CUHK hosted for the first time a Gordon Research Conferences (GRC) meeting on “Salt and Water Stress in Plants” from 24 to 29 June 2012.

GRC is a world renowned organization that provides an international forum for high level academic exchange in the fields of biological, chemical and physical sciences. It was initiated by Dr. Neil E. Gordon of the Johns Hopkins University in the late 1920s, and organizes almost 200 meetings every year in different cities in the US, Italy and Switzerland.

This meeting was chaired by Prof. Julian I. Schroeder from the University of California at San Diego and Prof. Teun Munnik from the University of Amsterdam. Prof. Zhang Jianhua from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the School of Life Sciences, served as the local Co-organizer of the meeting. The event brought together 150 top-notch scientists from universities, research institutes and industries worldwide, to present and discuss their latest research accomplishments on identifying individual biological mechanisms, genes and networks that plants require in order to survive under abiotic stress. The main focus of the meeting was to formulate long-term strategies for improving stress tolerance of crops to enhance food and green energy production for the increasing world population.

香港中文大學於2012年6月24至29日首次舉辦戈登學術會議(GRC), 會議主題為“植物的鹽分和水分脅迫”。

GRC是世界知名的組織,它提供了一個國際論壇,給生物、化學和物理科學領域作高水平的學術交流。它由霍普金斯大學的Dr. Neil E. Gordon在1920年末創辦,每年組織近200次會議,在美國、意大利和瑞士等地不同城市舉行。

是次會議由加州大學聖地牙哥分校教授Prof. Julian I. Schroeder及阿姆斯特丹大學教授Prof. Teun Munnik主持, 並由香港中文大學生命科學學院張建華教授擔任香港協辦人。本會議匯聚了150名來自世界各地大學、科研機構和工業界的頂尖科學家,發表並討論了他們最新的研究成果,以鑑定在逆境下生存的植物所需要的不同生物機制,基因及網絡。會議的主要焦點為制定長期的策略,通過提高作物的耐逆力, 提升糧食和綠色能源的供應, 以滿足日益增長的世界人口對糧食的需求。
