  • Abstract

Abstract

  • Background:

Acquiring teaching skills is essential for postgraduate students who will pursue academia. However, there is limited opportunity for postgraduate students in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science (DOVS) to obtain the relevant training and exposure. There is a need to set up a programme that provides the skill development of designing teaching courses, preparation of teaching materials, and an opportunity to develop pedagogical competencies while facilitating the learning experience of undergraduate students and supporting other academic staff’s teaching duties.

  • Methods:

our proposal consists of (1) a cross-discipline teacher apprenticeship programme, and (2) a teaching course design e-learning micro-module. Participants in the teacher apprenticeship programme will act as teacher-assistant responsible for teaching materials preparation and help with the smooth-running courses for undergraduate medical students, training ophthalmology specialists, and the community. Participants of the micro-module will be given the opportunity to design teaching courses and e-learning materials (teaching videos, gamified problem-based learning clinical cases, and surgical videos). The effectiveness of the project will be evaluated by Likert scale questionnaires and feedback from participants, medical students, and the students’ supervisors.

  • Potential:

the programme and module allow a refreshing exposure for postgraduate students in DOVS to acquire valuable skills for teaching development and research prospective.
