Three remarkable scientific research projects at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) received the Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Science and Technology) in the category of Natural Sciences from the Ministry of Education. The winning projects are: 'Integrative Research on Molecular Basis and Potential Targets for Gastric Cancer' conducted by Prof. Jun Yu, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, and Prof. Joseph J.Y. Sung, Vice-Chancellor and Mok Hing Yiu Professor of Medicine; 'Concentration Phenomena in Nonlinear Elliptic Equations and Systems' conducted by Prof. Juncheng Wei, Professor of Mathematics; and 'Cholesterol-lowering and Cardiovascular Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals' conducted by Prof. Zhenyu Chen, Professor, School of Life Sciences, and Prof. Yu Huang, Professor, School of Biomedical Sciences.

A research team led by Professor Kam-bo Wong of the Centre for Protein Science and Crystallography, School of Life Sciences at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) demonstrated a fundamental principle in changing the activity of enzymes by means of protein engineering. The findings will provide potential insights into the future design of biotechnologically important enzymes, and was published in the March issue of PLoS Biology, the top ranking journal in biology.

Enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions. They have many applications in the biotech industry. For example, the sugars added to soft drinks are converted from starch by the action of enzymes. Enzymes are also included in laundry detergent to digest protein stains, which are otherwise very difficult to remove.

To better understand the views and experiences of entrepreneurs who graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the Center for Entrepreneurship of CUHK conducted a 'CU Alumni Census of Entrepreneurs' in 2010. Around 30% of alumni found that university education trained up their mind, boosted communications skills and broadened social network (including classmates, alumni, teachers and others) that helped them to start their own business.

The survey also showed that about 44% of the entrepreneurs started up their own business at age 20-29, and 38% of the entrepreneurs set up their businesses with capital less than HKD 100,000. Examples are two passionate CUHK alumni with strong sense of social responsibility, Mr. Ho Man Sum of the 50s and Mr. Ben Cheng of the 80s. Both of them began to develop their business ideas in the university life and they are successful entrepreneurs in the education and information engineering field respectively.

In June 2010, Lorraine Lee, Year 1 student of Geography and Resource Management, joined the Amway Nutrilite Organic Farming Internship Programme
via the CUHK Global Internship Programme to work on an organic farm in Brazil. The two-month internship broadened her knowledge about Brazilian culture and organic farming. She was the second CUHK student to have worked there.

Lorraine has been fond of geography since she was young. ‘It was a rare opportunity to learn organic farming methods on a huge farm. What a meaningful trip it was,’ she observed. She said the programme enabled her to put what she learned into practice and it opened up her horizons.
