聯合書院已於2月18日舉行五十五周年慶祝活動啟動禮，並由署理校長鄭振耀教授、校董會主席岑才生先生、校董會副主席兼基金會主席張煊昌博士及院長馮國培教授先展示院慶對聯，為五十五同年慶祝活動長開序幕。院慶對聯由書院資深導師黃坤堯教授撰寫，並由書院榮休成員曹忠岳先生書法，內容為「聯成一氣，堅道新民，五五韶華丁運會；合作同心，沙田明德，莘莘學子得英才。」。根據黃教授解釋，1956年10月，香港聯合書院由五間院校聯合組成，在堅道147號創校。當時得到政府的支持，共同發展大學教育。書院訂出了「明德新民」的校訓，希望每一個人都由衷喚起生命的自覺，日新又新，建設香港，發展事業。回望過去超過半紀的日子，聯合書院剛好遇上了這個偉大的時代，風雲際會，成就輝煌。今年是五十五周年的院慶，聯合書院矗立於沙田高山之巔，校園建設優雅壯麗，氣象萬千。我們仍然秉承前賢創校的理念，協力同心，弘揚芳馨的明德，特重人格教育，創新務實。現在很多學生都願意投入聯合書院的大家庭之中，得天下之英才而教育之，這就是我們最大的期望了。

United College 55th Anniversary Activities Kick-off Ceremony was held on 18 February 2011. An array of 55th anniversary activities rolled out with the unveiling of 55th anniversary couplets by Professor Jack Cheng, Acting Vice-Chancellor, Mr Shum Choi-shum, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Dr Thomas Cheung, Vice-Chairman, Board of Trustees and Chairman, Endowment Fund Committee and Professor Fung Kwok-pui, College Head. The 55th anniversary couplets were drafted by Professor Wong Kuan-io, Senior College tutor of the College, with calligraphy written by Mr Cho Chung-ngok, retired College member.
Immediately after the kick-off ceremony, a series of special activities, international conferences, academic programmes, cultural and art programmes, health series, student and alumni activities will be launched soon. Entering 2011, United College will celebrate its 55th Anniversary. The College has organised a series of celebration and activities.
With the implementation of the 3-3-4 academic reform, United College will be admitting a double cohort of students in 2012. A fundraising campaign will be launched with the College’s 55th Anniversary celebrations, so as to meet the various needs and challenges ahead arising from the increased student numbers in 2012-15. The College will establish a donations commemorative plaque on the College campus in recognition of the generous support of donors for donations of HK$10,000 or above received during the 55th anniversary celebration period from 1 January 2011 to 31 July 2012.

To celebrate its 55th Anniversary, United College celebrates with the University’s Office of The Arts Administrator in
organising a “Drama Talk Series” in March and April 2011. The invited speaker is Mr Hardy Tsoi, drama director, host of media cultural programmes and College Tutor as the speaker. The first talk was held on 4 March 2011. The topic was My Way- 45 Years in the Local Theatre presented by Mr Hardy S C Tsoi with Ms Lina Yan and Mr To Kwok-wai as special guests. 聯合書院已於3月5日舉行綠色校園啟動暨樹木導賞，活動先由院長馮國培教授及環境局副局長潘潔博士致辭，隨後各主禮嘉賓進行剪綵儀式，象徵校園兩項綠化工程——鄭棟材樓二樓平台綠化及胡忠多媒體圖書館對開草地改善工程完滿峻工。隨後由香港中文大學樹木計劃召集人暨綠色生活教育小組聯絡人左治強先生帶領三十多名校友、教職員及同學，遊覽聯合校園，並介紹於校園內具特色的樹木。隨後亦前往李兆基樓參觀「中大樹木之科學與藝術」展覽，了解校園內具特色的動植物，實在獲益良多。參加者亦為聯合校園內的樹木掛上樹牌，加強對校園內樹木的認識。
United College Opening Ceremony of Green Campus cum Campus Tree Walk was held on 5 March 2011.The ceremony was kick started by the speech of Professor Fung Kwok-pui, College Head and Dr Kitty Poon, Under Secretary for the Environment. It was followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony, signifying the completion of Green Projects in United College, 2/F root top, T C Cheng Building and the lawn outside Wu Chung Multimedia Library. Mr George C K Jor, Convener of the CU Tree Project and Green Education Working Group led the campus tree walk for more than 30 students, staff and alumni. Science and Art of Trees of CUHK Exhibition was visited in Lee Shau Kee Building and participants knew more special species of plants and insects in our campus. In addition, there was a tree-tagging exercise which enhance the knowledge of trees inside campus.

為慶祝聯合書院成立五十五周年，並向桂冠學人高錕教授伉儷致敬，書院將於2011年3月23日（星期三）舉辦「高錕教授：光纖之父」展覽導賞團，並由電子工程學系陳錦泰教授及湛偉權教授擔任導賞員，讓參觀者對光纖和相關概念有更深入的認識。
展覽由香港科技園公司主辦，展覽廳共分為四個區域，第一個區域集中介紹高錕教授的個人簡歷和成就，而其他區域則提供光纖的基本概念、光纖在日常生活中的各種應用及未來發展，參觀者還可以透過互動遊戲認識光纖傳輸光線背後的原理。

To celebrate its 55th Anniversary and pay tribute to Professor and Mrs Kao, United College Distinguished Laureate, the college will organise a Guided Tour to Professor Charles K Kao: The Father of Fibre Optics Showcase on 23 March 2011. Professor Chan Kam-tai and Professor Cham Wai-kuen from Department of Electronic Engineering would guide the tour.
The exhibition is presented by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. The showcase is divided into four zones. The first zone is dedicated to Professor Kao’s life and accomplishments, while the remaining zones highlight the basic concept of ibre optics, its various applications in daily life and future developments. Visitors can also familiarize themselves with the mechanics behind optical fibres by transmitting light in an interactive game.

Hong Kong will join 656 cities in 80 countries worldwide in this year's Earth Hour "lights out" campaign at 8:30 pm, Saturday, 26 March 2011 to resolve the issue of global warming by action. WWF introduced five simple actions to encourage Hong Kong people to adopt a low-carbon lifestyle: (1) Say No to appliances' standby; (2) Reduce shower time; (3) Use less disposable dining utensils; (4) Eat less meat; and (5) Turning off lights at 08:30pm, 26 March 2011. United College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong will also support the Earth Hour day and only minimal campus lightings will be provided in that hour. College members are encouraged to support this initiative. Details of the Earth Hour day will be available at wwf.org.hk/earthhour.

Professor Charles Kao, United College Distinguished Laureate, will be conferred an Honorary Fellowship by The University of Hong Kong on 22 March 2011, in recognition of his achievement in fostering the scientific development and his legendary contribution to fibre optic communication technology.

Professor Fung Kwok-pui, College Head, was on duty trip to Kunming, PRC on 6 and 7 March 2011 and Professor Stephen H S Wong, Dean of Students, was the Acting Head during that period.
本院藝術顧問利漢楨教授將與書院導師暨中大藝術系兼任講師張惠儀博士主持《藝術中與西》講座。二十世紀二、三十年代開始，粵省乃至大江南北的水墨畫家南遷香港，部分繼而組織畫會。 透過探索畫家如何在這個中西交匯的殖民地尋找自我，創作具本土特色的水墨作品的過程，並廣及早期畫會之情況，沉畫壇逸事。又藉著賞析黃般若、丁衍庸、趙少昂、 楊善深、呂壽琨、劉國松等之畫作，回顧由傳統到現代的進程。講座詳情如下：

Professor Lee Hon-ching, Art Advisor of United College and Dr Cheung Wai-yee, College Tutor and Part-time Lecturer of the Department of Fine Arts, CUHK, will offer seminars on Art East and West. Chinese ink painters in Guangdong Province and along Yangzi River migrated to Hong Kong in 1920s-30s and ink painting association was formed. Sketching the anecdote in ink painting community by exploring the self actualisation of ink painters in the colonial environment, creating paintings with localised characteristic and early stage of the set up of painting association will be discussed. Moreover, the progress of the community will be reviewed by analysing the ink paintings of Wong Po-yeh, Ding Yan-yong, Chao Shao-an, Yang Shan-shen, Lu Shou-kun, Liu, Kuo-sung. Street Music Series in CUHK endeavors to explore the inter-relationship synergy between outdoor music performance and the varying characteristics of outdoor environments and public space. The concert will feature a diverse range of local and mainland indie musicians who will share with the audience their unique brands of highly creative, experimental and socially conscious alternative music. The encounter between musicians and audiences in the relaxed setting of an outdoor space will bring a new kind of directress and interactive quality to the concert experience. Post-performance discussions with the artists and others speakers will allow both audience and musicians to further explore the potentials of performance in diverse outdoor spaces as a means of engaging more deeply with the environment and confronting both social issues and questions of public space.

聯合書院基礎高爾夫球講座及高爾夫球體驗日已分別於2011年2月17日及19日在聯合書院及白石高爾夫球練習場順利舉行。參加者包括同學、導師及校友。在前中大拓展及籌募處處長鄭文珊先生及一眾聯合校友的指導下，學生得以體驗高球樂趣，獲益良多。
United College Basic Golf Lecture and Golf Experiential Day were respectively held on 17and 19 February 2011 at United College and Whitehead Driving Range. Participants included students, tutors and alumni. Participants have experienced the fun of golfing under the guidance of Mr Ricky Cheng, former director of Institutional Advancement of CUHK, and other United College alumni.
本院成員數學系魏軍城教授榮獲2010年晨興數學銀獎，以表彰他對半線性橢圓方程研究取得了一系列重要成果。晨興數學獎旨在表彰四十五歲以下在基礎數學及應用數學有傑出成就的華人數學家，由多位國際知名數學家組成的評選委員會選出得獎者，於三年一度的世界華人數學家大會上頒發。
此外，本院陳國威校友(2002/數學) 奪得新世界數學獎博士論文銀獎，陳校友現為京都大學博士後研究員。
書院謹向魏軍城教授及陳國威校友致以衷心祝賀!
College member, Professor Wei Jun-cheng, Department of Mathematics, was awarded the 2010 Morningside Silver Medal of Mathematics for his achievements in semi-linear elliptic equations. The Morningside Medal of Mathematics is awarded to exceptional Chinese mathematicians under the age of 45 for their seminal achievements in pure and applied mathematics at the triennial International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM), a premier event that brings together Chinese and overseas mathematicians to discuss the latest research developments in pure and applied mathematics.
Furthermore, College Alumnus, Mr Chan Kwok-wai (2002/ MATH), received the New World Mathematics Awards Doctor Thesis Awards-Silver Prize. Mr Chan is now a Post-doctoral Fellow at Kyoto University.
