e.g. In conclusion, Japan’s initial modernization at social, economic,

and political levels was due to the Meiji period. Imagine that the Meiji

era never existed. Would Japan still have maintained its complete

isolationist policy? Would Japan be a little known, underdeveloped

Third World nation? Of course, this is just supposition, but it merits

speculation.
