Budding Scholars from Tsinghua University

 

A delegation from Tsinghua University is now visiting the College under the College Budding Scholars Exchange Programme.  The students from Tsinghua University will conduct a presentation on 18 February on the topic of "The Impact of the Beijing Olympics on China's Societal and Social Development". Apart from presenting their research results, the delegation will also visit different government offices and organisations such as The 2009 East Asian Games (Hong Kong) Limited, Planning Department, Legislative Council, The Hong Kong Jockey Club and the Hong Kong Museum of History.

Art Workshop on Sculpture¡VPortraiture in Clay

 

Mr Matthew Buckner, Visiting Artist of Chung Chi College and United College in 2008-09, will visit the Colleges in March and April 2009.  During his visit, Mr Buckner will offer a workshop entitled "Portraiture in Clay". Details of the workshop are as follows:

Creative Student Activity Award Programme Now Opens for Application

 

To encourage students to organize new or creative activities, the College has established the Creative Student Activity Award Programme since 2002. The aims of the programmes are: 1) encouraging students or student bodies to organize quality activities; 2) encouraging students / student bodies to be more active in organizing activities; and 3) promoting students' participation in College life.

 

The Programme for 2009 is now open for application. Students of United College or student organizations registered with the United College Student Union are eligible to apply. Interested parties should submit the applications and activity proposals to the Dean of Students' Office on or before Friday, 13 March 2009.

 

The total amount of the annual award is HK$60,000. The winning students or organization(s) will be subsidized according to their programme proposals. Detailed activity and financial reports must be submitted to the College upon completion of the programme.  This award programme is funded by the United College T C Cheng Memorial Fund.  Application forms are available at the Dean of Students' Office or from the College homepage . Head's Night Talk¡VCollege/University Affairs Series

 

Organized by the College's Dean of Students' Office, the Head's Night Talk ¡V College/University Affairs Series was held on Monday, 12 January 2009 at the Adam Schall Hall. The focus of the talk was on exchange programmes and activities, guest invited was Professor Chan Kam-tai, Chairman of the College's Student Exchange Programmes Committee. Other than exchange matters, students raised questions on scholarships, hostel life, student

The two young alumni Mr Wat and Mr Leung shared their precious experience of cycling round Taiwan for a fund raising for the Courage and contribution Award.  The speakers would like to encourage the current students to have the courage to try and to take actions for self-development as well as for the betterment of the society.  Many alumni and staff members of the College have been moved by Mr Wat and Mr Leung and donated to support their trip of

Taiwan.

The Debate Match was held at Si Yuan Amphitheatre with an audience of over 200 students. The winning team for the Match was Hong Kong Shue Yan University who was against the motion. The Q & A session of the audience to the two teams was well received.

GEU 4011 Pre-course Registration and Class Arrangements in 2009-10

 

GEU 4011 is a compulsory 3-unit student-oriented teaching course for all United College final year students, offered in the first term of 2009-10. The pre-course registration work now begins.

 

All students to be graduated in 2009-10 should take this course, except for Medical students, as they will take GEU 4011Y in their third year of study organized by the Faculty Office, Faculty of Medicine. Pre-course registration of Medical students will be announced to their year two students by the Faculty Office.

 

Enrolled students should form a group of 4 students on their own, the best combination is to have 4 students from different Faculties, and the minimum requirement is at most 2 students from one Faculty, with different majors. The group leader will be responsible to input the group information from 9 February to 20 February 2009 via the web-based system at http://mmlab.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk/ucgeu/.  For those groups without 4 members or single students, please also submit the most updated information to the system before the deadline. Late submissions will be subjected to penalties.

Tea Gathering for New Office-bearers of Affiliated Student Organizations

 

New executive committee members of all College affiliated student organizations were invited to a tea gathering on Thursday, 15 January 2009 hosted by the College Head, Professor Fung Kwok-pui. About 60 students attended the gathering. Other than Professor Fung, Professor Stephen H S Wong, Dean of Students, Mrs Christina Li, College Secretary, and officers from the Dean of Students' Office also shown up at the gathering. The activity aimed that providing an opportunity for student leaders to meet and exchange ideas for the new year, so as to strengthen communication and cooperation among the student bodies.

College Scholarships News

 

Applications are now invited for the following scholarships:

 

1.   United College Ming De Scholarship (NEW)

This Scholarship, in the amount of HK$50,000, was established by the College to honour final year a UC student for having achieved academic excellence, manifested leadership ability as well as performed outstanding services to the College and the Community at large during his/her tenure at the University. The recipient will additionally be honoured with a public citation at the College's Anniversary Ceremony; a record of his/her accomplishments will be kept in the College archives. The application deadline is 2 March 2009.

 

2.   United College Xin Min Scholarship (NEW)

This Scholarship, in the amount of HK$50,000, was established by the College to honour a final year UC student who has performed the best service for the benefit of the College and the community throughout his/her University study while at the same time demonstrating a capability for sustained academic advancement. The recipient will additionally be honoured with a public citation at the College's Anniversary Ceremony; a record of his/her

accomplishments will be kept in the College archives. The application deadline is 2 March 2009.

 

3.   United College GOAL Programme¡Vfor non-local studies:

(i)   Mr & Mrs K L Wong Overseas Scholarships

Five scholarships, in the amount of HK$10,000 each, were established through a donation by Mr & Mrs K L Wong to support undergraduate students of United College who are going to an Ivy League school or an institution of comparable repute in the USA, during the summer break, to read a short course of study or join a short training programme. The application deadline is 23 February 2009.

 

(ii)  Dr Thomas T T Chen Scholarships for Study Projects in China

These scholarships, HK$20,000 each, were established to enable students to visit China and carry out independent research on its society, economy, culture, environment and education during the summer break. The application deadline is 23 February 2009.

 

(iii) GOAL Programme Non-local Exchange Scholarships

These scholarships, up to HK$10,000 each, were established by the College Endowment Fund Committee to support undergraduate students of United College who are going to participate in one-year or half-year non-local exchange programmes organized by the Chinese University or by United College. The application period will be from 23 February to 16 March 2009.

 

(iv) CNOOC Exchange Scholarships

These scholarships were established through a donation by the China National Offshore Oil Corporation to provide financial assistance to United College students from Mainland China who intend to participate in an overseas exchange programme organized by the Chinese University or by United College. The overseas tenure can be for one term or for the whole academic year. The value of each scholarship is expected to cover roughly one-third of the estimated cost of living during the student's stay in the host country. The application period will be from 23 February to 16 March 2009.

 

4.  United College Postgraduate Scholarships:

(i)  S. Leung Postgraduate Scholarship

This scholarship, in the amount of HK$120,000, is awarded to graduates of United College to pursue full-time postgraduate programme in reputable overseas educational instution. Preferences will be given to those students who plan to pursue a higher degree in human-service-related discipline. Students indicating willingness to return to Hong Kong after studies overseas will have a distinct advantage. The application period will be from 23 February to 16 March 2009.

 

(ii) Sir Run Run Shaw Postgraduate Scholarship(s)

One to two scholarships, in a total amount of HK$40,000, will be awarded to fresh graduates of United College to start off their first year of postgraduate studies at recognized overseas universities. The application period will be from 23 February to 16 March 2009.

 

(iii) T.C. Cheng Postgraduate Scholarship(s)

One to two scholarships, in a total amount of HK$50,000, will be awarded to graduates of United College to pursue postgraduate studies at recognized universities in Hong Kong or abroad. Applicants are preferably under 26 years of age. The application period will be from 23 February to 16 March 2009.

The College Singing Contest 2009 entitled "Blinkin Park", organized by the College Student Union, was successfully held on 22 January 2009 at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall.  Performing guests were Miss G.E.M. and Mr William Chan, and the panel of judges consisted of three musicians, including singing instructor, Mr S C Tai.
