Project Objectives

This study aims at improving nursing students’ self-reflection ability and skills in managing clinical situations by means of a structured learning programme and evaluating the effectiveness of a workshop with the use of videotaped vignettes and ongoing guided reflection in promoting self-reflection skills among the students.

Description of process and deliverables

Phase I: Develop the videotaped vignette and assess the students’ pre-workshop reflective skills
Phase II: Conduct the workshop with the use of self-developed videotaped vignette
Phase III: Practice the reflective learning skills in real clinical situations
Phase IV: Evaluating the evidence of reflection

Evaluation of outcomes

The 38 student participants (61%) who had attended the 3-hour workshop and practiced the reflective learning skills with the clinical teacher’s guidance in real clinical situation could demonstrate better reflective abilities in clinical learning and found the programme useful in helping them to put self-reflection into clinical practice. Nevertheless, some students raised concern over the barriers to their clinical learning, such as time constraint and busy working pace. Positive comments for future development regarding self-reflective learning in clinical practice were also elicited from the analysis of the participants’ narrative comments.

Dissemination of results & deliverables

The findings would be presented in referred journal and national /international conferences.
