颁奖学金支持学生展开南极考察之旅

The Faculty of Engineering is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. A wide range of celebratory activities will be organised to promote engineering education and to share achievements made in the past two decades with the public.

The mission of engineers is to improve and enrich human lives with innovative designs and inventions. Apart from having a broad spectrum of knowledge, they need to care about society. Prof. Kam Fai WONG, Associate Dean (External Affairs) of the Faculty of Engineering, said, 'The Faculty attaches great importance to promoting all-round education for our students. Experiential learning is a meaningful means of education and may yield more fruitful results than classroom learning. Therefore, we encourage students to take part in exchange programmes to broaden their horizons.’

To encourage experiential learning, the Faculty offered a scholarship to Carol Pun, a Year 1 student of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, to join an expedition to the South Pole to witness the effects of climate change on the fragile ecosystem.

The first ‘Executive Leadership Programme in Global Finance’ launched by the Institute of Global Economics and Finance ended with success on 21 January. Over 10 international star lecturers, including Prof. Joseph Yam, former chief executive of Hong Kong Monetary Authority; Prof. Myron S. Scholes (photo left, standing), 1997 Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences; Prof. Robert A. Mundell, CUHK Distinguished Professorat- Large and 1999 Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences; and Dr. Donald L. Kohn, former vice chairman, Board of Governors of the US Federal Reserve System, shared insights on important topics such as the latest global economic developments, the international monetary system, the renminbi as an international currency, asset price bubbles, and financial derivatives and leverage over the six-day programme. The lectures offered customized professional training for the financial sector.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong held a new year party to launch its revamped mentorship scheme which is now renamed as 'CUHK Mentorship Programme'. A number of community leaders joined the scheme, including Sir David Akers-Jones, former Chief Secretary of the Hong Kong Government; Dr. Richard R. Vuylsteke, President of The American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong; Mr. Nicholas R. Sallnow-Smith, Chairman of The Link Management Limited. The celebration also received warm response from mentors including Dr. Paul Kan, 'Father of Multi-lingual Messaging', Mr. James E. Thompson, Chairman of Crown Worldwide Group, etc.  

The Keep Caring Fun Day cum uBuddies Presentation Ceremony organized by the Office of Student Affairs was held on 13 January at the Cultural Square. Prof. Joseph J.Y. Sung, Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Benjamin W. Wah, Provost; Prof. Dennis K.P. Ng, University Dean of Students; and Mr. Raymond Leung, Director of Student Affairs were present to witness the graduation of the 2010 uBuddies (peer counsellors) and the wonderful performances and exciting competitive games. The event also featured the oath-taking of the 30-plus 2011 uBuddies who promised to share their experiences and wisdom with fellow students and promote a caring and supportive culture on campus.
