Chung Chi College held its second talk of the 75th anniversary Excellence Talk Series on 11 April, with the theme “Prosperous Aging” aiming to provide tips for people concerned about a redundant retirement. Two internationally renowned professionals, Dr. Chan Tak Lam Norman and Professor Lin Zhixiu, were invited to share insights on financial planning for retirement and Chinese medicine conditioning respectively, and over 600 attendances participated in the event. Wise Management of Finance for Retired Middle Class The morning session was delivered by the Chairman of the Chung Chi College Board of Trustees, Dr. Chan Tak Lam Norman, who is also Vice-Chairman of the CUHK Council and the former Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). Dr. Chan delivered a talk and shared his insights on “Wise Management of Finance for Retired Middle Class”. Professor Lo Yuk Ming Dennis, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, also attended the talk. Dr. Chan started his talk by pointing out the three pillars for elder middle class: good health, secure assets and a happy attitude. He then described the three financial pillars for retirees and the financial changes that Hong Kong’s middle class usually face after retirement. He explained that, as the tradition of parents depending on their children is loosening, without a working salary, an employee medical care plan, and a lifetime pension arrangement, the middle class in Hong Kong may experience financial hardship – an “poverty phenomenon” – after retirement. The characteristics of the phenomenon – or the hardship that the middle class faced include the expenses for property management fees, Government Rent and Rates on their fully paid-up valuable properties, and low-interest income from their steady investments such as fixed deposits or bonds. Due to an extended life expectancy and insufficient cash flows, they may face a lower standard of living. Dr. Chan said he had already noticed the phenomenon when he was the Deputy Chief Executive of the HKMA and had figured out a relief solution for it – utilising the lacking liquidity assets to create a lifelong cash flow. This brought the talk to the introduction of the product “HKMC Retire 3” offered by The Hong Kong Mortgage Corporation Limited (HKMC). Mr. Li Ling Cheung Raymond, former Chief Executive Officer of HKMC, who once worked with Dr. Chan, was invited to be Special Guest for the Dialogue, to share the design and advantages of the product.
Mr. Li joined the HKMA in 1993 and served the institution for more than thirty years. During his tenure, he was transferred to the HKMC, serving as Chief Executive Officer until his retirement at the end of 2024. The “HKMC Retire 3” is a flagship product developed and promoted by Dr. Chan and him while they both served in their positions at the HKMA and HKMC. HKMC Retire 3 consists of three individual products aiming to provide lifetime cashflow: the Reverse Mortgage Programme, the HKMC Annuity Plan, and the Policy Reverse Mortgage Programme. Dr. Chan and Mr. Li detailed the highlights of these products: the Reverse Mortgage Programme allows borrowers to receive monthly payouts while protecting against the volatility of property prices and interest rates; the HKMC Annuity Plan issues monthly annuities based on the amount of the premium paid, for throughout applicants’ entire lifetimes; and the Policy Reverse Mortgage enables monthly payouts by mortgaging applicants’ life insurance policies. Dr. Chan stressed that inflation diminishes the purchasing power of one’s savings, and because there is no high-return investment with low risk, a longer life expectancy poses financial risks. He suggested several ways to protect assets – no greed and conformity, stable cashflow, diversified investment, and living within your means. In the Q&A session, Professor Lo Luk Ming asked the first incisive question among those raised by the professionals. The questions were about enduring power of attorney, the right of inheritance, lump-sum payout for specific purposes, and comparison with similar products, etc. Dr. Chan and Mr. Li meticulously provided their answers, and Dr. Chan concluded the talk by wishing participants a wonderful elderly life and enjoying financial freedom. Enhancing Sleep Quality with Chinese Medicine Therapy The afternoon session was delivered by Professor Lin Zhixiu, Director of both the School of Chinese Medicine, CUHK, and the Hong Kong Institute of Integrative Medicine, CUHK, and a fellow of Chung Chi College, who shared his insights on “Enhancing Sleep Quality with Chinese Medicine Therapy”. To provide the audience with a basic understanding, Professor Lin has introduced the definition of insomnia, Chinese medicine therapies for insomnia, sleeping-aiding medicinal soups and an herbal pouch, and preventive measures for common cases. Professor Lin explained that, from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, insomnia is caused by inadequate nourishment or unrest of the heart-spirit, and it is not only limited to being awake all night, intermittent sleep, or difficult falling back asleep after waking are also types of insomnia. Insomnia often leads to symptoms such as exhaustion, mental disturbance and heart-spirit restlessness, and amnesia, thereby hindering patients’ living quality. In summarising common traditional Chinese medicine diagnoses, Professor Lin pointed out that the causes of insomnia are related to emotions, diet, and physical condition, and subsequently introduced various patent Chinese medicines, acupoint massage techniques, medicinal soups, and herbal pouches to aid sleep. He also prepared twenty pouches for random distribution to the onsite audience. Professor Lin also addressed insomnia cases related to dining practices, work stress and physiological factors of the elderly, and offered some practical daily life tips. In the Q&A session, Professor Lin clarified some misconceptions about medication use, dietary therapy, and lifestyle habits, and added that since everyone's constitution differs, the effects of Chinese medicine prescriptions and medicinal soups vary During his talk, Dr. Norman Chan explained the financial issues that Hong Kong’s retired middle class may face. 7 至善對話 IN DIALOGUE WITH EXCELLENCE 6 盼從生命看醫道 Seeking the Way of Medicine Through the Lens of Life Healing sickness and saving lives is regarded as a doctor’s calling, and Venus Yeung, a third-year student in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery programme, understands this well. Beyond studying medicine, she has taken part in several overseas medical support and health education services, hoping that through engaging in the lives of different communities, she can better understand the responsibilities of a doctor and her own mission. Q: Why did you choose to study medicine? A: Since secondary school, I have been deeply interested in issues surrounding life and death. Perhaps it is because doctors have the opportunity to confront death up close, which makes the profession feel unique and better able to engage with this topic—one of the reasons I became interested in studying medicine. In addition, I love traveling and enjoy appreciating beautiful scenery and learning about different cultures. However, being able to travel depends on having good health. Therefore, I hope to become a doctor and, by helping Professor Lin Zhixiu explained the causes and treatments of insomnia from Chinese medicine perspective in an accessible way. Venus has been served in Guangxi, Indonesia, Nepal and Vanuatu, gaining valuable experience in overseas medical support and health services. Venus will take part in a ten-day visit organised by Chung Chi College in Cambodia this June, to learn about and support AIDS orphans there. others maintain their physical and mental well-being, enable people—regardless of wealth—to have the opportunity to explore the world and experience its beauty. Q: Could you share some of your overseas service experiences? A: Most of my service experience comes from Medical Outreachers, a student-led organisation founded in 2009 by medical students from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The University of Hong Kong. It provides medical support and health education services locally, in Chinese Mainland, and overseas. At the time, I was part of the mainland service team and traveled three times between 2024 and 2025 to Baise in Guangxi, where I participated in services with the Red Cross Society of China, supporting children with Thalassemia and their families. I also took part in the organisation’s overseas services. My first trip was in January 2024, when I conducted home visits in mountainous regions of Nepal, promoting basic hygiene practices such as handwashing and proper tooth brushing. In August of the same year, I went to Yogyakarta, Indonesia, where we provided health check-ups for returning migrant domestic workers and other local residents, and delivered first-aid training to primary school teachers. In addition to Medical Outreachers, I have participated in projects organised by the Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC). This center is a collaboration between CUHK and the University of Oxford, focusing on disaster and humanitarian response, as well as climate change and health. My first project with them was in June last year, when I traveled to Vanuatu to distribute relief supplies. As one of the countries most severely affected by climate change and natural disasters, disaster response is an urgent concern for the local population. Q: What have you learned from these overseas service experiences? A: First and foremost, I gained a clearer understanding of the realities of healthcare and hygiene in different regions. For example, in the mountainous areas of Nepal, basic personal hygiene knowledge and public health practices are not widespread. I needed to teach residents how to use cleaning products to wash their hands and brush their teeth, while also encouraging improvements in public hygiene, such as using proper sanitation facilities and separating living spaces for humans and livestock. In Indonesia, I also observed that people in the same occupation often suffer from a specific disease. Through these accumulated experiences, I gradually learned not to make assumptions or rely solely on my own perspective to determine the needs of patients and residents. For instance, when serving families of children with thalassemia in Guangxi, I initially planned to share more knowledge about the disease. However, I soon realized that, after years of living with it, they already had a deep understanding; what they truly lacked was financial support and access to suitable blood supplies. Similarly, in Vanuatu, a young girl frequently asked me about the distribution of relief packages. When I asked why, I discovered that she hoped to use one as a school bag so she would not have to carry her belongings in a plastic bag. These experiences made me realise that, as a medical student, my role in overseas service is limited. I am neither a licensed doctor nor do I have financial resources. Beyond offering basic health knowledge, what I can contribute most is companionship — something especially important for children. I have come to understand that I do not need to impose a predefined role on myself or assume what I ought to provide. Instead, I can learn from those I serve, such as understanding the real challenges patients face and the broader social contexts behind them — for example, the blood donation system and its operations in Chinese mainland are far more complex than in Hong Kong. Q: Could you share some of your thoughts about the future? A: I do not yet have a definite answer regarding my future medical practice, but I am inclined to work on the front lines, engaging directly with patients. By understanding their stories, I hope to truly grasp their needs and help them in a practical, grounded way. If I were to set an ultimate goal, I would hope to join Medecins Sans Frontieres to assist those with the most urgent needs, such as the injured and sick in war zones. What I seek is not merely an understanding of the pathology of different diseases, but also a deeper perspective on life gained through helping others. This is also why I frequently took part in overseas service.
