More Outstanding JUPAS Students Chose United College

 

More outstanding JUPAS students chose United College as the top choice, including twelve students with 8As or above in HKCEE. Among them, two students with 10As and eight students with 8As were assigned to United College. Moreover, seven students with 4As or above in HKALE chose United College as top choice and all of them were assigned to the College. The College offers more admission scholarships to these outstanding students. They will be given priority in hostel application and the United College Globe-Oriented Active Learning (GOAL) Programme scholarships.

Orientation Camp

 

The 2009 United College Orientation Camp will be held on the College campus from 26 to 29 August 2009. The theme of the camp is ¡§United Stories¡¨. Through the four-day-three-night camp, the Organising Committee hopes that freshmen could feel the strengths and characteristics of United College, and facilitate the freshmen to explore their potentials and develop their sense of belonging towards the College. In the end, all participants can write up their own stories of the undergraduate years. Hostel News

 

Hostel residents for the academic year 2009-10 are advised to check-in at their respective hostels between 1:00pm to 6:00pm on Saturday, 5 September 2009. Residents should bring their student identity cards and two recent photos for registration. Residents who are unable to check-in at the scheduled time should apply in writing to the respective wardens for late check-in at least two working days in advance. Failure to do so may mean cancellation of the hostel places allocated. For further information, please refer to the College notice boards or contact the Dean of Students¡¦ Office.

Mr Fung Sun Kwan Whole Person Development Award Programme Opens for Application

 

This Programme is supported by Mr Fung Sun-kwan, and is designed to encourage students to take active and systematic steps to pursue whole person development through participation and involvement in academic as well as non-formal educational activities. The five core areas include ethical, intellectual, physical, social and aesthetic development. Scores will be assigned to various activities under these areas. United College Toastmasters Club

 

Since September 2005, United College Toastmasters Club (UCTMC) has strived to improve English speaking skills and standards among United College students. At Toastmasters meetings, members have the opportunity to learn by speaking in groups and working with others in a supportive environment. Members receive systematic trainings on impromptu speaking and public speaking through practice and feedback from their fellow club members. At present, 52 United College students have registered as members of the Club.

The Inauguration Ceremony cum Demonstration Meeting for recruiting new members will be held on Monday, 21 September 2009 at 6:45 pm at UCC2, T C Cheng Building, United College. Experienced Toastmasters will attend the demo meeting and coach members on proper public speaking skills.

Globe-Oriented Active Learning (GOAL) Programme

 

Spanish Culture and Language Programme at Barcelona, Spain

16 students of the College accompanied by Mr Nicolas Arriaga Agrelo, Instructor of the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages, attended a credit-bearing intensive Spanish course from 16 to 30 May 2009 at the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Spain. Apart from attending language courses, the programme also included some sight seeing and excursion activities to enable students to gain a better understanding of the Spanish culture.

 

Travel Study Programme to Washington, DC, Harrisburg and Philadelphia, PA

20 students attended the Travel Study Programme to Washington, DC, Area from 24 May to 7 June 2009. Through seminars and visits, students had the opportunity to learn about the Media, Government and American society. This programme is jointly organised by the College and the Hong Kong America Center.

 

French Culture and Language Programme at Lyon, France

23 students attended a credit bearing intensive French course (elementary) at the Université Catholique de Lyon, France from 30 May to 12 June 2009. Apart from attending language courses, the programme also included some sight seeing and excursion activities to enable students to gain a better understanding of the French culture.

 

China Internship Programme

The China Internship Programme jointly organised by United College, Shaw College and Zhejiang University was completed on 1 August 2009. The programme was divided into two parts. 39 students from both universities attended a 3-week internship programme in Hangzhou from 1 to 25 July 2009. The second part of this programme was conducted in Hong Kong.  Students from both universities were arranged to visit different organisations in Hong Kong such as the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management, Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, MTR Corporation Limited, China Light Power Company Limited, The Kowloon Motor Bus Co. Ltd., and Hang Seng Bank. The programme is supported by Shanghai Fraternity Association Hong Kong Limited.

 

Non-local Culture and English Language Programme―The University of Edinburgh

Two groups of 23 students departed on 4 July and 25 July 2009 respectively to attend the Summer Culture and English Language Programme at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. They attended English classes at the University of Edinburgh and stayed with local host families. The Programme is designed to provide students with opportunity to improve their English and also appreciate the culture of the host country.

 

Summer Programme at Utrecht University, The Netherlands

25 students of the College accompanied by Professor Wong Suk-ying, Department of Sociology, attended a summer course at Utrecht University in the Netherlands from 5 to 17 July 2009. The main theme of the course was "European Cultures and Identities".Students who completed the programme may apply for waiving the requirement of taking the College¡¦s "Senior Seminar". Project.

 

Non-local Chinese Culture and Language Prgramme―Shaanxi Normal University, Xian, PRC

14 United College students attended the Summer Chinese Culture and Language Programme at the Shaanxi Normal University from 19 July to 2 August 2009. The students had the opportunity to learn Putonghua and appreciate Chinese culture under close tutorship of Shaanxi Normal University postgraduate students.

 

Non-local Credit-bearing Summer Studies Scheme

The College provided scholarships to 21 students to attend credit- bearing summer courses offered by various renowned universities overseas such as the University of Cambridge, London School of Economics-University of London, UK; the University of California at Berkeley, the University of California at Los Angeles, Harvard University, USA and Utrecht University, the Netherlands.

Language Improvement Project ―Autumn 2009


The Autumn 2009 courses of the College's Language Improvement Project (LIP) are open for application from 7 to 16 September 2009. To cater for the needs of different students, the College will offer daytime Putonghua courses with priority being given to non-resident students.
