聯合書院五十五周年院慶典禮 |
書院五十五周年院慶典禮訂於10月21日(星期五)上午11時30分假大學邵逸夫堂舉行。書院校董會主席岑才生太平紳士及香港特別行政區政府食物環境衛生署署長梁卓文太平紳士(87/政政)將擔任主禮嘉賓。
典禮後，書院隨即於聯合校園舉行院慶生日會，書院教職員聯誼會並送出大蛋糕致賀。生日會後，書院即於1時15分假張祝珊師生康樂大樓頂樓文怡閣舉行院慶午餐。為慶祝書院院慶，書院學生會亦籌備了一連串的慶祝活動，節目內容將於稍後公佈。

55th Anniversary
Ceremony |
The Ceremony marking the 55th Anniversary of
United College will be held on Friday, 21
October 2011 at 11:30 am at the Sir Run Run Shaw
Hall of the University. Mr Shum Choi-sang, SBS,
JP, Chairman of the College Board of Trustees
and Mr Clement C M Leung (87/GPA), JP, Director
of Food and Environmental Hygiene, The
Government of the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region, will officiate at the
ceremony.
Immediately after the ceremony, there will be a
birthday party on the College campus. The
College Staff Association will present a
birthday cake for the occasion. The day’s
highlight will be the Anniversary Luncheon at
the College Staff Common Room at 1:15 pm. The
College Student Union will also organise a
series of activities to celebrate the occasion,
details to be announced soon.

Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities Building. Fellows of
the College, Senior College Tutors and College
Tutors discussed the aspects of general
education, student services, alumni affairs and
college administration, and made valuable
recommendations on the issues concerned.

奬學金得獎人講座系列——羅德學人講座
|
羅德獎學金是一項歷史悠久，國際知名的獎學金。不少羅德學人在國際舞台上有著舉足輕重的地位，得獎者包括前美國總統克林頓(Bill
Clinton)、前澳洲總理霍克(Bob
Hawke)及2001年諾貝爾經濟學獎得主斯彭思教授(Professor A. Michael
Spence)等。中文大學過去亦曾有十三位畢業生獲此殊榮前往牛津大學深造，其中七位更是聯合書院的畢業生。他們於投身社會後在法律、銀行、金融及公共行政等各行各業擔任要職。

Series by Scholarship Recipients ― Rhodes
Scholar Lecture
|
The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest and one of
the most prestigious international fellowships.
Many scholars have become world leaders in
different industries, such as Bill Clinton,
former President of the United States; Bob
Hawke, former Prime Minister of Australia, and
Professor A. Michael Spence, Nobel Laureate in
Economics in 2001. Thirteen CUHK graduates,
seven of whom being United College alumni, have
become Rhodes Scholars. They have subsequently
excelled in a variety of industries ranging from
law, banking and finance, to public service.
The Rhodes Scholarship 2012 is now open for
application. The awardees will be fully
subsidised for pursuing further studies at
Oxford University, United Kingdom. Students who
have passed their nineteenth but not their
twenty-fifth birthday by 1 October 2012 and have
obtained an honours degree before the said date
are eligible to apply. Application deadline is

To enhance students' understanding on the Rhodes
Scholarship, United College organised a Rhodes
Scholar Lecture for all United College students
on Saturday, 10 September 2011 at 10:30 am in
C2, T C Cheng Building. The UC Rhodes Scholar,
Mr William M F Wong, Barrister-at-Law and
Professor Jeremiah K H Wong, Senior College
Tutor, shared their experiences with the
students.

為支持由環保觸覺主辦的「香港無冷氣夜」活動，聯合書院鼓勵四所宿舍、聯合苑、張祝珊師生康樂大樓及聯合書院範圍內的課室於2011年9月29日晚上7時至2011年9月30日早上7時關掉空調，以減少溫室氣體排放。

off the air conditioners from 7:00 pm on 29
September 2011 to 7:00 am on 30 September 2011
so as to reduce greenhouse gases.

East and West Seminar Series entitled “Museums
Around the World (II)”.
Content includes introducing distinctive museums
in the country (The National Museum of Chinese
Writing, The Museum of Liaoning Province,
Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Suzhou Museum) and
various museums overseas [Princeton University
Art Museum, Vigeland Sculpture Park (Oslo),

聯合書院、晨興書院及日本範氏基金合辦青年高峰會 |
為慶祝書院五十五周年及日本範氏基金成立五周年，聯合書院、晨興書院與日本範氏基金於2011年8月20至27日合辦青年高峰會。來自亞洲不同地區包括中國、香港、印度、日本、韓國、菲律賓、泰國及越南共二十八名同學齊集香港中文大學，以「人類的生存空間」為專題作學術研究。
高峰會開幕典禮於8月21日假香港中文大學祖堯堂舉行，由諾貝爾經濟學得獎人、香港中文大學博文講座教授兼晨興書院院長莫理斯爵士與日本人權教育啟發推進中心會長橫田洋三博士擔任開幕禮的主題講座嘉賓，講題分別為「清除貧困」及「人權是普世價值嗎﹖」。
由學生主持的高峰會議亦已於8月26日假祖堯堂舉行，參加同學就四個不同範疇將研究所得作公開發表，並得日本駐港總領事隈丸優次先生出席以示支持。

Kamenori Earth
Youth Summit Organised by United College,
Morningside College and the Kamenori Foundation |
To celebrate the 55th Anniversary of United
College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong
and the 5th Anniversary of the Kamenori
Foundation of Japan, United College, Morningside
College and the Kamenori Foundation jointly
organised Kamenori Earth Youth Summit (KEYS)
from 20 to 27 August 2011 at The Chinese
University of Hong Kong. Twenty eight students
from eight Asian countries or regions which
include China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea,
Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam formed
themselves into four groups to conduct academic
research on the main theme of “Survival of
Humankind”.
The Opening Ceremony of the Summit was held on
21 August 2011 at the Cho Yiu Conference Hall.
Professor Sir James A Mirrlees, Nobel Laureate
in Economic Sciences, Distinguished
Professor-at-Large of CUHK and Master of
Morningside College and Dr Yozo Yokota,
President of the Human Rights Affairs in Japan
were the keynote speakers at the Opening
Ceremony of the Summit. They delivered talks on
“Eliminating Poverty” and “Are Human Rights
Universal?” respectively.
The highlight of the Summit was the Students’
Conference on 26 August 2011. Students presented
their research findings on four different
sub-themes. Mr Yuji Kumamaru, Consul-General of
Japan in Hong Kong, also attended the Students’
Conference to show his support to the programme.

「常宗豪教授紀念書畫展」徇眾要求延長展期 |
由香港中文大學聯合書院及中國語言及文學系合辦的「常宗豪教授紀念書畫展」己於2011年8月27日正式開幕，聯合書院院長馮國培教授、常宗豪夫人及中國語言及文學系系主任何志華教授應邀在開幕禮上致辭。因反應熱烈，展期現延長至10月26日，歡迎到臨聯合書院胡忠多媒體圖書館二樓參觀。
常宗豪教授號恕齋，1937年生於山東煙台牟平縣。47年移居香港，六十年代初入讀香港中文大學，為中大聯合書院校友，以優異成績畢業並留校任教。1978年出任香港中文大學中國語言及文學系系主任，以迄1987年，弘揚國學，孜孜不倦。常教授博通群經，諸子百家，無不涉獵，能書善畫，1996年獲香港國際創價學會頒贈香港SGI獎，以表彰先生多年來對藝術及文化之貢獻。先生1997年於香港中文大學退休，續任珠海書院文史研究所及新亞研究所教授、香港藝術館及澳門博物館顧問。先生學殖深醇，儒林望重；春風化雨，桃李芳菲。先生晚年移居澳門，2005年，澳門藝術博物館主辦「綆短汲深─常宗豪書畫展」並出版《綆短汲深─常宗豪書畫》。先生著有《靈巫與九歌》、《唐五代詞講義》、《九歌新論》等。先生於2010年6月26日於澳門病逝，享壽七十三歲。為紀念先生對聯合書院及中國語言及文學系之貢獻並展示其藝術成就，特舉辦是次展覽。

“Professor
Sheung Chung Ho Memorial Exhibition of
Calligraphy and Painting” ― exhibition period
extended |
The exhibition period of “Professor Sheung Chung
Ho Memorial Exhibition of Calligraphy and
Painting” is extended to 26 October 2011 in
response to public need. The exhibition, co-organised
by the United College and Department of Chinese
Language and Literature of The Chinese
University of Hong Kong, is held at 2/F, Wu
Chung Multimedia Library, United College.
Professor Fung Kwok-pui, Head of United College,
Mrs Sheung Chung Ho and Professor Ho Che-wah,
Chairman of Department of Chinese
Language and Literature addressed in the opening
ceremony on 27 August 2011.
Professor Sheung, alias Shu Zhai, was born in
1937 at Muping, Yantai of Shandong Province. He
then migrated to Hong Kong in 1947 and studied
in United College in 1960s, majoring in Chinese
Language. He kicked off his teaching career in
the Universityimmediately after graduation with
very outstanding academic achievements. In 1978,
Professor Sheung became the Chairman of the
Department of Chinese Language and Literature,
and
retired in 1997.
After his retirement in CUHK, Professor Sheung
became the Professor of Institute of Chinese
Literature and Chinese History of Chu Hai
College and New Asia Institute of Advanced
Chinese Studies, and also consultant to Hong
Kong Museum of Art and Macao Museum. He was a
renowned and knowledgeable scholar, with a
variety of works, and gained great respect from
his students. In 2005, an exhibition “Paintings
and Calligraphies of Sheung Chung Ho” was held
by the Macao Museum of Art and an album of
paintings with the same title was published.
Professor Sheung passed away on 26 June 2010 in
Macau, aged 73. An exhibition is organised in
memory of Professor Sheung and his contribution
to the United College with achievement in
calligraphy and painting.

Sunday 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Closed on 1 October 2011 (Saturday) and 5
October 2011 (Wednesday).

聯合書院為慶祝五十五周年院慶，將舉辦一連串的慶祝活動。為應付2012因教育改革而推行的「三三四學制」，而同時收錄中六及中七入學的兩批學生，
聯合書院於2012年及其後數年須相應增加資源，以配合各項獎助學金及學生活動。書院將藉著五十五周年院慶推行籌款活動，並由2011年1月1日至2012年7月30日期間，凡捐贈港幣一萬元或以上者，將鐫名於日後建於聯合書院校園的銘謝牌匾上。

55th Anniversary Fundraising

The College has organised a series of activities
to celebrate the 55th anniversary of United College.With the
implementation of the 3-3-4 academic reform,
United College will admit a double cohort of
students in 2012. A fundraising campaign is
launched with the College’s 55th
Anniversary celebrations, so as to meet the
various needs and challenges ahead arising from
the increased student numbers in 2012-2015. The
College will establish a donations commemorative
plaque on the College campus in recognition of
the generous support of donors for donations of
HK$10,000 or above received during the 55th
anniversary celebration period from 1 January
2011 to 31 July 2012.

到訪傑出學人張醒鐘教授
|
2011至2012年度的「到訪傑出學人」為美國邁阿密大學張醒鐘教授，他將於10月15日至24日到訪香港。
張醒鐘教授是國際著名的生命科學研究專家學者。他分別於2001年及2003年獲委任為奈特生物醫學工程學講座教授和資深退伍軍人研究科學家。張教授在邁阿密大學擁有三個講座教授銜，包括醫學講座教授(1996)、骨科及康復醫學講座教授(1997)和醫學工程學講座教授(2003)。
張教授在洛約拉馬利蒙特大學畢業後，努力不懈，四十多年來致力從事醫學工程的研究。最為人樂道的研究包括幹細胞及再生醫學，他的研究亦延伸至血管生物學的心血管疾病、細胞治療、骨科、糖尿病及風濕病等範疇。張教授爭取研究經費的力能極強，在他領導下的研究計劃總額超過三千萬美元，並持有多項有盈利貢獻的專利權。
張教授於2010年為電子書《幹細胞及再生醫學》擔任編輯一職，亦為當代風濕病回顧特刊《幹細胞、軟骨復修和骨關節炎》作客席編輯。他身兼國家衛生研究院、退伍軍人功勳評審委員會、多個基金及關節炎基金會細胞生物學研究小組成員。最近，他更出任美國科學促進協會及荷蘭科學研究組的研究競爭力計劃評審。
將學術研究成果商業化是現今科學家的重大挑戰，張教授是國家科學基金的生物表面中心總監及邁阿密大學細胞治療及組織工程計劃的聯合總監。他擁有超過25年擔任生物工程企業顧問和科學委員會成員的經驗，並持有不少授權經銷協議。對張醒鐘教授來說，工作中最要好的「不是從事頂尖研究」，而是「見證著年輕一輩的成功」。張教授桃李滿天下，受他教益而不同專業的學生都成為了團隊領袖、獎項得主和大學教授。他的個性啟發學生成為充滿朝氣、正直不苛和有品味的研究學者。
張醒鐘教授是次訪問期間，將主持兩個公開講座及出席學術活動，講題及詳情如下：

2011 as the College’s Distinguished Visiting
Scholar in 2011- 2012.
Professor Cheung is an internationally renowned
researcher and scholar in life sciences. He was
bestowed the James L Knight Professorship in
2001 and appointed Senior Veteran
Affairs Research Career Scientist in 2003. In
addition, he
holds 3 professorships at the University of
Miami ― Professor of Medicine since 1996,
Professor of Orthopaedics and
Rehabilitation since 1997, and Professor of
Biomedical
Engineering since 2003.
In his long academic career over four decades
since he
received B.S. of Biological Sciences from Loyola
Marymount University, he is the leading expert
in biomedical engineering, renowned in his
research in stem cells and regenerative
medicine, extended to applications to vascular
biology of cardiovascular diseases, and cell-based therapy,
orthopaedic complications, diabetes and
autoimmunity. Professor Cheung’s ability to
attract grants is extraordinary, he was P-I or
Co-I of research programs with well over US$30
million and holds a number of profitable
patents.
Professor Cheung serves as editor of the e-Book
“Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine” 2010 and
guest editor for the
Current Rheumatology Review Special Issue “Stem
Cells,
Cartilage Repair and Osteoarthritis”. He was a
member of NIH study sections, VA Merit Review
Boards, various foundations, the Cell Biology
Study Section of the Arthritis Foundation. More
recently, he serves as reviewer for the Research
Competitiveness Programme (RCP) at the American
Association for the Advancement of Science and
Technology Foundation STW, Dutch Organisation
for Scientific Research, The Netherlands.
To be successful in commercialisation of one’s
research
outcome is the challenge of modern day
scientists. Professor Cheung is the site
Director of National Science Foundation
Industry/University Center for Biosurfaces and
co-Director of the Cellular Therapy and Tissue
Engineering Initiative at
University of Miami. For more than twenty five
years, Professor Cheung has been consultant and
science board member of several biotechnological
companies and holder of a number of licensing
agreements. To Professor Cheung, the best part
of his job is “not cutting-edge research”, but
“seeing young people succeed”. His mentorship
covers scores of students
specialised in different professional fields as
team leaders, award winners and professors. He
personally affects his
students to be lively, upright and stylish
researcher. During his visit to United College,
Professor Cheung will deliver two public

In 2011-12, a couple of new admission
scholarships are offered to new students who
have demonstrated outstanding performance in
public examinations, sports and community
services. These new scholarships include “WEDO
Admission Scholarships”, “Digital Heritage Elite
Athlete Scholarships”, “Mrs Alice Lau Mak Yee-ming
Sports Admission Scholarships”, “Yau Ying Sum
Hostel Residence Admission Scholarships”, “Shum Choi Sang First-in-the-Family Tertiary Education
Admission Scholarships”, etc. In addition, to
encourage students who are the first generation
in the family to pursue tertiary education at
United College, the College has established
"First-in-the-Family Tertiary Education
Admission Scholarships”. “Dr Thomas Chen Si Yuan
Social Service Admission Scholarships” and
“Innovation and Culture Admission Scholarships”
are also established to encourage year-one
students with whole-person development, as well
as talents and capacity for creativity in the
arts and
culture.

恒生樓二十五周年樓慶 |
恒生樓宿生會將連同恒生樓舊生會，由2011年9
月份起一連三個月舉辦一連串的活動，以慶祝宿舍二十五周年樓慶。恒生樓宿生會及舊生會現誠邀歷屆聯合校友及恒生樓宿生回母校共聚，互聚情誼，了解書院及恒生樓最新發展情況，共同慶祝宿舍銀禧紀念。
恒生樓二十五周年樓慶節目眾多，歡迎全體校友及各屆恒生樓宿生一同參加。樓慶其中一個節目是9月舉辦的「徵文比賽」及「攝影比賽」，讓歷屆宿生抒發對恒生樓的情感，題目可環繞恒生樓自由發揮，經過評審挑選之優秀作品將刊登於《恒生樓二十五周年樓慶紀念特刊》；而攝影比賽的作品除刊登在《樓慶紀念特刊》外，更有機會在10月於聯合書院湯石公開展覽。
而恒生樓二十五周年樓慶晚宴，將於11月中旬在湯石舉行，節目包括表演、遊戲、分享、抽獎及恒生短片播放等，歷屆宿生可以藉此機會聚首一堂。恒生樓宿生會亦會舉辦「恒生體育會球聚」，誠邀校友及宿生一同組隊參加球賽，聯誼之餘亦可在比賽場互較高下。

25th Anniversary
of Hang Seng Hall

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hang Seng
Hall, a series of activities will be co-organised
by Hang Seng Hall
Residents’ Association and Hang Seng Hall Alumni
Association from September to November 2011. All
alumni and current residents are welcome to join
these activities to celebrate and witness the
silver jubilee of Hang Seng Hall.
An essay writing competition and photo-taking
contest which aim to allow residents to express
their passion on Hang Seng Hall. Selected
outstanding essays and photos will be
published in the publication "Hang Seng Building
25th
Anniversary Celebration" and exhibited at the
College
campus lawn in October.
A dinner celebration which includes
performances, games, sharing, video playback,
lucky draw, etc will be held in
mid-November. Hang Seng Hall Residents’
Association will also organise ball games
gathering for alumni and current residents.

College trustee, Mrs Ng Chu Lien-fan’s mother,
passed away at the age of ninety-seven on 24
August 2011. The funeral was held on 6 September
2011 at the Hong Kong Funeral Home, North Point.
Members of United College are saddened by the
news and would like to express the deepest
condolences to Mrs Ng and her family.
