A Message from the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid

To keep you abreast with the latest developments of the University and to share with you all the exciting happenings on campus, my Office is issuing an abridged version of CUHK E-News for prospective applicants. Messages from University, sharing by CU's students, campus news and forthcoming events, etc will be the regular features of this newsletter.

CUHK is unique in that it is the only university in Hong Kong that has a college system, where its 10,000 undergraduates learn not only through a comprehensive academic curriculum but also by participating in a wide range of extracurricular activities.

For some of these activities, participation is not restricted to CU members only. You are most welcome to attend a series of public lectures, including those by renowned scholars and prominent leaders from around the world. The University Art Museum is also open to the public, and you may wish to come on a weekend to view its exhibits. A variety of arts and cultural programmes are also being presented on a regular basis at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall.

Information on the various activities and events will be listed in each issue. We understand that some of you are studying on the mainland at the moment and are unable to attend these events. However, the information provided would give you some ideas of the range of activities that are available on campus. For those of you who are here now, you are most welcome to take part in any of the listed activities that is of interest to you.

为让有兴趣的同学能知悉本校的动态和最新发展，本处特将中大出版的电子快讯撮摘成篇，定期向各位发放。每一期的中大电子简讯将会包括由大学信息、学生心声、校园新闻和近期活动。

香港中文大学是香港唯一一所实行书院制的大学。就读的本科生不单可透过常规的课业获取知识，更可借着参与多姿多彩的课外活动扩展视野。

本校举办的各类活动，很多都并非局限于校内人士才能参加。本校的公开讲座系列，经常邀得著名学人或政经界领袖莅临主讲，这些讲座都欢迎各位参加。中大的文物馆亦向各公众开放，有兴趣的亦可于周末前往欣赏馆内展品。本校的邵逸夫堂，亦定期举办不同类型文艺表演。本刊每期将会发布各种活动的举办详情。你们正在内地念书，不能参加本校的活动，也可藉此了解中大的各类活动。如果你身在香港，更欢迎你们多参加这些活动。

CUHK Fok Ying Tung Remote Sensing Science Building Officially Opens

The Chinese University of Hong Kong organized an opening ceremony for the Fok Ying Tung Remote Sensing Science Building on 28 September. The ceremony was officiated by three representatives of the donor, The Honourable Timothy Fok Tsun-ting; Mr Ian Fok Chun-wan; and Mr Benjamin Fok Chun-yue, Directors of the Fok Ying Tung Foundation. Other officiating guests who joined Professor Joseph J.Y. Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK at the ceremony were Dr the Honourable Tung Chee Hwa, Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference; Mr Li Gang, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Mr Lu Xinhua, Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the HKSAR; and Professor Guo Huadong, Director-General of Center for Earth Observation and Digital Earth, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

香港中文大学霍英东遥感科学馆揭幕

香港中文大学9月28日举行霍英东遥感科学馆开幕典礼，邀得以下主礼嘉宾：捐款人代表霍英东基金会董事霍震霆先生、霍震寰先生及霍震宇先生；中国人民政治协商会议全国委员会副主席董建华博士；中央人民政府驻香港特别行政区联络办公室（中联办）副主任李刚先生；国家外交部驻香港特别行政区特派员公署特派员吕新华先生，以及中国科学院对地观测与数字地球科学中心主任郭华东教授，联同中大校长沈祖尧教授一起出席主礼。

CUHK Builds Advanced Eco School in Two Weeks for Sichuan

A research team led by Prof. Zhu Jingxiang of the School of Architecture at The Chinese University of Hong Kong has developed an advanced architectural system for the construction of the New Bud Study Hall in Sichuan this summer. Based on the experience of building the first New Bud Primary School at Xiasi village in Sichuan’s Jiange County, the new Study Hall excels further in energy efficiency and space design, while retaining certain distinguishing features of the first school, such as earthquake resistance, durability and short construction time (two weeks).

中大创新建筑援建四川　两周建成高质环保校舍

继去年在四川地震灾区剑阁县下寺村建成第一所新芽小学后，香港中文大学建筑学院朱竞翔教授率领的研究小组汲取经验，以更先进的建筑系统及创新设计，今夏在四川建成第二所新芽学堂。新校舍除具备第一所新芽小学的优点，如抗震耐用、两周施工期等，在能源效益及空间设计上更迈进了一大步。

当我第一次踏入中大校门，我的心中充满对未知的不安。而现在，经过十多天的体验，我迷惘的心情稍定，取而代之的是对未来了无限期许和对勇往直前的渴望。因为中大已用她包容的姿态安抚和鼓励了我，并激励我前行。

首先是中大的学长学姐们细致的关心让我感动。中大内地生团体MUA就像一个家庭，使内地生们有了归属感。十多天的精彩活动使我们顺利的适应了香港紧张的生活方式。而学校也给了内地生们许多帮助，通过学习辅导主任LEO的讲解及许多精彩的介绍，我认识到中大不仅有优美的学习环境，良好的住宿条件，令人心旷神怡的山海风光，还有丰富的学习资源：数座具有一定规模的纸质及多媒体图书馆，丰富的体育设施，优秀的同学，多元文化的交织激荡……令我对未来的学习充满信心。

香港是一个我们通往世界的桥梁，而中大，则是我们读书和实践的绝好平台，只要努力，就一定会有收获。

I am Karen, a Year 2 student of the Sociology Department. I gained a lot of valuable experience in my first year at the Chinese University of Hong Kong last year. I believe that choosing this elite university is definitely the right choice for me, well worth the long journey I made to be here.

After years of studies in England, it has taken me some time to adapt to my life in Hong Kong. Luckily, the Sociology Department provides really good care to students. Some classes are small, providing platforms for professors and students to exchange ideas and questions. I am amazed by how approachable and friendly professors could be - they are my teachers as well as my friends and they love to share their professional knowledge and advice. As a result, I can consistently achieve good results academically and meet all expectations. I have worked extremely hard and I have successfully balanced the study workload with an enjoyable university life. I am confident that I will take up more challenges through participating in different kinds of activities in future.

我是Karen，我是社会学系二年级的学生。在香港中文大学读书的一年的体验，令我更相信选择这所优秀的大学，绝对是一个正确的选择。虽然走了一条很长的路来到这里，但是很值得。

因为在入大学前，我是在英国读书的，所以回来读书，我需要时间适应这里的生活。而幸运地社会学系对学生很关顾，有些学科人数较少，为教授和学生们提供平台交流想法和问题。最令我意想不到的是与教授们的关系亦师亦友，他们常常教导我们和分享意见。所以，我可以很好地应付学业。一年过去，我努力学业，同时也体验了愉快的大学生活。我有信心将来可以接受更多新的挑战。
