Guest Speaker: Prof. KONG Siu Cheung, Director of Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology, The Education University of Hong Kong

Organizer: Dr. Paula Hodgson, Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research

Details: Apart from noting how students performing in the final examination, you may also find out how students have extended their knowledge in the course through using a text-mining system with a visualization tool. In this seminar, Prof. Kong shares the experience of EdUHK in the pedagogical use of a bilingual text-mining system in course delivery for analyzing student-generated text in learning management systems such as Blackboard and Moodle. The system incorporates a bilingual taxonomy of domain-specific keywords for an automatic identification and counting of matching keywords in student-generated text, and provides hierarchical visualization for an informative and interactive display of counting results of matching keywords. This pedagogical initiative effectively serves an alternative to evidently track students’ conceptual change in course learning. It is potential to promote teachers’ pedagogical decision-making and students’ reflective learning engagement in a data-oriented manner.
