Professor Xu Yangsheng

Professor Xu Yangsheng is Professor of Automation and Computer-Aided Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He studied Engineering at Zhejiang University, China and received his BEng and MEng degrees in 1982 and 1984 respectively. He pursued further studies at the University of Pennsylvania and received his Ph.D. in 1989. He then worked on robotics research at Carnegie Mellon University from 1989 to 1997, and joined CUHK in 1997, serving as chairman of the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering from 1997 to 2004, and Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor (Mainland Affairs) from 2006 to 2008. He is currently Director of the CAS-CUHK Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Integration Technology and was appointed Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor in 2008.

Professor Xu's research includes space robotics, intelligent control and systems, and human interface. He has developed over 30 robotic systems and led over 20 projects funded by government and industries. More recently, he has been interested in service robotics, man-machine interface and intelligent hybrid electric vehicles. His research has resulted in over 300 publications including three monographs and one edited book. He was elected as Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of HKIE, Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Science, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Academician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, and Corresponding Member of International Academy of Astronautics.

Professor Xu has actively participated in various professional activities. He served as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation from 1997 to 2000, a Board Director of Hong Kong Productivity Council from 2003 to 2006, and an Advisor of Chinese Hi-tech Program on Aerospace Committee from 2004 to 2006. He is currently a Council Member of the Chinese Society of Automation and an Advisor of the Decision and Advisory Committee of Shenzhen Municipal Government.
