Education:

Medical Teaching:

Under the leadership of Margaret, Clinical Haematology Module has undergone a major revamp with emphasis on problem based approach in both lectures and tutorials since 2016. She not only designed the program but solicited a diversity of professional expertise in both clinical and laboratory haematology into the teaching team. The modern science component has been strengthened to enhance the teaching on genetic pathogenesis. Cytogenetics and genomics become critical and integral elements in the 2016 and beyond curriculum, setting the scene to prepare students for precision medicine, era ahead.

The lecture materials build on basic facts, conceptual frameworks, principles and practices in laboratory investigations, diagnostic approaches, scientific advances and clinical management. The part on transfusion has been critically focused on blood banking, clinical indications for using blood products, transfusion safety and transfusion reaction management.

A summing up tutorial will follow each theme-based lecture series to revise on student’s overall integrated knowledge in application on that particular theme. Similar format will be employed in the final examination so that students are always prepared to apply their knowledge to solve clinical problems as medical trainees now and doctors in future. Margaret also served in the HK College of Pathologists as Council member (2006-2010), Education Committee member for continuing medical education (CME) developments (2000-2005) and Examiner (1995-present).

Postgraduate Teaching:

Margaret has been supervising postgraduate students taking MPhil and PhD studies mainly on blood cancer research since 1995. Currently, 4 PhD students at different stages are working on various projects in the Blood Cancer Cytogenetics and Genomics Laboratory. She has been the external examiner for Master of Pathological Science Program of HKU Space and has also served as external examiner for MD and PhD students from University of Hong Kong.

Teaching haematological diseases in Chinese Medicine course:

Margaret has taught on haematological diseases in Chinese Medicine course ever since the course was established. It has been interesting and meaningful to blend in the Western medicine into the Chinese medicine. Different systems, concepts and approaches but same humanity-oriented pathogenesis-targeted relieving of the symptoms and treatment of the underlying causes. The theory in Chinese medicine is totally different but makes much sense like philosophy, restoring balances, building check-points, here and there. Rather abstract, generally viewed as a more gentle and subtle therapy widely accepted for relatively mild ailments, as alternative or last resort when western medicine fails and surrenders. With this understanding, Margaret integrated the basic concepts of blood diseases into the Chinese medicine curriculum, emphasizing the distinct role of laboratory medicine in diagnostics and clear objective therapy for objective diagnosis, but never undermining the role of Chinese medicine. Her taking a 6 months HA certificate course on Chinese Medicine for Health Care Professional is the best evidence for her respects in this traditional therapy.
