Project Objectives

CLEAR provides Professional Development Courses (PDCs) to teachers and teaching assistants (TAs) here at CUHK. For relatively junior teachers new to CUHK and all postgraduate students who act as TAs, successful completion of a PDC is required under CUHK’s teaching and learning policy, the Integrated Framework for Curriculum Development and Review. The aim of this TDG was to develop materials to enhance the PDCs for teachers and TAs with high-quality resource materials.

Evaluation of outcomes

All materials were developed together with teachers who had been awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Exemplary Teaching and with TAs who were nominated as excellent by their departments.

The iterative nature of the development of the CD and the TA booklets ensured a great deal of revision and refinement.

One CD with two modules – one on lecturing and making presentations, and one on small-group teaching – was produced. The CD is used with teachers and TAs.

Nine modules were produced for TAs.
Module 1 Introduction to teaching and learning print
Module 2 Running tutorials in Arts and Social Science print + CD
Module 3 Running tutorials in Engineering and Science print + CD
Module 4 Demonstrating in a laboratory print
Module 5 Developing effective presentation skills print + CD
Module 6 Group project suggested resources
Module 7 Marking essays and other qualitative work print
Module 8 Reviewing literature to avoid plagiarism print
Module 9 Writing a short paper print

Dissemination of results & deliverables

  • Thus far, 548 teachers and 2002 teaching assistants from all faculties have completed all requirements of this certificated PDC.
  • The project informed the book:
Kember, D., & McNaught, C. (2007). Enhancing university teaching: Lessons from research into award-winning teachers. Abingdon, Oxon.: Routledge.
  • The project’s design and resources have been presented in several international keynote presentations in Australasia.
