Project Objectives

  • to identify the fundamental engineering knowledge that we want to introduce in the design projects;
  • to produce a database of good design projects for teachers to consider;
  • to understand the academic background knowledge and ability of students and to coordinate with other course teachers to avoid duplications in course content;
  • to conduct workshops for teachers and other experienced professionals to share their experience in guiding and motivating students in design courses.
  • Description of process and deliverables

    We have searched for similar course design in overseas engineering schools and obtained details information of their courses. The collected information would be used as a database for teaching staffs in charge of the design courses for reference in future. A meeting on the engineering design course has been conducted for information sharing. A number of teaching staffs who are teaching some fundamental engineering courses have been interviewed for collection of their comments on the expected background knowledge of the students taking their courses.

    Evaluation of outcomes

    The information collected would be maintained as a database and would be assessable by the teaching staffs. The design projects in each year would be accumulated in future. Workshops would be conducted regularly.

    Dissemination of results & deliverables

    It has been decided to launch the engineering design projects as elective courses before 2012. The engineering design projects would be introduced from 2010 and the projects would be finalized in 2010.
