Students’ Biological Cryptogrpahy System Wins

A team of 11 students from the Biochemistry
Programme of the School of Life Sciences
developed a new encrypt-and-store information
system for the plasmid DNA of Escherichia coli
under the supervision of Prof. Chan King-ming,
Prof. Chan Ting-fung, and Prof. Kong Siu-kai of
the school. The team entered the innovative
project into International Genetically
Engineered Machine (iGEM) 2010 competition
organized by the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) in the US, competing against
138 teams and over 1,900 participants from
around the world. The CUHK team walked away with
the gold award.

| 中大生崭新生物加密系统夺金 |
| 生命科学学院生物化学课程十一名学生在该院陈竟明教授、陈廷峰教授及江绍佳教授的指导下，编制了一套崭新的生物储存、加密和提取系统，证明用大肠杆菌的质粒基因来储存庞大数据，并在2010年度国际基因机器设计大赛中摘金。比赛由美国麻省理工学院举基因机器设计大赛中摘金。比赛由美国麻省理工学院举办，有一百三十八队共一千九百多名来自全球各地的大学生参赛。 |

The Chinese University of Hong Kong signed an
agreement with CFA Institute on 29 November, the
global association for investment professionals,
recognizing the university as a CFA Program
Partner. This recognition signals to potential
students, employers, and the marketplace that
the university curriculum is closely tied to
professional practice and is well suited to
preparing students for CFA examinations and
ultimately employment in the finance and
investment industry. |

在学术上，这里有非常优秀而且负责的教授。这些教授来自全球各地，拥有不同的文化背景，而且见多识广，乐于与同学分享。在课堂上与课后的交流中，我极大地开拓了视野，受到了很大的启发。此外，学校还提供非常多的其它学术资源。六间图书馆有相当数量的藏书，还有各种电子期刊和影视资源。大量的自习室提供足够的空间供大家学习。关于各种话题的学术讲座让你增广见闻。总之，只要充分利用，你会觉得非常之受用。
在课外生活上，这里有丰富的选择。数之不尽的社团和短庄让你有充分的机会接触到这里的学生活动，并领略到很多课堂上学习不到的经验。其次，这里有很多交流的机会，不管是短期的还是长期的，都令人目不暇接。这里有一种交换的氛围，人人都想到处去走走去看看，去不同的国家。再者，这里有很多活动可以参加，从大量的选择中找一些有兴趣的，确是一件让人高兴的事。
学校对内地生是很照顾的，在香港这个寸土寸金的地方提供四年的住宿的确很难得。并且学校还为内地生专门安排了学习辅导主任以及各种书院辅导，目的就是让内地同学更好地融入到本地的生活当中。所以，来到这里的人都有理由相信自己可以很好地适应这里的环境。

| Choo Yeon-jae Sam’s family moved to Tianjin
when he was 13 due to his father’s job. He went
to an international school, and spoke only a
little Putonghua. When it was time to choose a
college, he looked for universities in
English-speaking countries. Then he stumbled
upon the University’s Chinese Studies programme
which is tailor-made for international students. |

| Born in Hong Kong, Lee Hee-won Catherine
went to a local international school. She spent
her high school years in Shenzhen since her
father had moved there for work.
Catherine is the first Korean student in the
Faculty of Law. Why law? ‘My grandfather was a
lawyer. I also thought of law as a way to remedy
injustice. I like Hong Kong. I am a
family-oriented person who likes staying close
to my family.’ |

李希苑出生于香港，一直在港念国际学校，直至高中时因父亲转到深圳工作，她亦随之转到当地求学。
希苑是法律学院首名韩国本科生，为何选法律？「是受到当律师的祖父影响，而我相信法律是改变不公义的一种途径。再说，我喜欢香港，更希望不需离家太远。」 |

Kim Eun-hye Grace moved to Hong Kong with her
family when she was young. She loves the
diversity of the city and decides to go to a
local university. She is interested in law
because her father’s career is related to it.
Moreover, she believes that law helps
maintain justice.
Grace had gone to an international school
before joining CUHK. She doesn’t have problems
communicating as she finds that most of her
classmates speak fluent English. However she
finds it hard to adapt to local culture
especially when people around her are conversing
in Cantonese. Her feeling of loneliness was
exacerbated when her parents moved to Shenzhen
for work. But after a year, she got used to

自小随父母移居香港，金恩惠很喜欢这里的多元化，所以不作他想，决定在港升读大学。修读法律除因父亲也是从事相关行业外，也因她认为法律有助伸张公义。
从国际学校转到中大，恩惠指出与同学沟通没有多大障碍，因为「同学们的英语十分流利」，但文化总有不同，需要花点时间适应，尤其是周围的人都在说广东话时。加上双亲又因工作而移居深圳，更让她有孤单的感觉。经历了年多的考验，她总算习惯下来了。 |

Lee Hun-hee Angela’s family had moved to
Beijing when she was nine. Since her father
wanted Angela to learn Chinese, she was
transferred from an international school in
Beijing to a high school affiliated with Beijing
Normal University. This was where Angela began
learning Putonghua. Angela has always preferred
studying at an Asian university, and since her
family had moved to Guangzhou, Hong Kong
became her first choice. |

九岁便举家移居北京的李宪禧，上的是国际学校，不过父亲觉得应多学中文，于是便转校到北京师范大学附属中学念高中，也让她练就一口流利普通话。宪禧希望在亚洲念大学，而刚好家人又转往广州居住，香港便是首选。 |
