In the Honour List announced on 1 July 2010, College members were awarded honours by the HKSAR Government:

- The founding Chairman of Department of Electronics of United College, Professor Charles K Kao, was awarded     the Grand Bauhinia Medal
- College alumnus, Mr Tang How-kong (79/GBM), was awarded Hong Kong Police Medal for Distinguished Service
- College alumnus, Mr Cheung Hing-wah (74/SWK), was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star
- College alumnus, Mr Lo Sai-kwong (80/ECO), was awarded the Medal of Honour
- College alumni, Mr Wong Ping-fai (82/ELE), Mr Ko Yu-chow (82/PHY) and Mr Liu Ming-kwong (87/ACG) were  awareded the Chief Executive¡¦s Commendation for Government/Public Service

Appointments of Wardens of the College Hostels

The Cabinet has endorsed the appointments of Professor Lee Wing-yan of the School of Pharmacy as the Warden of Chan Chun Ha Hostel, Dr Chan Tak-yau of Physical Education Unit as the Warden of Bethlehem Hall and Mr Wong On-tung of Physical Education Unit as the Warden of Hang Seng Hall, with effect from 1 August 2010 to 31 July 2012.

Former Distinguished Visiting Scholar Appointed Provost of the City University of Hong Kong

The former College Distinguished Visiting Scholar and renowned scientist, Professor Arthur B Ellis has been appointed by the City University of Hong Kong as the Provost. Professor Ellis visited the College in February 2000 as the Distinguished Visiting Scholar of 1999-2000.

Community Services

1) College trustee, Mr Fong Man-hung was re-appointed as non-official member to the Advisory Committee on Revitalisation of Historic Buildings for two years with effect from 15 May 2010. Mr Fong has also been appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation for two years with effect from 1 July 2010.
2) College member, Professor Chan Ngai-hang, Department of Statistics, has been re-appointed by the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury as non-official member of Statistics Advisory Board for two years with effect from 1 June 2010.
3) College member, Professor Yu Tak-sun, School of Public Health and Primary Care, has been appointed as academic consultant of Fuzhou Municipal Centre of Disease Control and Prevention for two years with effect from 1 January 2010.

Appointment of Acting Dean of Students

Professor Stephen H S Wong, Dean of Students, attended the 57th Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Baltimore, USA from 1 to 5 June 2010. Professor Wong also led a group of College students to Beijing for the Social Service Programme co-organised with Tsinghua University, PRC from 12 to 15 July 2010.Lee Tan, Department of Electronic Engineering was the Acting Dean of Students during the above period.

UC Orientation Session for Students under Early Admission Scheme (EAS)

The College organised an orientation session for the new cohort of students admitted under the Early Admission Scheme on 24 April 2010. Orientation activities included introduction of the College system and unique features of United College by Professor Fung Kwok-pui, College Head and Professor Stephen H S Wong, Dean of Students, sharing by current students, College information display and campus tours. About 100 EAS students attended the session.

CUHK Won Gold at 2009 Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence

 

CUHK has outdone some four hundred organisations this year to win the Gold award under the category of Public Organisations and Utilities, further to the silver award last year. To build a green campus, the CUHK has installed solar hot water system, changed to LED lighting and improved the cooling system. The first set of solar hot water system in CUHK was installed at the Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities Building of United College early in 2004. Not only had it helped the University won a gold medal in the first Hong Kong Energy Efficiency Awards but also proved the effort of the College in environmental protection.

organised by the College Si Yuan Amenities Centre and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon.  The Centre also extended its opening hours during the World Cup Tournament ( 23 June ¡V 3 July) to enable the university staff and students to watch the matches live in the Centre.
