FINA3210A Risk Management and Insurance, FALL 2024

Group Project and Presentation

After we finish the legal principles of risk and insurance lectures, you will be equipped with the conceptual tools to examine the mini cases available in annual reports of the Insurance Complaints Bureau (https://www.icb.org.hk).  You are expected to review those cases and choose two of them (or one local and one overseas) to analyze and compare. You may also find other sources of insurance cases for such purpose. Starting from this term, you may also find other sources of insurance cases for such purpose, if you want to explore broader commercial & business (instead of personal) insurance disputes.  To avoid duplicates, you have to let me know your case(s) choice beforehand. For ICB cases, please indicate the Case # and Year.

Some keyword to use when searching for related cases (https://www.icb.org.hk/en/searchfile.php?): Marine; Pet; Household; Travel; Motor; Life; Critical illness; Hospitalization; Personal accident; Hospital income policy¡K

You will work on this project in a team of 6-7 members.  (Please inform me of any voluntary swaps within one week from the random draw.)  Each team is expected to make a presentation for about 8-10 minutes, and then allow approximately 1 minute for questions and answers. You also should plan to use either PowerPoint or other tools for your presentation, and provide hard copies of the presentation slides for the instructor (and the TA).

In addition, each team is expected to submit a written report (around 10 pages) no later than 23:59PM on DEC 12. I encourage you to submit it whenever you feel it is done, so as to avoid the busy time schedule at the end of the semester.

Several Rules to Note for the GROUP project:

1. The maximum scores for presentation and written report are 100 each. Plus, you can earn (1) at most 10 team-building credits and (2) at most 10 early case selection credits, if the team leader of your group send me an email (with all team members cc¡¦ed) regarding (1) your team composition and team leader and (2) your case selection by SEP20. The team-building credit and early case selection credit will decrease 1 point after each week.  For example, if you notify me your team composition by SEP27 and your case selection by OCT 4, you will earn extra 9 team-building credits and 8 case selection credits!

2.  There is no dress code during your presentation.

3. There is no required number of presenters.   Please coordinate among group members for a fair division of labor while doing your mini case presentation and written report.  (Severe free-riding cases should be reported to the instructor.)

4. For case presentation, please indicate what happens; what are both parties' opinions; what is ICCB committee ruling; and more importantly, what is your group's viewpoint?  Do you support ICCB's opinion?  Why or why not?  You are supposed to finish the presentation between 8 to 10 minutes.  If you use more than 10 minutes (or less than 8 minutes), you will automatically lose 10% of this part of grade per minute over time.

5. For written report, discuss the insurance claim dispute cases you (and your classmates) present in the class.  In addition, please also offer some extended discussions such as: What you have learned from those cases?  What should be done to resolve insurance disputes? What can be done to reduce number of disputes?  You can provide more supported analyses (and reference websites, articles, etc.) if warranted, but please confine it to 10 pages, excluding references, appendix, etc. (Deadline: DEC 12).

6. Attendance is required.
