「大笪地」及於17日正日舉行的五十二周年院慶典禮，嘉賓及學生逾千人出席參與盛會。典禮後，書院隨即於校園舉行由學生會主持的院慶生日會。會上除有傳統醒獅助慶外，書院教職員聯誼會更送出一個大蛋糕，倍增喜氣。

慶祝活動的高潮為17日晚於校園舉行的千人宴，參加人數逾千人。晚會節目安排豐富，除了樂隊、舞蹈、花式跳繩等表演及幸運抽獎外，還有壓軸嘉賓農夫樂隊及江若琳小姐演唱流行曲多首，令全場盡歡。當晚所有抽獎禮物均由熱心書院同寅、校董及校友贊助，書院校友會還慷慨送出全場燒豬。晚會直至十一時多才在全場盡歡的氣氛中結束。

United College 52^nd Anniversary Celebrations

Weeks of celebration activities including the Opening Ceremony, UC Fun Run, Open Bazaar and the 52^nd Anniversary Ceremony were successfully concluded on 17 October 2008. Over a thousand students and guests of the College attended the Anniversary Ceremony at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. The Ceremony was followed by a Birthday Party held on the College campus. The celebration reached its climax with the lion dance by the College Chinese Martial Arts Society and the cutting of birthday cake sponsored by the College Staff Association.

The highlight of the anniversary activities was the "feast-for-a-thousand" held in the evening. Over 1,000 College staff, students, alumni and guests enjoyed the dinner. College Trustees, alumni and staff donated an assortment of prizes for the raffle and the College Alumni Association sponsored barbecue pigs for the banquet. It was a wonderful night with a variety show performed by students and pop singers FAMA and Miss Elanne Kwong.

到訪傑出學人——秦大河院士

聯合書院2008至09年度的「到訪傑出學人」為中國科學院院士暨冰凍圈科學國家重點實驗室主任秦大河教授，他已於10月13日至19日期間訪問香港。

秦大河院士是國際著名的氣候和全球變化研究專家。他亦兼任政府間氣候變化專門委員會（IPCC）主席團成員、第四次評估報告第一工作組聯合主席、國際地理聯合會副主席、中國氣象學會理事長，以及第十一屆全國政協人口資源環境委員會副主任。秦院士原任中國氣象局局長和國家氣候委員會主任，為國家的氣象氣候事業作出重大貢獻。今年6月，秦院士被授予第五十三屆國際氣象組織（WMO）獎，是獲得WMO最高榮譽的第二位中國人。去年12月，他作為IPCC代表團主要成員，代表中國科學家出席了諾貝爾和平獎頒獎儀式。

秦大河院士長期從事冰凍圈與全球變化研究，多次參加或主持南北極、青藏高原和中國西部地區的科學考察和研究，取得了許多創新性成果。他系統研究了南極冰蓋雪層的「變質」過程，從定量分析入手，總結出了由雪到冰川冰演化過程的地域分異規律。他對南極冰蓋表層雪內的物理、化學過程與氣候環境記錄之間的關係進行了深入研究，例如降水中穩定同位素比率的分佈規律與溫度的關係，以及水汽和多種雜質來源與輸送路徑的研究結果，均是迄今為止國際上對南極冰雪表層最廣泛、最全面的研究成果，獲得國內外專家的認同，使中國南極冰川學研究躍登國際先進行列。

秦大河院士是次訪問期間，主持了三個公開講座、一個學術研討會及一個夜話，題目包括「全球變暖與21世紀中國的社會經濟發展」、「氣候變化中的天氣災害與中國的可持續發展」、「中國南極第一人：從極地考察看全球變暖」、「IPCC的過去、現在與未來」及「我的南極探險及地學人生」。秦院士強調要廣泛開展國際交流合作，以處理好經濟增長、社會發展、保護環境三者關係為出發點，增強可持續發展能力。

United College Distinguished Visiting Scholar—Professor Qin Dahe

Professor Qin Dahe, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director, State Key Laboratory of Cryoshperic Sciences, visited United College, the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 13 to 19 October as the College's Distinguished Visiting Scholar in 2008-09.

Professor Qin is an internationally renowned climatologist and expert on global change. He is also member of IPCC Bureau, Co-Chair of Working Group I for the Fourth IPCC Assessment Report, Vice President of International Geographical Union, President of Chinese Meteorological Society, and Vice Chairman of Commission on Population, Resource and Environment of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. In June this year he received the 53rd World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Prize and became the second Chinese recipient of this highest award of WMO. Last December as a key member of IPCC Bureau, he represented Chinese scientists to attend the award ceremony of the Nobel Peace Prize of 2007.

Over the past three decades, Professor Qin has been actively and productively engaged in cryospheric and global change studies. He has participated and taken a leading role in numerous scientific exploration and research projects in the South Pole, North Pole, Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and the western region of China. He has systematically studied the "decay" process of ice cap in the South Pole and used a quantitative approach to characterize the regional patterns of the evolution of snow to glacier ice. His research has investigated the relationship between the physical/chemical processes in the surface snow layer of South Pole ice cap and the environmental records of climate. The research findings in several areas, such as the relationship between the distribution of stable isotopes in precipitation and air temperature, sources and pathways of water vapor and multiple impurities, are still the most comprehensive and in-depth results of research on South Pole ice cap.

During his visit to United College, Professor Qin has delivered three public lectures, one academic seminar and one night talk.  The topics included "Global warming and socio-economic development of China in the 21st Century", "Weather hazards in a changing climate and their relevance to China's sustainability", "The first Chinese at South Pole: Global warming from the perspective of polar exploration", "Past, present, and future of IPCC" and "My South Pole exploration and academic life".  Professor Qin emphasised that facing the challenges of climate change and hazardous weather, research and innovation through international cooperation would play a very important role in enhancing China's sustainability through maintaining a good balance among economic growth, societal development and environmental protection.

渣打馬拉松2009──聯合書院隊

Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2009—United College Team

The Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2009 will take place on Sunday, 8 February 2009. To encourage our students, staff members and alumni to participate, United College Task Force on Health Promotion, College Life Committee and Staff Association will prepare a T-shirt as souvenir for each United College athlete and offer partial sponsorship to participating students, as well as organise relevant talks and Trial Run sessions. 2007-08 Graduation Ceremony

The 2007-08 UC Graduation Ceremony will be held on Thursday, 4 December 2008 at 12:30 pm at the University's Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. 「香港相思──余光中的文學生命」

為推廣中國現代文學，聯合書院、文學院及大學圖書館系統將於本年12月份，合辦「香港相思──余光中的文學生命」余光中著作、手稿、相片展覽會。余光中教授是一位具有廣泛影響力的文學大師，以現代詩和散文享有盛譽。他對香港中文大學貢獻良多，於1974年應聘聯合書院中文系至85年擔任香港中文大學中國語言及文學系教授，於2003年獲香港中文大學頒授榮譽文學博士學位，現為台灣中山大學光華講座教授。

"Memories of Hong Kong—The Literary Life of Yu Kwang Chung"

To promote Modern Chinese Literature, United College, the Faculty of Arts, and the University Library System will jointly organise a "Memories of Hong Kong–The Literary Life of Yu Kwang Chung" Exhibition to display various writings, manuscripts and precious photos of Prof Yu in December of 2008. A well-known scholar and literary master, Professor Yu made tremendous contribution to the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He joined United College in 1974 and served as Reader at the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of the Chinese University of Hong Kong until 1985. He received an honorary doctorate of literature from the University in 2003 and is currently the Kung Hua Chair Professor of Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan.
