Professor Charles K Kao, United College Distinguished Laureate, was conferred an Honorary Fellowship by University of Strathclyde, Scotland, in recognition of his achievement in fostering the scientific development and his legendary contribution to fibre optic communication technology.

Ceremony for the Unveiling of the Statue of Professor Charles K Kao

In recognition of the outstanding achievement of Professor Charles K Kao in the field of optical fibre communication and leadership in steering the University to prominence, The Chinese University of Hong Kong held a ceremony for the unveiling of the statue of Professor Sir Charles Kao on 27 September 2010. Officiating at the ceremony were Professor and Mrs Charles K Kao, world-renowned sculptor Professor Wu Weishan and Professor Joseph C Y Sung, Vice-Chancellor, CUHK. Members of the College congratulated Professor Kao at the ceremony.

United College Ming De Scholarship and United College Xin Min Scholarship

The College has established the "United College Ming De Scholarship" and ¡§United College Xin Min Scholarship¡¨ to honour final-year UC students for having achieved academic excellence, manifested leadership ability as well as performed outstanding services to the College and the Community at large during his/her tenure at the University. Miss Chan Po Yan, Geography and Resource Management graduate, and Miss Ng Kai Ting, English Studies and English Language Education Double Degree Programme graduate, have been selected by the College as the recipients of the Ming De Scholarship and Xin Min Scholarship  respectively. The two honorable awards will be presented at the College's 54th Anniversary Ceremony to be held on 22 October 2010.

Orientation Day for Undergraduate Admissions

The Orientation Day for Undergraduate Admissions was held on 9 October 2010. The College student hostels, Wu Chung Multimedia Library, Tien Chi Microcomputer Laboratory, Shum Choi Sang United College Archives, Thomas H C Cheung Gymnasium and other sports facilities etc were open for visit. About seven hundred secondary school students and their parents visited the College campus on that day.

United College Supported the ¡§Hong Kong No Air-con Night¡¨

United College supported the ¡§Hong Kong No Air-con Night¡¨ organised by Green Sense and encouraged the residents and users of four College hostels, United College Residence, Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities Building and classrooms on United College campus to switch off the air conditioners from 29 September 2010 7:00pm to 30 September 2010, 7:00am so as to reduce greenhouse gases.

College Assembly-Moral Education Series (Lecture 7)

At the College Assembly held on 17 September 2010 at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, Professor Fung Kwok-pui, College Head and Professor Stephen H S Wong, Dean of Students welcomed 2010-2011 new staff members of United College and presented college souvenirs to them. The College also presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Professor Ha Sau-ching of Department of Sports Science and Physical Education who has been honored with 2009 Vice-Chancellor¡¦s Exemplary Teaching Award.

The College was also with great pleasure to have Dr Thomas T T Chen, College Trustee, attended the cheque presentation ceremony for his generous donation to support the establishment of ¡§Dr Thomas Chen Si Yuan Social Service Programme¡¨.

A Signing Ceremony of the Student Life Charter was also arranged at the assembly, with signatures by Student Union Representatives and Members of the Task Force on Students¡¦ Well-being. Guest Witnesses included Mr Shum Choi-sang (Chairman of Board of Trustees), Dr Thomas T T Chen (College Trustee), Ms Lina H Y Yan (College Trustee), Professor Fung Kwok-pui (College Head), Professor Stephen H S Wong (Dean of Students), Professor Jimmy C M Yu (Dean of General Education) and Professor Chang Song-hing (Associate Dean of General Education).

Following the Signing Ceremony was a talk delivered by Professor Stephen Wong on ¡§Student Life Charter¡¨. The College also arranged a sharing of ¡§Social Service Programme with Tsinghua University¡¨ by Mr Ben Niu of Tsinghua University and participating students of Tsinghua University and United College. The response from the students was very encouraging.

At the College Assembly held on 28 September 2010 at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, the guest speaker, Mr Lam Chiu-ying,  former Director of the Hong Kong Observatory and Chartered Meteorologist and Honorary Fellow of Royal Meteorological Society (UK), delivered a talk on  ¡§Dreaming About Stars¡¨. He shared with United College students about his road of growth and his understanding of life. The audience was enlightened by Mr Lam¡¦s speech. Special thanks go to the Scout Association of Hong Kong for co-organising this talk.

At the College Assembly held on 4 October 2010 at T Y Wong Hall, Ho Sin-Hang Engineering Building, the College paid tribute to Professor Charles Kao, United College Distinguished Laureate, and Mrs Kao. Mr Ricky W K Wong, alumnus and trustee of the College, talked on the topic ¡§Attempting the Impossibilities¡¨, and shared with United College students his road of success. The Moderator of the Lecture was Professor Chan Kam-tai of the Department of Electronic Engineering.

College Assembly-Creation of a Musical Drama

At the College Assembly held on 5 October 2010 at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, the College was honored to have invited Mr Leon Ko, Mr Chris Shum and Mr Victor Pang of the ACTOR¡¦s FAMILY, to be our guest speakers, to talk on the topic ¡§Creation of a Musical Drama¡¨. Impressive extracts from a musical drama and various songs were played during the Talk of the three speakers. A life demonstration of how lyrics being fitted into a melody was made with a piano. This Talk about musical drama was very attractive to students who were deeply moved by the art.
