Lam Norman, Chair of the CCC Board of Trustees, stated that this donation reflects the Trust’s alignment with Chung Chi’s educational philosophy and serves as a tremendous encouragement to the Board and all the staff members. He added that excellent campus facilities provide a nurturing environment for students’ growth, helping to foster a sense of belonging and instil values — goals that the College is committed to achieving. Dr. Chan also expressed gratitude to Mr. Lau Kar Wah, a member of the Board, for facilitating this donation by the Foundation. Mrs. Carol Tsang: Giving Back to Her Alma Mater Another donor, Mrs. Carol Tsang, is an alumna of Chung Chi College. She graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) from CUHK, and later obtained her Master of Social Science from The University of Hong Kong in 1993. Even during her university years, she was committed to serving society. After graduation, she worked at Caritas Hong Kong and later served as a fieldwork supervisor in the Social Work Department at CUHK. Over the years, she has continued to support grassroots youth and elderly services through sustained donations to organisations such as Caritas Hong Kong, the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), and Breakthrough. During the initial stage of the COVID-19 outbreak, there was an extreme shortage of epidemic-prevention items. Mrs. Tsang worked tirelessly with various manufacturers and agents, purchasing and distributing batches of masks and test kits to social welfare agencies and Chung Chi College student hostels for urgent use. In addition, following the devastating fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po in 2025, Mrs. Tsang even promptly donated HK$10 million to support relief efforts for the affected residents. All this demonstrated her unwavering responsiveness to community needs. Mrs. Tsang is also passionate about arts and photography. She obtained a Master of Fine Arts from RMIT University, Australia. She is an Associate of The Royal Photographic Society (ARPS) of Great Britain and an artist of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana. She has used her artistic talents for charitable purposes, actively participating in charity exhibitions and auctions to raise funds for organisations such as Yan Chai Hospital, Yan Oi Tong, and the International Osteoporosis Foundation, contributing to healthcare, education, and social welfare initiatives. A long-time supporter of her alma mater, Mrs. Tsang has served on the CCC Board since 2010 and has consistently contributed to scholarships and development initiatives. Notably, she donated HK$4.1 million to support the nowcompleted Chung Chi Student Development Complex Project (D&G Redevelopment Project). Since 2021, she has served as Deputy Convenor of the Board’s Fundraising Committee and has played an active role in the planning, conceptual development, and design of Project E. Dr. Norman Chan expressed his sincere gratitude for her selfless contributions, noting that her generous donation of HK$20 million exemplifies the spirit of giving back to one’s alma mater. He added that a thanksgiving dinner will be held in early August to express appreciation to supporters of the College’s development. Pentecostal Mission Hong Kong & Kowloon: A Lasting Partnership In addition to the above donations, The Pentecostal Mission Hong Kong & Kowloon donated HK$10 million in this May to support major renovation works for the Pentecostal Mission Complex student hostels at Chung Chi College. 7 至善對話 IN DIALOGUE WITH EXCELLENCE 6 發現順德:社區文化保育 Discovering Shunde: Preservation of Community Cultural Heritage 劉力萌、楊思琪 Liu Limeng, Yeung Sze Ki 學院不時推出新的非本地服務學習計劃,鼓勵 同學認識香港以外的社會。 To encourage students to explore other communities beyond Hong Kong, Chung Chi College organises nonlocal service-learning programmes every year. Last December, the College held a 9-day “Shunde Cultural Preservation Community Service-Learning Programme”, where students delved into the profound Lingnan cultural heritage, recognising the intangible heritage there and the transmission of traditional culture in contemporary society. Q: What motivated you to participate in this Shunde service-learning programme? A: Shunde is a water town rich in intangible cultural heritage (ICH), such as Cantonese Opera, Guangzhou embroidery, bonsai, and needlework, which made us in Hong Kong and has a longstanding commitment to spreading the full gospel of Christ through different ministries. Its close relationship with Chung Chi College can be traced back to the late industrialist Mr. S. H. Sung (1917–2018). Mr. Sung obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Hong Kong in 1937 and later pursued further studies in the United Kingdom. After returning to Hong Kong in 1946, he entered the industrial sector and went on to manage Union Metal Works Limited and Unimet Investments Limited. Mr. S. H. Sung’s father, T.M. Sung, was one of the founders of the Pentecostal Mission Hong Kong & Kowloon. Following his father’s passing in 1958, Mr. Sung started serving as Chairman and Superintendent of the Mission and devoted his service thereafter. From 1976 to 2009, he was also a member of the CCC Board of Trustees, strengthening the close ties between the College and the Mission. The Pentecostal Mission Hall Complex, comprising the High Block and Low Block, originally served as the CUHK’s postgraduate residences. With a donation of HK$15 million from the Mission, the buildings were converted into undergraduate hostels in September 2002, becoming Chung Chi College’s ninth and tenth student hostels and providing over 410 residential places. With the passage of time, aging facilities, particularly in the Low Block, have necessitated major repair and upgrading works. In response, College managements visited the Mission last December to express gratitude for its longstanding support and to share the maintenance needs of the two hostels. The Mission’s latest donation of HK$10 million is a timely and active response to this need. Expecting to provide a more comfortable learning and living environment with prayer and meditation space, the donation stands as a testament to the partnership between the Mission and Chung Chi. Chung Chi College Secretary Dr. Tong Wing-sze and her colleagues visited the Pentecostal Mission Hong Kong & Kowloon last December, expressing the College’s gratitude for their support and sharing the maintenance needs of the student hostels, the Pentecostal Mission Hall Complex.

(Left) Local mothers from Shengping taught us sewing techniques and made tote bags; (Right) We conducted our service in the elders’ canteen, seeking intergenerational connection and exchange. want to experience its charm firsthand. Furthermore, the programme focused on how traditional community culture can survive amidst rapid urbanisation. This meant we were not just observers, but collaborators who could inject vitality into traditional culture from a youthful perspective, which was a truly valuable opportunity. Q: To truly integrate into the local context, what special approaches did you take during the service? A: We immersed ourselves in the daily life of the community, staying in local guesthouses and dining at the elderly community canteen. This down-to-earth approach allowed us to observe within the real local network. With the arrangements from our partners, Hao Space and Qichuang Social Service Centre, we participated in various workshops, interviews, and cocreation meetings to learn about cultural inheritance, intergenerational dialogue, and self-discovery. Q: Among the cultural experiences, which parts left the deepest impression on you? A: There were so many! Many activities allowed us to marvel at the unique aesthetics of the local culture. For example, in the needlework experience, we collaborated with local mothers from a women’s group to transform fabric scraps into tote bags, showcasing the wisdom of resource reuse and the spirit of neighbourly mutual support. In the Guangzhou embroidery art workshop, led by its inheritor, we witnessed the exquisite “silk splitting” technique. At the bonsai garden in Xijiao Village, we listened to Mr. Weng explain the oriental aesthetics of plants miniaturisation. Every bit of this journey has strengthened our determination to preserve and inherit the traditional Chinese culture. Q: What ideas did you bring to the Cantonese Opera inheritance exhibition you organised? What did you learn from working on the exhibition and participated in this service trip? A: The exhibition was indeed the most intense collision of ideas during the service trip. We visited the Shengping Opera Club and interviewed Mr. Lai, the Club President who is dedicated to guarding tradition, as well as Huang Yuan, a young instructor trying to innovate by integrating Cantonese Opera with modern teaching and pop culture. Addressing the debate on “Will Cantonese Opera disappear”, we curated an exhibition titled “This Sound, This Place”. We transformed abstract cultural disclosure into a tangible dialogue that could be touched, heard, and voted upon. This made us realise that cultural inheritance is not a black-and-white battle of ideologies, but a symbiotic ecosystem where the old and new coexist. The exhibitions, videos, and written records we left behind have become new assets for the community. For us, the most profound impact came from “learning by doing” - whether it was Mr. Lai’s decades of persistence, or the concentration and immersion of the local mothers, they prompted us to reflect on our own learning motivations and life values. We deeply realised that beyond the university campus, a vibrant and authentic community is also a vital place for education.
