聯合書院五十五周年院慶活動

書院五十五周年院慶典禮訂於2011年10月21日（星期五）上午11時30分假大學邵逸夫堂舉行。書院校董會主席岑才生先生及香港特別行政區政府食物環境衞生署署長梁卓文先生(87/政政)將擔任主禮嘉賓，並致勉辭。

典禮後，書院隨即於聯合校園舉行院慶生日會，書院教職員聯誼會將送出大蛋糕致賀。生日會後，書院將於張祝珊師生康樂大樓頂樓文怡閣舉行院慶午餐。

為慶祝院慶，書院學生會亦籌備了連串活動一同慶賀：

United College 55th Anniversary Activities

The 55th Anniversary Ceremony of the College will be held on Friday, 21 October 2011 at 11:30 am at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall of the University. Mr Shum Choi-sang, Chairman of the College Board of Trustees and Mr Clement C M Leung (87/GPA), Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, will officiate at the ceremony.

Immediately after the Ceremony, there will be a birthday party on the College campus. The College Staff Association will donate a birthday cake for the occasion. The Anniversary Luncheon will be held at the College Staff Common Room right after the birthday party.

The College Student Union will also host a series of activities to celebrate the occasion as highlighted below:

2011至2012年度新生開學典禮

本年度書院新生開學典禮已於9月9日(星期五)假邵逸夫堂舉行，當天共有60多位教職員出席。典禮舉行前，書院於文怡閣設午宴招待出席的員生。典禮上，院長馮國培教授、副院長兼輔導長王香生教授及書院學生會會長林朝暉同學分別向新生致辭，歡迎本屆加入書院大家庭的同學，並鼓勵他們投入書院生活，善用大學及書院提供的設施及機會，發揮個人潛能並在未來服務同學及社會。


Initiation Ceremony for Freshmen 2011-2012

The 2011-2012 United College Initiation Ceremony for Freshmen was held on Friday, 9 September 2011 at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. More than sixty colleagues attended the Ceremony and the luncheon at the Staff Common Room hosted by the College before. At the Ceremony, Professor Fung Kwok-pui, College Head, Professor Stephen H S Wong, Associate College Head and Dean of Students, and Mr Terence Lin, President of the College Student Union, delivered welcoming speeches to the audience. They welcomed all freshmen to join the College’s big family and encourage them to actively participate in the College activities and to make good use of the facilities and opportunities provided by University and College, hence developing their potentials and serving the fellow students and society in the future.

為加強書院與新生及其家長的聯繫，讓他們更了解書院如何通過全人教育及群體生活，培育學生德、智、體、群、美多方面的發展，院長馮國培教授、副院長、書院行政人員及舍監於2011年10月8日下午2時30分假書院思源文娛中心與新生及家長茶聚，藉此增進溝通，並給予機會新生家長參觀書院設施及享受環境優美的校園。
Tea-gathering with Freshmen and Parents

To strength the connection between the College, freshmen and their parents, and to let them know how the College nurtures students through whole-person education, pastoral care, and in the moral and spiritual enhancement, Professor Fung Kwok-pui, College Head, together with the Associate College Heads, administrators and Wardens, had a tea-gathering with freshmen and parents on 8 October 2011 at 2:30 pm at the College Si Yuan Amenities Centre. It provided an opportunity for parents to learn more about the College facilities and enjoy the beautiful campus.
到訪傑出學人張醒鐘教授

2011至2012年度的「到訪傑出學人」為美國邁阿密大學張醒鐘教授，他將於10月15日至24日到訪香港。

張醒鐘教授是國際著名的生命科學研究專家學者，他分別於2001年及2003年獲委任為奈特生物醫學工程學講座教授和資深退伍軍人研究科學家。張教授在邁阿密大學擁有三個講座教授銜，包括醫學講座教授(1996)、骨科及康復醫學講座教授(1997)和醫學工程學講座教授(2003)。

張教授在洛約拉馬利蒙特大學畢業後，努力不懈，四十多年來致力從事醫學工程的研究。最為人樂道的研究包括幹細胞及再生醫學，他的研究亦延伸至血管生物學的心血管疾病、細胞治療、骨科、糖尿病及風濕病等範疇。張教授爭取研究經費的力能極強，在他領導下的研究計劃總額超過三千萬美元，並持有多項有盈利貢獻的專利權。

張教授於2010年為電子書《幹細胞及再生醫學》擔任編輯一職，亦為當代風濕病回顧特刊《幹細胞、軟骨復修和骨關節炎》作客席編輯。他身兼國家衛生研究院、退伍軍人功勳評審委員會、多個基金及關節炎基金會細胞生物學研究小組成員。最近，他更出任美國科學促進協會及荷蘭科學研究組的研究競爭力計劃評審。

將學術研究成果商業化是現今科學家的重大挑戰，張教授是國家科學基金的生物表面中心總監及邁阿密大學細胞治療及組織工程計劃的聯合總監。他擁有超過二十五年擔任生物工程企業顧問和科學委員會成員的經驗，並持有不少授權經銷協議。對張醒鐘教授來說，工作中最要好的「不是從事頂尖研究」，而是「見證著年輕一輩的成功」。張教授桃李滿天下，受他教益而不同專業的學生都成為了團隊領袖、獎項得主和大學教授。他的個性啟發學生成為充滿朝氣、正直不苛和有品味的研究學者。

張醒鐘教授是次訪問期間，將主持兩個公開講座及一次夜話，講題及詳情如下：

Distinguished Visiting Scholar Professor Herman Cheung

Professor Herman Cheung, University of Miami, will visit Hong Kong between 15 and 24 October 2011 as the College’s Distinguished Visiting Scholar in 2011-12.

Professor Cheung is an internationally renowned researcher and scholar in life sciences. He was bestowed the James L Knight Professorship in 2001 and appointed Senior Veteran Affairs Research Career Scientist in 2003. In addition, he holds 3 professorships at the University of Miami – Professor of Medicine since 1996, Professor of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation since 1997, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering since 2003.

In his long academic career over 4 decades since he received B.S. of Biological Sciences from Loyola Marymount University, he is the leading expert in biomedical engineering, renowned in his research in stem cells and regenerative medicine, extended to applications to vascular biology of cardiovascular diseases, and cell-based therapy, orthopaedic complications, diabetes and autoimmunity. Professor Cheung’s ability to attract grants is extraordinary, he was P-I or Co-I of research programs with well over US$30 million and holds a number of profitable patents.

Professor Cheung serves as editor of the e-Book “Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine” 2010 and guest editor for the Current Rheumatology Review Special Issue “Stem Cells, Cartilage Repair and Osteoarthritis”. He was a member of NIH study sections, VA Merit Review Boards, various foundations, the Cell Biology Study Section of the Arthritis Foundation. More recently, he serves as reviewer for the Research Competitiveness Programme (RCP) at the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology Foundation STW, Dutch Organization for Scientific Research, The Netherlands.

To be successful in commercialization of one’s research outcome is the challenge of modern day scientists. Professor Cheung is the site Director of National Science Foundation Industry/University Center for Biosurfaces and co-Director of the Cellular Therapy and Tissue Engineering Initiative at University of Miami. For more than 25 years, Professor Cheung has been consultant and science board member of several biotechnological companies and holder of a number of licensing agreements. To Professor Cheung, the best part of his job is “not cutting-edge research”, but “seeing young people succeed”. His mentorship covers scores of students specialized in different professional fields as team leaders, award winners and professors. He personally affects his students to be lively, upright and stylish researcher.

During his visit to United College, Professor Cheung will deliver two public lectures and host a night talk. Details are given below.

United We Advance Ninth Issue

The ninth issue of United We Advance has been published in September 2011. The theme of this issue is “Confronting Challenges, Scaling New Peaks ― The Rhode Scholars of United College” for distribution to various departments/units of the University, tertiary institutions, public libraries, all members of United College Alumni Association as well as secondary schools in Hong Kong. The Editorial Committee of United We Advance also invites articles from staff, alumni and students of United College. 「常宗豪教授紀念書畫展」徇眾要求延長展期

由香港中文大學聯合書院及中國語言及文學系合辦的「常宗豪教授紀念書畫展」己於2011年8月27日正式開幕，聯合書院院長馮國培教授、常宗豪夫人及中國語言及文學系系主任何志華教授應邀在開幕禮上致辭。因反應熱烈，展期現延長至10月26日，歡迎到臨聯合書院胡忠多媒體圖書館二樓參觀。

常宗豪教授號恕齋，1937年生於山東煙台牟平縣。47年移居香港，六十年代初入讀香港中文大學，為中大聯合書院校友，以優異成績畢業並留校任教。1978年出任香港中文大學中國語言及文學系系主任，以迄1987年，弘揚國學，孜孜不倦。常教授博通群經，諸子百家，無不涉獵，能書善畫，1996年獲香港國際創價學會頒贈香港SGI獎，以表彰先生多年來對藝術及文化之貢獻。先生1997年於香港中文大學退休，續任珠海書院文史研究所及新亞研究所教授、香港藝術館及澳門博物館顧問。先生學殖深醇，儒林望重；春風化雨，桃李芳菲。先生晚年移居澳門，2005年，澳門藝術博物館主辦「綆短汲深——常宗豪書畫展」並出版《綆短汲深─常宗豪書畫》。先生著有《靈巫與九歌》、《唐五代詞講義》、《九歌新論》等。先生於2010年6月26日於澳門病逝，享壽七十三歲。為紀念先生對聯合書院及中國語言及文學系之貢獻並展示其藝術成就，特舉辦是次展覽。

“Professor Sheung Chung Ho Memorial Exhibition of Calligraphy and Painting” ― Exhibition Period Extended
The exhibition period of “Professor Sheung Chung Ho Memorial Exhibition of Calligraphy and Painting” is extended to 26 October 2011 in response to public need. The exhibition, co-organised by United College and Department of Chinese Language and Literature, is held at 2/F, Wu Chung Multimedia Library, United College. Professor Fung Kwok-pui, Head of United College, Mrs Sheung Chung Ho and Professor Ho Che-wah, Chairman of Department of Chinese Language and Literature addressed in the opening ceremony on 27 August 2011.

Professor Sheung, alias Shu Zhai, was born in 1937 at Muping, Yantai of Shandong Province. He then migrated to Hong Kong in 1947 and studied in United College in 1960s, majoring in Chinese Language. He kicked off his teaching career in the University immediately after graduation with very outstanding academic achievements. In 1978, Professor Sheung became the Chairman of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, and
retired in 1997.

After his retirement in CUHK, Professor Sheung became the Professor of Institute of Chinese Literature and Chinese History of Chu Hai College and New Asia Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies, and also consultant to Hong Kong Museum of Art and Macao Museum. He was a renowned and knowledgeable scholar, with a variety of works, and gained great respect from his students. In 2005, an exhibition “Paintings and Calligraphies of Sheung Chung Ho” was held by the Macao Museum of Art and an album of paintings with the same title was published. Professor Sheung passed away on 26 June 2010 in Macau, aged 73. An exhibition is organised in memory of Professor Sheung and his contribution to the United College with achievement in calligraphy and painting.

Sunday 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm

大學本科入學資訊日

大學本科入學資訊日於2011年10月8日至9日舉行，兩天合共約一千三百位中學生及家人前往參觀聯合書院各項設施，包括：天機電算室、胡忠多媒體圖書館、學生宿舍、張煊昌體育館、體育設施及岑才生聯合書院校史文物館等。
Orientation Day for Undergraduate Admissions

The Orientation Day for Undergraduate Admissions was held on 8 and 9 October 2011. The College student hostels, Wu Chung Multimedia Library, Tien Chi Microcomputer Laboratory, Shum Choi Sang United College Archives, Thomas HC Cheung Gymnasium, other sports facilities, etc. were opened for visit. About 1,300 secondary school students and their parents visited the College campus on these two days.

2011年9月23日於大學邵逸夫堂舉行的書院聚會中，院長馮國培教授及副院長兼輔導長王香生教授歡迎2011-2012年度書院新任教職成員並送上書院紀念品。

是次聚會特別安排本年度「聯合書院學生生活約章」簽署儀式，邀請到學生會會長、學生會監議會主席、湯若望宿舍宿生會主席、伯利衡宿舍宿生會主席、及六舍堂主席/會長簽署約章，並邀得多位嘉賓簽署作見證，包括馮慶鏘校董、校友會會長殷巧兒校董、馮國培教授、王香生教授、湯若望宿舍舍監麥陳淑賢教授、伯利衡宿舍舍監陳德有博士、恒生樓舍監黃安東先生、陳震夏宿舍舍監李詠恩教授、百全堂堂監馮應謙教授及秉芬堂堂監鄧麗暚教授。
 
儀式後百全堂會長及秉芬堂會長為堂慶三十周年作簡介。同時由馮國培院長、王香生副院長及秉芬堂堂監鄧麗暚教授致送紀念品予馮慶鏘校董(已故前校董會主席馮秉芬爵士之公子)作為紀念。

是次書院聚會，書院邀請到歷史系何佩然教授擔任演講嘉賓，以「香港華商的崛起及其社會角色」為題，與一千四百多位聯合同學作分享。講座內容豐富，受到各方面讚賞。



College Assembly—30th Anniversary of Non-residential Halls’ Pak Chuen Hall and Ping Fan Hall

Topic: Emergence of Chinese Merchants and Their Roles in Hong Kong Society
Speaker: Professor Ho Pui-yin

At the College Assembly held on 23 September 2011 at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, Professor Fung Kwok-pui, College Head and Professor Stephen H S Wong, Associate College Head and Dean of Students welcomed 2011-2012 new staff members of United College and presented college souvenirs to them.

A Signing Ceremony of the Student Life Charter was also arranged, with signatures by President and Council Chairman of the Student Union and Presidents/Chairpersons of six hall associations, witnessed by Mr Kenneth H C Fung (Trustee), Ms Lina H Y Yan (Trustee and President of Alumni Association), Professor Fung Kwok-pui, Professor Stephen H S Wong, Professor Barley S Y Mak (Warden of Adam Schall Residence), Dr T Y Chan (Warden of Bethlehem Hall), Mr O T Wong (Warden of Hang Seng Hall), Professor Vivian W Y Lee (Warden of Chan Chun Ha Hostel), Professor Anthony Y H Fung (Warden of Pak Chuen Hall), and Professor Eunice L Y Tang (Warden of Ping Fan Hall).

Following the Signing Ceremony was an introduction of Pak Chuen Hall and Ping Fan Hall at the 30th Anniversary Celebration delivered by Chairpersons of Pak Chuen Hall and Ping Fan Hall. A souvenir was presented to Mr Kenneth H C Fung (son of the late Sir Fung Ping Fan, Former Chairman of the College Board of Trustees) by Professor Fung Kwok-pui, Professor Stephen H S Wong, and Professor Eunice L Y Tang.

Professor Ho Pui-yin of the Department of History delivered the talk on “Emergence of Chinese Merchants and Their Roles in Hong Kong Society” in the College Assembly. It was well received by over one thousand and four hundred United College students.



走讀生舍堂成立三十周年高桌晚宴

為慶祝聯合書院走讀生舍堂——百全堂及秉芬堂成立三十周年，兩舍堂於2011年9月23日晚上在聯合書院文怡閣舉行高桌晚宴，邀請著名電台節目主持人麥潤壽先生蒞臨及擔任演講嘉賓，講題為「逆境中的堅持」。當晚有八十多位嘉賓和同學出席，包括院長馮國培教授、百全堂前任堂監朱利民教授、六舍堂舍監及堂監、走讀生舍堂前任幹事、學生團體代表、書院同仁及走讀生舍堂成員等，共渡了一個既溫馨又愉快的晚上。
Non-residential Halls 30th Anniversary High Table Dinner

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Pak Chuen Hall and Ping Fan Hall, the two UC non-residential halls organised a High Table Dinner in the evening of 23 September 2011 at the United College Staff Common Room. Mr Francis Y S Mak , a famous Radio Programmme Presenter of RTHK, was invited to deliver a talk on “Never-give-up in Adversities” at this occasion. Over 80 people including Professor Fung Kwok-pui, College Head; Professor Chu Lee-man, former Warden of Pak Chuen Hall; wardens of six halls, former office-bearers of the non-residential halls, representatives from student societies, officers of the College and members of the non-residential halls were there to share the fun.



書院聚會——埃及與中國書法的比較研究

2011年10月10日黄昏，聯合書院假大學鄭裕彤樓一號講堂舉行書院聚會。欣蒙聯合書院洽蕙藝文訪問學人王海城教授擔任演講嘉賓，以「埃及與中國書法的比較研究」為題，為四百多位聯合同學帶來寶貴的研究分享。
College Assembly — Beautiful Writing in China and Egypt

A College Assembly was held by United College in the evening of 10 October 2011, at Lecture Theatre 1 of Cheng Yu Tung Building. The College was honored to have Professor Wang Haicheng, Hop Wai Visiting Fellow in Art and Culture of United College , to be the guest speaker. Professor Wang shared his valuable views with over 400 United College students with the topic “Beautiful Writing in China and Egypt”.
書院午餐講座

由書院生活委員會及文化藝術委員會合辦的午餐講已於2011年10月11日假文怡閣舉行，主講嘉賓為聯合書院洽蕙藝文訪問學人王海城教授，講題為「由歐亞物質文化交流談世界藝術史上的借鑒與解放」。
College Luncheon Talk

Co-organised by College Life Committee and Task Force on Arts and Culture, the College Luncheon Talk was held on 11 October 2011 at the College Staff Common Room. Professor Wang Haicheng, Hop Wai Visiting Fellow in Art and Culture of United College, delivered a talk on “From Material Exchange in Eurasia to Liberating Appropriations in World Art ”.
書院支持「香港無冷氣夜」

為支持由環保觸覺主辦的「香港無冷氣夜」活動，聯合書院鼓勵四所宿舍、聯合苑、張祝珊師生康樂大樓及聯合書院範圍內的課室於2011年9月29日晚上7時至2011年9月30日早上7時關掉空調，以減少溫室氣體排放。


UC Supported the “Hong Kong No Air-con Night”

United College supported the “Hong Kong No Air-con Night” organised by Green Sense and encouraged the residents and users of four College hostels, United College Staff Residence, Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities Building and classrooms on United College campus to switch off the air conditioners from 7:00 pm on 29 September 2011 to 7:00 am on 30 September 2011 so as to reduce greenhouse gases.

書院思源文娛中心會所管理委員會於2011年9月11日舉辦兒童冰皮月餅製作工作坊，約二十多名教職員、校友及其子女參加。

The College Si Yuan Amenities Centre Club Management Committee organised a Snowy Mini Mooncake Workshop for Children on 11 September 2011. About twenty alumni, staff and their children attended the workshop.
