More outstanding students are admitted to United College in 2011-2012, including: New Students Admitted through JUPAS: One 6As Three 5As Six 4As New Students Admitted under the Early Admissions Scheme: Three 10As Seven 9As Seven 8As All of the above students chose United College as the first preference. Apart from offering more admission scholarships to outstanding students, the College will offer hostel place, full-hostel fee scholarship for one year and one Globe-Oriented Active Learning (GOAL) Programme scholarship for some outstanding students as an incentive. |

聯合書院與日本範氏基金合辦青年高峯會 |

聯合書院、晨興書院與日本範氏基金將於本年8月合辦青年高峯會以慶祝書院五十五周年及日本範氏基金成立五周年。來自亞洲不同地區包括中國、香港、印度、日本、韓國、菲律賓、泰國及越南共二十八名同學將於8月20至27日期間齊集香港中文大學，學生將分成四組並以「人類的生存空間」為專題作學術研究。 高峯會開幕典禮將於8月21日於香港中文大學舉行，諾貝爾經濟學得獎人兼香港中文大學博文講座教授莫理斯爵士與日本人權教育啓發推進中心會長橫田洋三博士將擔任開幕禮的主題講座嘉賓，詳情如下： 日期 / 時間 : 2011年8月21日下午三時 地點 : 香港中文大學行政樓祖堯堂 程序 : 下午3時至3時15分 開幕典禮 下午3時15分至4時 主題講座一 講題：清除貧困 主講嘉賓：莫理斯教授 下午4時至5時 主題講座二 講題：人權是普世價值嗎? 主講嘉賓：橫田洋三教授 主席 : 日本範氏基金會青年高峯會籌委會主席兼日本關西學院水戶考道教授大學法學研究所講座教授 由學生主持的高峯會議將於8月26日下午3時正於香港中文大學行政樓祖堯堂舉行。開幕禮及高峯會議將以英語進行。座位有限，請致電3943 1696、3943 7571或3943 7562與書院學生輔導處陳景玲女士、黎巧琼女士或區慧敏女士預留座位。 |

| Kamenori Earth Youth Summit | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
To celebrate the 55th Anniversary of United College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the 5th Anniversary of the Kamenori Foundation of Japan, United College, Morningside College and the Kamenori Foundation will jointly organise a Kamenori Earth Youth Summit (KEYS) from 20-27 August 2011 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Twenty-eight students from eight Asian countries or regions which include China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam will form themselves into four groups to conduct academic research on the main theme of “Survival of Humankind”. The Opening Ceremony of the Summit will be on 21 August 2011. Professor Sir James A. Mirrlees, Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences and Distinguished-Professor-at-Large of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Dr Yozo Yokota, President of the Human Rights Affairs in Japan will be the keynote speakers. | Initiation Ceremony for Freshmen | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
The 2011-2012 Initiation Ceremony for Freshmen will be held on Friday, 9 September 2011 at 1:30 pm at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. All College members are invited to join the College in welcoming this year’s freshmen. A group photo will be taken during the Ceremony and staff members are also invited to join the Luncheon before the Ceremony at 12:00 noon at the College Staff Common Room. Shuttle buses will be arranged to take staff members from College campus to the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall for the Ceremony. | 常宗豪教授紀念書畫展 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
由香港中文大學中國語言及文學系及聯合書院合辦的「常宗豪教授紀念書畫展」，由2011年8月27日至2011年9月26日於香港中文大學聯合書院胡忠多媒體圖書館二樓舉行。 常宗豪教授為中大聯合書院校友，1967年畢業後以優異成績留校任教。1978年出任中文系系主任，1997年榮休。先生學殖深醇，儒林望重；春風化雨，桃李芳菲。雅愛書畫藝術，本校書法班由其一手創立，迄今逾四十年。為紀念先生對書院各方面的貢獻並展示其藝術成就，特舉辦是次展覽。 開放時間如下： 星期一至五 上午8:20至下午10:00 星期六 上午8:20 至下午7:00 星期日 下午1:00 至下午7:00 如有查詢，請致電3943 1844或3943 7455與聯合書院輔導處高榮銘先生或楊頌妍女士聯絡。 |

| Professor Sheung Chung Ho Memorial Exhibition of Calligraphy and Painting | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Professor Sheung Chung Ho Memorial Exhibition of Calligraphy and Painting, co-organised by United College and Department of Chinese Language and Literature, will be held from 27 August 2011 to 26 September 2011 at 2/F, Wu Chung Multimedia Library, United College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Professor Sheung studied in United College and graduated in 1967, majoring in Chinese Language. He kicked off his teaching career in the University immediately after graduation with very outstanding academic achievements. In 1978, Professor Sheung became the Chairman of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, and retired in 1997. He was a renowned and knowledgeable scholar and who gained great respect from his students. He was fond of calligraphy and the calligraphy group he organised ran over 40 years. An exhibition will be organised in memory of Professor Sheung and his contribution to the College with achievement in calligraphy and painting. The exhibition, with opening hours as below. The Ceremony marking the 55th Anniversary of United College will be held on Friday, 21 October 2011 at 11:30 am at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. Mr Shum Choi-sang, SBS, JP, Chairman of the College Board of Trustees and Mr Clement C M Leung, JP, Director, Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, will officiate at the Ceremony. The annual publication of United College, United Bulletin, not only serves as an official chronicle of College personalia, student activities and major events, but also features literary works written by College staff members and students. | United College 55th Anniversary Fund Raising | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

The College has organised a series of activities to celebrate the 55th anniversary of United College.With the implementation of the 3-3-4 academic reform, United College will admit a double cohort of students in 2012. A fundraising campaign is launched with the College’s 55th Anniversary celebrations, so as to meet the various needs and challenges ahead arising from the increased student numbers in 2012-2015. The College will establish a donations commemorative plaque on the College campus in recognition of the generous support of donors for donations of HK$10,000 or above received during the 55th anniversary celebration period from 1 January 2011 to 31 July 2012. United College supports the “Hong Kong No Air-con Night” organised by Green Sense and encourages the residents and users of four College hostels, United College Staff Residence, Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities Building and classrooms on United College campus to switch off the air conditioners from 7:00 pm on 29 September 2011 to 7:00 am on 30 September 2011 so as to reduce greenhouse gases. |

本院榮休成員關靈安教授於2011年6月27日辭世，享年八十八歲。治喪儀式已於2011年7月21日舉行。 關教授早年曾於聯合書院堅道舊校兼職任教，1964年重回英文系任職講師。他多年擔任英文系系主任及文學院院長，對書院員生關懷備至，愛護有嘉。關教授於1984年榮休。本院同仁永遠銘感關先生對高等教育的貢獻，並謹向他的家人致以最深切慰問。 |

| Obituary | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Professor John Gannon, retired staff of United College, passed away at the age of eighty-eight on 27 June 2011. The funeral was held on 21 July 2011. Professor Gannon had part-time teaching in United College in 1950s when the College campus was located at Caine Road. He was appointed as lecturer of the English Department of United College in 1964 and had served as Head of the department and Dean, Faculty of Arts for many years. He made significant contributions to the Faculty and the College. He was retired in 1984. Members of United College are saddened by the news and express the deepest condolences to their families. |
