Celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival with the Vice-Chancellor

2) Professor Chan Ngai-hang, Professor of Statistics, has been re-appointed as a member of the Statistics Advisory Board for two years from 1 June 2010.

3) Professor Kenneth Young, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, has been appointed by the Director of Health as the chairman of the Radiological Protection Advisory Group for three years from 1 June 2010.

 聯合書院陳式太極拳班

為提倡健康生活及提高本院教職員重視健康的意識，書院健康促進小組與書院生活委員會及書院教職員聯誼會將合辦太極班，學員可學習陳式太極拳以強身健體，歡迎各位踴躍參加。太極班詳情如下：

日期：2010年10月5日至12月28日;逢星期二，共十二堂 (11月2日因場地問題會順延一星期上課)

導師：徐一杰先生 (國家一級武術教練及全國武術太極錦標賽冠軍)

United College Chen-style Taichi Course

To promote healthy living and raise the health awareness of United College staff members, the United College Task Force on Health Promotion, College Life committee and United College Staff Association are co-organising a Taichi Course. Participants can learn Chen-style Taichi techniques and improve their health. All UC staff members are welcome to join. Details of the course are as follows:

Date:   5 October - 28 December 2010 (every Tuesday, total 12 lessons; because of the venue problem, lesson on 

            2 November will be postponed for one week )

Time:   5:30pm to 7:30pm

Venue: Staff Common Room, 3/F, Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities Building

Instructor: Mr Xu Yijie (Martial arts instructor at the national level; Wushu and Tai Chi National Championships)

Quota: 8 persons (first-come first-served)

Fee: HK$1400* (should be submitted in the first class)

1) 日本研究學系Stephen R NAGY教授於2010年6月28日至30日，出席在英國吉爾福德舉行之CRONEM 第六屆周年會議2010暨 Runnymede Trust Living Together 國際會議：從跨學科角度檢視移民、少數族裔及國民在市政、政治及文化參與狀況，並發表論文一篇。

2) 生物系成公明教授於2010年7月11日至15日，出席在新加坡舉行之Inaugural International Conference on Molecular & Functional Catalysis會議，並發表論文一篇。

Report on College International Conference Grant Scheme

In the 1st round allocation of the International Conference Grant for 2010-2011, the College granted $42,840 to subsidise 18 staff members to attend international conferences as follows:

1) Professor Stephen R Nagy of Department of Japanese Studies was invited to attend and present a paper at the  CRONEM 6th Annual Conference 2010 Joint International Conference with Runnymede Trust Living Together: Civic, Political and Cultural Engagement Among Migrants, Minorities and National Population: Multidisciplinary Perspectives held in Guildford, UK from 28 to 30 June 2010.

2) Professor Tony K M Shing of Department of Chemistry was invited to attend and present a paper at the Inaugural International Conference on Molecular and Functional Catalysis held in Singapore from 11 to 15 July 2010.

3) Professor Cho Chi-hin of School of Biomedical Sciences was invited to attend and present a paper at the 16th World Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology held in Copenhagen, Denmark from 17 to 23 July 2010.

4) Professor Helen Wise of School of Biomedical Sciences was invited to attend and present a paper at the World Pharma 2010-16th World Congress of Basic Clinical Pharmacology held in Copenhagen, Denmark from 17 to 23 July 2010.

5) Professor Yao Zhihua of Department of Philosophy was invited to attend and present a paper at the Philosophie and Religion Eine Deutsch-Chinesische Konferenz held in Berlin, Germany from 19 to 22 July 2010.

6) Professor Jimmy C M Yu of Department of Chemistry was invited to attend and present a paper at the 18th International Conference on Photochemical Conversion and Storage of Solar Energy held in Seoul, Korea from 25 to 30 July 2010.

7) Professor Eliza C Y Tse of School of Hotel and Tourism Management was invited to attend and present a paper at the 2010 Annual /CHRIE Conference held in Puerto Rico, USA from 28 to 30 July 2010.

8) Ms Xie Chun-ling of New Asia-Yale-in-China Language Center was invited to attend and present a paper at the 8th International Conference of Generative Linguistics in the Old World / GLOW-in-Asia VIII /2010 held in Beijing, China from 12 to 14 August 2010.

9) Dr Law Huk-yuen of Department of Curriculum and Instruction was invited to attend and present a paper at the 5th East Asia Regional Conference on Mathematics Education held in Tokyo, Japan from 18 to 22 August 2010.

10) Professor Xie Zuowei of Department of Chemistry was invited to attend and present a paper at the 240th National meeting of the American Chemical Society held in Boston, USA from 22 to 26 August 2010.

11) Professor Lam Kin-che of Department of Geography and Resource Management was invited to attend and present a paper at the 20th International Congress of Acoustics (ICA) held in Sydney, Australia from 23 to 27 August 2010.

12) Professor Tian Linwei of School of Public Health and Primary Care was invited to attend and present a paper at the 2010 Joint Conference of International Society of Exposure Science and International Society for Environmental Epidemiology held in Seoul, Korea from 28 August to 1 September 2010.

13) Professor George G Chen of Department of Surgery was invited to attend and present a paper at the 14th International Thyroid Congress held in Paris, France from 11 to 16 September 2010.

14) Professor Shen Pei of Department of Chinese Language and Literature was invited to attend and present a paper at the 7th International Symposium on Ancient Chinese Grammar held in Roscoff (Bretagne), France from 16 to 20 September 2010.
