H.K. ng (1999 - 2011)
H.K. Ng was Chairman of the Department and Chief of Service
1999-2011.
He was one of the Founders of the Hong Kong Division of the International
Academy of Pathology (with Joseph Lee, W.P.Mak
and John Chan) . He founded the Association of Directors of
Pathology of China in 1998. He
also founded the movement for the Asia Pacific Pathology in 2000 which
evolved to become the Assembly of Asia Pacific International Academy of Pathology (APIAP).
He has served as a Vice President of the International Academy of Pathology (IAP) 1998-2012 and in 2011 took up
the important position of the Chair of the Education Committee.
He has been a major force in pathology education
internationally and was awarded the Gold Medal by the IAP in
2006.
During his tenure as Department Chair, publications in the
Department have progressed in a major manner. There
were 25 promotions in the Department during this period. His efforts
were recognised by the Chinese Society of
Pathology and Chinese Journal of Pathology for Distinguished Services
Awards. Foundations were built during the tenure and they led eventually to
the awards of the prestigious Theme Based Researches on liver cancer and nasopharngeal cancer to the Department.
His former Department Chair, Professor Joseph C.K. Lee
(1982-1999), founded the
University
Pathology Service (UPS) which grew under H.K. Ng from a small
practice to a major force of private practice in Hong Kong with gross
business of over HK$8 million a year.
H.K. Ng was very active in training pathologists from mainland
China. About 30 fellows from mainland China received training
at the Department during this period.
The Department underwent a successful accreditation exercise
by the National Testing Authority of Australia (NATA) in 2000. This
was the first ever international accreditation by a pathology laboratory in
Hong Kong. He subsequently led the Department through several rounds
of re-accreditation with NATA.
H.K. Ng founded the highly successful degree programme of
M
Sc in Medical Laboratory Science in
2009. Together with neurosurgery, he also founded the degree programme of M Sc
in Neurological Sciences in 2011.
H.K. Ng together with colleagues from the Department founded
the annual Cancer
Conferences since 2005. Together
with colleagues from neurosurgery and neurology, he founded the highly
successful annual
Brain
Conferences in 2003.
Together with colleagues from Chemical Pathology and Clinical
Oncology, he founded the State
Key Laboratory of Oncology of South China in 2006, where he served
as Associate Director until 2011. This is the first State Key
Laboratory on cancer and one of the earliest such laboratory established
outside mainland China.
H.K. Ng was Chairman of the Licentiate Examination
Subcommittee of the Hong Kong Medical Council 2002-2012.
