胡秀英植物標本館

尊敬的校友和各界朋友：

「胡秀英植物標本館」成立籌款計劃

為紀念胡秀英教授對植物研究的傑出貢獻，香港中文大學生命科學學院擬將胡教授生前建立的植物標本館命名為「胡秀英植物標本館」，以進一步增強現有標本館的功能和影響力。

生命科學學院的植物標本館是香港中文大學的一項重要資產，已在紐約植物園與國際植物分類學會共同建立的國際植物標本館索引中註冊。標本館現藏約38,000份植物標本，絕大部分由胡秀英教授本人搜集整理。

擬成立的「胡秀英植物標本館」將繼承胡教授的遺志，繼續為保存植物多樣性並探索其經濟用途而努力。現有的標本館位於香港中文大學科學館，將於2014-15年遷往新綜合科研實驗室大樓。我們正致力成立一個總額約港幣一千五百萬元的常設基金，以用於「胡秀英植物標本館」的科研、教育和社會服務工作。具體用途請參見附件Ａ。

各位的支持對「胡秀英植物標本館」的成立極其重要。我們會盡最大的努力尋求每一位校友和各界朋友的支持。所有捐贈，將悉數用於「胡秀英植物標本館」的擴建和營運。

適逢香港特別行政區政府於今年八月一日推出第六輪配對補助金計劃，所有在計劃開始首日及其後捐贈給中大的捐款（以存入銀行日期為準）將以先到先得方式申請配對補助金，俾本學院獲得額外款項撥充此常設基金。請盡早作出捐贈，以爭取更佳機會申請配對補助金，免稅收據將於其後繕發。

附件Ａ

胡秀英標本館常設基金的用途

A. 科研：
1) 記錄及考證香港及內地的植物、植被和經濟作物；
2) 收集和保存香港本土的受保護植物；
3) 鑒定經濟和藥用植物；
4) 數碼化現有館藏標本並建立相應的植物資訊資料庫。

B. 教育：
1) 建立訪客中心以介紹胡教授的經歷和成就，並利用數碼圖像，展板和標本多方位多主題地展示館藏植物標本；
2) 建立和維持教育及資源網站，包括香港的植物和植被<hkflora.com>，野草<Mikania.net> 和經濟植物<plantuses.com>；
3) 開發相應的植物鑒定及用途軟件；
4) 開辦遙距網上及自費課程；
5) 照顧弱勢學童認識植物的義工計劃；
6) 出版書刊並在社區宣傳植物生物學知識。

C. 社會項目：
1) 成立標本館之友（包括但不限於捐贈金額達港幣一萬元或以上的捐贈者），並開展多種活動，如參觀植物園和苗圃，專業研討會及公開講座；
2) 其他活動：胡秀英知識之橋和植樹計劃。

The Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Establishment of the Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium – We Need Your Support

To recognize Professor Hu’s contributions to botanical research both locally and internationally and to further strengthen the role of the herbarium established by Professor Hu, the School of Life Sciences proposes to name it the Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium, after Professor Hu.

The Herbarium in the School of Life Sciences is a major asset to the University. The herbarium is registered in the Index Herbariorum, a global directory of public herbaria managed by New York Botanical Garden in collaboration with the International Association of Plant Taxonomists. Its collection contains about 38,000 plant specimens, mostly collected and archived by Professor Hu. The proposed Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium will continue Professor Hu’s efforts in documenting plant biodiversity and exploring its economic uses. This herbarium now situated in the Science Centre will be expanded and relocated to the the new Centralized General Research Laboratory Complex in 2014-15. We are now raising an endowment fund of HK$15 million, which will be used in the research, education and public programmes. Details can be found in Appendix A.

Your support is of paramount importance. Our goal is to seek maximum participation from our alumni and friends, and all donations, in any amount, will make a difference. All contributions to these efforts will go towards the development and the expansion of the Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium.

It so happened that the HKSAR Government launched the sixth round of the Matching Grant Scheme on 1 August of this year. All donations bank-in on or after the first effective day will be eligible to apply for the matching grant on a first-come-first-served basis. Should your donation be able to reach us as soon as possible, it will definitely help maximize the available funding towards the endowment fund. Tax-deductible receipts will be issued afterwards.

If you share our vision and would like to support the Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium, please complete and return the enclosed donation form to us. Names of donors/organizations with donation of HK$50,000 or above will be inscribed in a plaque to be mounted in the Herbarium in the new Life Sciences Building. Appendix A

Use of Endowment Fund for the Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium

A. Research:
1) Documentation of the flora, vegetation and economic plants in Hong Kong and mainland China and research into their properties.
2) Collection and preservation for conservation of native flora.
3) Research on authentication of economic and medicinal plants.
4) Digitization and computerization of the existing collection to form an internet-accessible database, and to provide a web-based search mechanism through an online botanical information system.

B. Education:
1) Establishment of a visitor center to illustrate Professor Hu’s career and achievements, and to display various themes of the plant collection using computerized images, poster exhibits and specimens.
2) Construction and maintenance of education and resourceful websites, particularly the websites on Hong Kong Flora and Vegetation <hkflora.com>, weeds <Mikania.net>, and economic plants <plantuses.com>.
3) Development of computer applications for plant identification and use.
4) Development of internet courses including self-finance for alumni and teachers.
5) Volunteer programmes for underprivileged students.
6) A publication programme to popularize plant biology knowledge in the community.

C. Public programmes:
1) Formation of the Friends of the Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium (including but not limited to donors with contribution of HK$10,000 or above) to support activities such as outings to gardens and herbaria, professional workshops and public lecture series.
2) Other social activities, such as “SY Hu living bridge to knowledge” and “theme plantations.”
