Abstract

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has input resources for promoting eLearning strategies to enhance the efficiency of teaching and learning. Different funding schemes have been launched for teachers to apply to support the implementation of eLearning. The recent calls of three grant schemes, i.e., Teaching Development and Language Enhancement Grant (TDLEG), Courseware Development Grant Scheme (CDGS), and Micro-Module Courseware Development Grant Scheme (MMCDGS) have approved many applications which have proposed the development and usage of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). Being the central hub of providing various eLearning services in CUHK, the Centre for eLearning Innovation and Technology (ELITE) needs enhanced manpower and equipment to support these projects. In this proposed project, we aim to achieve several objectives:

  • equip ELITE with advanced AR/VR devices/equipment for sample demonstration and further application development;
  • enhance the professional development of the media production team and equip them with advanced knowledge and techniques in using AR/VR;
  • demonstrate and disseminate different teaching cases of using AR/VR to teachers; and
  • form a community of practice to sustain the usage and development of AR/VR

Brief write-up

Project objectives
  • equip ELITE with advanced AR/VR devices for sample demonstration and application development ;
  • enhance the professional development of media production team to equip them with advanced knowledge and technique in using AR/VR;
  • demonstrate and disseminate different teaching cases of using AR/VR to teachers; and
  • form a community of practice to sustain the usage and development of AR/VR.

Activities, process and outcomes

  • Sourcing and acquiring appropriate devices and software for AR/VR courseware production;
  • Attending seminars and workshops on application of AR/VR by media production team to incorporate the technology into courseware production;
  • Introducing to teachers the features and benefits of using AR/VR in their course design; and
  • Participating in an AR/VR Seminar on using AR/VR as a teaching tool.

Deliverables and evaluation

  • Two AR modules for the School of Life Science in which eighteen AR images were produced and used in-class. Positive student feedback was received.
  • Growing interest in AR technology – more requests for support on AR/VR courseware development
  • The production of four VR projects in progress

Dissemination, diffusion, impact and sharing of good practices

  • Organising an AR/VR Seminar attended by over a hundred teachers from different universities
  • Organisation of another AR/VR seminar in progress
