書院教職員聯誼會、書院生活委員會及校友會——元朗文化遊

 

由書院教職員聯誼會、書院生活委員會及校友會舉辦之「元朗文化遊」已於2009年4月18日舉行，並由歷史系朱鴻林教授講解圍村文化及中國歷史。參加者並於活動後品嚐特色圍村菜。合共三十一名教職員、校友及家屬出席是次活動。

 

United College Staff Association, College Life Committee and Alumni Association―Yuen Long Cultural Trip

 

A day trip was co-organised by the United College Staff Association, College Life Committee and Alumni Association on 18 April 2009. Programme included a guided walk along Ping Shan Heritage Trail led by Professor Chu Hung-lam of Department of History, and dinner at a restaurant famous for walled village cuisine. 31 members, alumni and their families joined this event.

書院成員獲比爾及梅琳達蓋茨基金會探索大挑戰頒發十萬美元研究資助

 

本院成員內科及藥物治療學系陳揚超教授獲比爾及梅琳達蓋茨基金會探索大挑戰計劃頒發十萬美元的研究資助，而陳教授領導的研究計劃「三聯慢病毒載體介導的基因改造抗流感病毒雞」是香港唯一獲資助的研究項目。

 

陳揚超教授提出建立一種針對流感病毒在家禽雞中侵入及複製的慢病毒載體，並利用該載體對雞進行基因改造，以減少禽流感的發病率，並最終減低人類感染禽流感的機會。評審認為陳教授的計劃非常創新，突破現時科學研究的框架，大有可能為全球健康帶來重大貢獻。

College Member was Awarded the Grand Challenges Explorations Grant for Innovative Global Health Research

 

College member, Professor Chen Yangchao of Department of Medicine and Therapeutics was awarded a US$100,000 Grand Challenges Explorations grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for an innovative global health research project, titled 'Generation of influenza-resistant chicken by triple combination lentiviral vector-mediated genetic modification'. This research is the only project in Hong Kong receiving support from the latest funding round of the scheme.

 

Professor Chen proposes developing a lentiviral vector that targets the entry and replication of influenza viruses in domestic chickens. His team plans to test the resistance of these genetically modified chickens to various influenza viruses in an effort to reduce the frequency of flu epidemics in poultry and, ultimately, in humans. His novel concept is considered by the panelist a breakthrough in current scientific paradigms and could possible have significant contribution to global health.
