Professor Jack C.Y. Cheng

Professor Jack C.Y. Cheng is Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Professor Cheng obtained his MB BS degree from the University of Hong Kong in 1976. He was awarded Commonwealth Medical Fellowships at University of Oxford (1982) and University of Edinburgh (1983). He is a Fellow of RCSEd, RCSEd (Orth) and RCSGlas. In 1999, he received MD with Award of Merits from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Professor Cheng joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1983. He has been Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Sub-Dean (Medical Education) and Associate Dean (Education) of the Faculty of Medicine, and University Dean of Students. In 2002, he was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor overseeing academic exchanges and collaborations, student affairs, undergraduate student admissions, and student exchanges.

Professor Cheng has received numerous awards for his outstanding work in research. His research interests include orthopaedic surgery, paediatric orthopaedics, etiology and etiopathogenesis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, congenital muscular torticollis, and biomaterial basic science and applied studies. He has published over 200 publications in peer-reviewed international journals and contributed to 15 book chapters. He serves on the editorial boards of professional journals, including Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery, Journal of Paediatric Orthopaedics, Journal of Orthopaedic Science, Chinese Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Chinese Journal of Spine and Spinal Cord, and Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research. He is also an invited reviewer of international journals, such as The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (British), Archives of Disease in Childhood, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, and Pediatrics. He is a fellow and member of over 20 local and international professional and medical organizations.

Professor Cheng is a paediatric orthopaedics specialist. He has been invited to serve as visiting professor by leading academic institutions in Mainland China and Taiwan, including Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Sciences, Chongqing University of Medical Sciences, Medical University of Shanghai, Sichuan University, The Second Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University, Nanjing University, National Cheng Kung University of Taiwan, and Tianjin Orthopaedic Hospital.

Professor Cheng plays an active role in community services. He has served on a number of committees of Hong Kong Medical Council, Supplementary Medical Professions Council Committee of Department of Health, and various committees of Hong Kong Hospital Authority. He is also the medical adviser to Hong Kong Spastic Association, Hong Kong Physically Handicapped and Able-Bodied Association, and Hong Kong Childhood Injury Prevention Research Association.
