Background
 


The Chinese University of Hong Kong has, since its inception, devoted itself to the modernization and promulgation of Chinese culture through studies in the humanities and social sciences. Visionary Chinese scholars were among the University's founders and teachers. Today, building on this invaluable legacy of scholarship, CUHK has evolved into an institution with roots in Chinese culture and eye on the world.

 
 
Our Focus
 
At CUHK, Chinese Studies is a flourishing field comprising five clusters of sub-areas which represent the current combined strengths of academic staff from different units.

Language, Literature and Performing Arts
philology, linguistics, dialect studies, translation, sign language, language acquisition, Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, classical and modern Chinese literature, Hong Kong literature, translated literature, creative writing, Cantonese opera, ethnomusicology, Chinese and Hong Kong movies
Heritage and History
public and social history, anthropology, archaeology, art history, museum studies, architecture, Chinese diaspora, regional cultures and histories, Confucian studies, Taoism, Buddhism, popular religions, Christianity in China, ethics
Social and Regional Developments
poverty, gender, civil society, ethnicity, urban and rural issues, education, mass media and communication, cyber culture, globalization and regional developments
Political and Legal Developments
government and public administration, constitutionalism and rights regime, public sphere, political thought, Cultural Revolution studies, the Rule of Law, legal reforms, corporate governance, and institutional reforms for market economy
Public Health and Environment
medical sociology, education and economics of public health, pollution and environmental issues, disease and epidemiology in the humanities and social science, food culture and safety, GIS health care studies, health care organizations and policies, medical legal framework
 
We are also forming thematic teams of multidisciplinary researchers to develop full-fledged Areas of Excellence related to Chinese Studies in the next 10 years. Themes currently under construction include

with more expected to emerge soon.

We will also develop online databases to make Chinese language research data and materials more accessible to Chinese Studies researchers around the world.
