CUHK Student Awarded 2002 Rhodes Scholarship
Miss Lok Man
Yin, Frances, a graduating student of The Chinese University of Hong Kong,
has been chosen as Hong Kong Rhodes Scholar for the year 2002.
Frances is currently a final-year student
majoring in Chinese Language and Literature at The Chinese University of
Hong Kong and will complete her Bachelor of Arts study by June 2002.
She will be leaving for U.K. to start her study in law at the Oxford University
this autumn.
Frances has demonstrated herself as
a person of high intellectual ability, and has maintained an outstanding
academic record throughout her university study, winning many distinguished
scholarships. Apart from the academic work, Frances is a young woman
of integrity, with a mature and outgoing personality. She enjoys interacting
with people and has actively participated in extra-curricular activities,
in particular, the various debating competitions. Her good command
of English was particularly impressive during the interviews for the award.
The Rhodes Scholarships were established
after the death of Sir Cecil Rhodes in 1902, and were originally allocated
to students from the Commonwealth countries, the United States and Germany.
Since the inclusion of Hong Kong to the list in 1985, one student from Hong
Kong has been able to be honoured as Rhodes Scholar each year. The
aim of the Scholarships is to reward scholars of outstanding personality
as well as strong intellectual ability. The Scholarship is tenable
for a period of two years and may be extended for the third year. It
covers all University and College fees, one round-trip air ticket to U.K.
and a personal allowance.
