C N Yang Archive Launched at CUHK
The C N Yang Archive was launched today at The Chinese University of
Hong Kong as Professor Yang Chen Ning, Nobel Laureate in Physics and Distinguished
Professor-at-Large of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, presented to
the University the manuscripts of his two most important papers, which
have shaped physics in the latter half of this century. Professor
Yang, Professor Arthur K C Li, Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University
and Dr David Sin Wai Kin, Member of the Council of the Chinese University
officiated at the Launching Ceremony.
The C N Yang Archive exemplifies the unparalleled and outstanding contributions
that this prominent theoretical physicist has made to the study of physics.
The Archive will contain the many medals, including the prestigious Nobel
Prize, that Professor Yang won in a long and distinguished career, as well
as his personal papers, which Professor Yang kindly donated to the University
in 1998. The Archive will be a unique resource for historians to
study Professor Yang’s science and his times. In turn, the publications
(collected papers and biographies) that will eventually come out of the
Archive will inspire a wider community by Professor Yang's devotion to
science, his enthusiasm for the pursuit of knowledge, and his concern for
the betterment of mankind, especially for the modernization of China.
Professor Yang has long been associated with the Chinese University.
He first visited the Chinese University in 1964 and was appointed Honorary
Professor of Physics in 1982. In 1986, he became the first Distinguished
Professor-at-Large of the University. In these various capacities,
Professor Yang has given invaluable advice, support and leadership to the
academic development of the University. He was conferred the degree
of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, by the University in 1997.
