College Trustee Dr Choi Koon-shum was conferred the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa by Lingnan University on 31 October 2011, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to education and the well-being of society. Dr Choi is highly recognised for his steadfast support for education and technology development, as well as arts and cultural projects in Hong Kong, mainland China and overseas. He has provided a wide range of scholarships to the underprivileged students. Our heartfelt congratulations to Dr Choi! |

College Trustee, Dr Lee Shau-kee was conferred the degree of Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa by Hong Kong Baptist University on 7 November 2011. College Trustee, Dr Fong Yun-wah, will be conferred Honorary Doctorate at the 17th Congregation of the Hong Kong Institution of Education (HKIEd) on 2 December 2011. Dr Fong has been actively engaged in educational causes. His commitment and contribution to educational development are reflected in his support for local tertiary institutions and non-profit organisations. Dr Fong’s benevolence has also extended to Mainland China, with the establishment of school premises across different provinces and cities. Our heartfelt congratulations to Dr Fong! |

| 聯合校友及學生於中大高爾夫球日奪獎 | |||||||||||||||
聯合學生及校友於2011年11月4日參加假深圳觀瀾湖高爾夫球會維傑球場舉行的中大高爾夫球日。聯合書院隊勇奪「中大盃隊際淨桿獎」亞軍，隊員包括：張耀成博士(74/ 數學)、林炎南先生(80/市場)、葉冠東先生(86/財務)及水森崇善同學(日本研究/1)。其中聯合的水森崇善同學更奪得「男子組最遠距離獎」、「男子組個人淨桿獎」及「男子組個人總桿獎」。是次活動參加者除了互相切磋球技，更為大學籌集善款，支持學生發展項目。 |

| UC Alumni and Student Won Awards in CUHK Golf Day | |||||||||||||||
|
UC students and alumni joined the CUHK Golf Day 2011, held at the Vijay Course of Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen, on 4 November 2011. The College team, comprising four members, Dr Cheung Yiu-sing (74/PMA), Mr Lam Yim-nam (80/MKT), Mr IP Koon-tung (86/FIN) and Mr Takayoshi Mizumori (JASP/1), won the 1st runner-up in “CU Cup– Best Net”. UC student Mr Takayoshi Mizumori won three prizes including “Men’s Longest Drive”, “Men’s Individual–Best Net” and “Men’s Individual–Best Gross”. The participants not only enjoyed a fun day at the golf course, but also raised funds for the University to support student development. |

| 聯合書院五十五周年院慶紀盛 | |||||||||||||||
聯合書院慶祝五十五周年院慶，書院及學生會攜手共賀書院生日，舉行了一連串活動，包括10月14日下午舉行的「院慶活動開幕禮」及「聯合起跑」、10月18日舉行的「大笪地」及於10月21日舉行的五十五周年院慶典禮，當日嘉賓及學生逾千人出席參與盛會。典禮後，書院隨即於校園舉行由學生會主持的院慶生日會。會上除有傳統醒獅助慶外，書院教職員聯誼會更送出一個大蛋糕，倍添喜氣。 慶祝活動的高潮為21日晚上於校園舉行的千人宴，有近千師生、校友及同學參加。晚會節目安排豐富，除了樂隊、舞蹈及歌唱表演外，當晚亦進行幸運抽獎，禮物均由熱心書院同仁、校董及校友贊助，書院校友會更慷慨送出全場燒豬。 |

| United College 55th Anniversary Celebrations | |||||||||||||||
|
A series of celebration activities including the Opening Ceremony, UC Run, the Outdoor Bazaar and the 55th Anniversary Ceremony were concluded on 21 October 2011. Over a thousand students and guests of the College attended the Anniversary Ceremony at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. The Ceremony was followed by a Birthday Party held on the College campus. The celebration reached its climax with the lion dance by the College Chinese Martial Arts Society and the cutting of birthday cake sponsored by the College Staff Association. The highlight of the anniversary activities was the “feast-for-a-thousand” held in the evening. About a thousand College staff, students, alumni and guests enjoyed the dinner. College Trustees, alumni and staff donated an assortment of prizes for the raffle. The College Alumni Association sponsored a roasted pig for the banquet. |

| 「到訪傑出學人」張醒鐘教授 | |||||||||||||||
|
美國邁阿密大學奈特生物醫學工程學講座教授兼資深退伍軍人研究科學家張醒鐘教授出任本年度書院「到訪傑出學人」。 張醒鐘教授於2011年10月15日至24日到訪香港期間，主持了兩個公開講座，題目為「幹細胞再生醫學的新近發展和挑戰」和「企業創新和學術研究可以並存嗎﹖」。他亦出席由眼科及視覺科學學系主辦的學術活動，以及由學系和書院合辦的夜話等。張教授及母親張廖鳳和女士更於10月21日一同出席書院五十五周年的慶祝活動。書院感謝各單位及老師的協助，使張教授的訪問能圓滿舉行。 |

| Distinguished Visiting Scholar—Professor Herman S Cheung | |||||||||||||||
Professor Herman S Cheung, James L Knight Professor of Biomedical Engineering of University of Miami and Senior Veteran Affairs Research Career Scientist, visited Hong Kong between 15 and 24 October 2011 as the College’s Distinguished Visiting Scholar in 2011-2012. Professor Cheung’s public lecture topics were “Advances and Challenges of Stem Cell-based Regenerative Medicine” and “Can Entrepreneurship Co-exist with Academia Research?”. He attended several seminars and meetings, together with a night talk jointly organised by the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and United College.Professor Cheung and his mother, Mrs Angela Cheung, also attended the College’s 55th Anniversary activities on 21 October 2011. The College would like to thank all those units and colleagues involved, for making the visitation a success. |

| 美育發展計劃：《藝術中與西》講座系列 | |||||||||||||||
|
由聯合書院及崇基學院主辦，洽蕙藝術及文化發展基金贊助，聯合書院藝術顧問利漢楨教授、美國華盛頓大學藝術史部助理教授王海城教授及資深書院導師暨中大藝術系兼任講師張惠儀博士合作開辦的《藝術中與西》講座，課題為「中外藝術館(二)」，已於2011年11月3日完成。參加者從講座中瞭解到內地及海外藝術館的收藏及特色，獲益良多。 |

| Programme for Aesthetic Development : Art East and West Seminar Series | |||||||||||||||
|
The Art East and West Seminar Series “Museums Around the World”, led by Professor Lee Hon-ching, Art Advisor of United College, Professor Wang Haicheng, Assistant Professor, Division of Art History, University of Washington, USA and Dr Cheung Wai-yee, Senior College Tutor and Part-time Lecturer of the Department of Fine Arts, was concluded on 3 November 2011. This seminar series was jointly organised by United College and Chung Chi College and sponsored by Hop Wai Arts and Cultural Development Fund. Participants acquired knowledge on collections and characteristics of different museums in mainland and overseas during the seminar series. |

| College Assembly—The Science of Climate Change | |||||||||||||||
Our alumnus, Professor Gabriel Lau of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory of Princeton University, USA (74/PHY), returned the alma mater to celebrate the College’s 55th Anniversary, and became the guest speaker in College Assembly held on 17 October 2011 at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, with the topic “The Science of Climate Change”. Professor Lau shared his research findings with United College students and enlightened them the problem of global warming. |

書院欣蒙1957年第一屆畢業校友何萬森校董，於2011年10月19日假大學邵逸夫堂所舉行的書院聚會中擔任演講嘉賓。何校董以「聯合書院五十五周年：從篳路藍縷到氣象萬千」為題，配合珍貴的相片和資料，娓娓道來1956年聯合書院成立前後一段段引人入勝的故事，以及書院成長之路的苦與樂。同學不僅認識到四、五十年代香港早期專上教育的發展，亦加深了解書院的發展歷程，增加對書院的歸屬感。 |

| College Assembly—United College 55th Anniversary: From Adversity to Prosperity | |||||||||||||||
Mr Ho Man-sum, College Trustee and alumnus of 1957 graduate class, spoke on the College Assembly held on 19 October 2011 at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. The topic of the College Assembly was “United College 55th Anniversary: From Adversity to Prosperity”. Mr Ho shared with the participants the stories of United College in its early years with lots of invaluable photos and information. Students learnt the development of higher education in Hong Kong during 40’s and 50’s and gained a better understanding about the history of United College to cultivate their sense of belonging towards the College. |

| 湯若望宿舍四十周年誌慶 | |||||||||||||||
湯若望宿舍四十周年籌委會將於2012年2月份舉辦一連串的活動，以慶祝宿舍成立四十周年。湯若望宿舍四十周年誌慶節目眾多，籌委會現誠邀各屆宿友一同參加，互聚情誼，共同紀念住校日子。 為讓歷屆宿生抒發對湯宿的情感，其中一項活動是徵集相片及散文，以住宿期間的難忘回憶或軼事為主題。參加者可透過電郵或Facebook 於明年二月前提交。所收集的相片將於2月份在湯宿大堂展出，文字作品則會刊登於《四十周年紀念特刊》內。 「湯宿之友」壓軸晚宴，將於2012年2月11日舉行，節目包括表演、遊戲、分享、抽獎及短片播放等，歷屆宿生可以藉此機會聚首一堂。當日中午還有植樹及球賽活動，誠邀校友及宿生一同參加。籌委會亦有意召募舊生籌辦湯宿舊生會，有志人士可透過電郵聯絡。 有關活動詳請，將於2011年12月出版的《聯合校友》公佈，最新消息可參閱http://on.fb.me/asr40。查詢及投稿請電郵至alumni@ucasr.org與籌委會聯絡。 |

| 40th Anniversary of Adam Schall Residence | |||||||||||||||
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Adam Schall Residence (ASR), a series of activities will be organised in February 2012. ASR alumni and current residents are welcome to join these activities. The organising committee is now calling for essays and photos with the theme of reminiscences and interesting stories during the residence. All photos and essays can be submitted through email or Facebook by February 2012. Collected photos will be exhibited in the hostel lobby in February; whereas essays will be published in "ASR 40th Anniversary Celebration". The annual alumni reunion dinner, with performances, games, sharing, lucky draw and video playbacks, will be held on 11 February 2012. In the afternoon on the day, former residents are also invited to participate in ball games and tree planting activities. In addition, the committee is seeking for active members to coordinate the establishment of ASR Alumni Association. All former and current residents of ASR are welcome to join the celebration activities. Details will be announced through “United Alumni Newsletter” in December 2011.
