Abstract

Promoting eLearning is one of the strategic developments in education of CUHK. Resources have been and will be provided for to encourage and support teachers in the development of eLearning courseware (e.g. micro-modules and MOOCs) and in adopting innovative pedagogies (e.g. flipped classroom, blended learning). Therefore, it is deemed necessary to conduct a comprehensive, empirical, evaluative study to identify the feasibility, levels of acceptance and educational values of eLearning as implemented at CUHK so as to ascertain the implementation strategies.

This project is aimed at

  1. Developing a framework and measures to evaluate eLearning courseware and eLearning pedagogies;
  2. Evaluating the eLearning courseware developed by CUHK teachers;
  3. Gauging teachers’ and students’ level of acceptance of eLearning;
  4. Identifying the educational values of the different eLearning pedagogies as conducted at CUHK, e.g. use of micro-modules, flipped classroom, blended learning, MOOCs; and
  5. Making recommendations on eLearning development and promotion at CUHK.
The project will enrich our understanding of the current use of eLearning and provide evidence which informs our future directions in promoting eLearning at CUHK. In terms of sustainability, one outcome of the project will be an evaluative framework which can be adopted for future use.

Project objectives

This project is aimed at
  • developing a framework and measures to evaluate eLearning courseware and eLearning pedagogies;
  • evaluating the eLearning courseware developed by CUHK teachers;
  • gauging teachers’ and students’ level of acceptance of eLearning;
  • identifying the educational values of the different eLearning pedagogies as conducted at CUHK, e.g. use of micro-modules, flipped classroom, blended learning, MOOCs; and
  • making recommendations on eLearning development and promotion at CUHK.

Activities, process and outcomes

To achieve the objective, activities conducted included compiling and piloting some criteria to evaluate eLearning courseware based on a literature review; designing a questionnaire to gauge teachers’ and students’ level of acceptance of eLearning (due to some unforeseeable circumstance, the administering of the survey was delayed); faculty-based sessions on eLearning and flipped classroom; and analyzing micro-modules produced by CUHK teachers (as examples of eLearning courseware) in terms of presentation style and usage.

Deliverables and evaluation

  • a list of criteria for assessing the quality of eLearning courseware
  • a questionnaire to gauge teachers’ and students’ views of eLearning usage and benefits
  • a report on the analysis of micro-modules in terms of presentation style and usage
  • a list of recommendations on eLearning development and promotion
  • eight faculty-based sessions on eLearning and flipped classroom

Dissemination, diffusion, impact and sharing of good practices

Dissemination was mainly in the form of the faculty-based sessions where the benefits of eLearning, its formats (e.g. flipped classroom) and pedagogical and technological support were delineated.
