INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL OBJECTIVES
A Diploma of Occupational Hygiene programme was started in 1985 by the Department of Community and Family Medicine. The programme is open to the degree holders in science or engineering who want to upgrade their knowledge and skills in Occupational Hygiene and Health.
The importance of Occupational Health to the community in Hong Kong is being increasingly recognized. Hygienists and safety officers need to protect and promote the health and welfare of Hong Kong's greatest asset - its workforce. With the rapid social and economic changes in Hong Kong, occupational hygiene has evolved beyond the factory environment to include all occupations, and from physical, chemical and biological hazards to encompass psychological, behavioural, ergonomic and management aspects. These developments have reinforced the need for a local Master of Science (Occupational Hygiene) programme. The Master of Science (Occupational Hygiene) programme, which combines the current 1 year Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Hygiene course with three additional modules (Epidemiology in Occupational Health, Biostatistics in Occupational Health, and Advanced Occupational Hygiene), and a thesis, provides a much-needed teaching programme that forms an essential component in the training of professional occupational hygienists in Hong Kong and China.
Applicants are required to hold a Bachelor degree in science or engineering awarded by a local university, or an overseas university of acceptable standing and where English is the medium of instruction. In the case of candidates from non-English universities, the Graduate Schoolˇ¦s English language requirement for admission will apply.
CORE Modules for MSc (OH) Programme
OHS5001 Fundamentals of Occupational Health (First year)
A basic course for students intending to study in any discipline of occupational health sciences. General basic principles in the practice of occupational health and hygiene will be introduced. Other topics include applied toxicology, physical hazards, chemical hazards, biological hazards, ergonomics and occupational psychology.

OHY5002 Principles and Practice of Occupational Hygiene (First Year)
This is a follow-up of course OHS5001 for students who want to specialize in the discipline of occupational hygiene. A systematic approach to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of occupational hazards will be introduced and practical experience with instrumentation in the assessment of the working environment will be emphasised.
Assessment: Written Examination
Prerequisite: OHS5001 Fundamentals of Occupational Health.
OHY5003 Practical and Project Work in Occupational Hygiene
Each student is required to complete a number of practical and project assignments related to the practice of occupational hygiene. The assignments include workplace health hazard evaluations and reports, field practices and reports, and a project related to occupational hygiene. Students will need to demonstrate competency in utilizing knowledge and skills acquired during the other two modules. Presentations in class and written reports will be required for the assessment of performance in this module.
Assessment: Written Reports.
OHY5004 Epidemiology in Occupational Health (First Year)
This course is designed to introduce essential methods in epidemiology, as applied to occupational hygiene practice and research. The topics will include risk estimation, surveys and sampling, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, cohort studies, clinical trials and evidence-based medicine.

OHY5005 Biostatistics in Occupational Health (First Year)
Basic biostatistics methods, which are essential to the practice of occupational hygiene and simple research, will be taught. The topics will include nature of variables, descriptive statistics, comparisons between and among groups, common parametric and non-parametric methods, correlation and regressions. The use of common statistical software will be introduced.

OHY6001 Advanced Occupational Hygiene (Second Year)
This course emphasizes on the application of knowledge and skills acquired during the basic course in practice. Visits and attachments to various service units will be arranged. Case discussions, practice audits and problem-solving exercises will be emphasized and there will be frequent interactions with the instructors.

OHY6002 Protocol Development (Second Year)
This is a practical course to train students to develop the technique in protocol writing, leading ultimately to the conduct of their research project and the write-up of their thesis. This course involve the application and synthesis of knowledge acquired in the other courses.

OHY6003 Project Work and Report (Second Year)
Each student is required to complete an individual project on occupational hygiene under the direction of a supervisor utilizing knowledge and skills acquired during the master programme. Students will be required to make regular presentations on the progress of their projects throughout the course, and to submit a thesis at the end of the programme.

All students are expected to take two years (minimum) to finish this Master's programme. Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma/Diploma in Occupational Hygiene who entered the MSc (OH) programme will be exempted from (OHS5001,OHY5002 and OHY5003) in their Year One but are still required to take OHY5002 and OHY5003. They may finish the programme in 3 terms.
Graduation requirements
Attendance of at least 80% of the scheduled lectures, seminars, tutorials and visits.
Satisfactory
completion of all the component of the modules. Passing all the assessment tests in
accordance with the graduation requirements of the
Graduate School. [The overall GPA requirement for
graduation is a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 ]
In addition, students have to comply with the requirements of proficiency in information technology (IT) before they can be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma, as stipulated by the Graduate School.
English (supplemented by Cantonese)
DATE, TIME AND PLACE OF CLASSES
Regular lectures and tutorials will be held on Wednesday afternoons. A number of additional sessions on project work, statistics, computing and other topics will be scheduled. Visits and occasional laboratory work will take place at the same time. The meeting place is at Seminar Room/Lecture Theatre, 2/F., Clinical Sciences Building, Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin, N.T.
The Department of Community and Family Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong has members of staff (including Honorary Lecturers) qualified in all the major aspects of the course. Experts from other Departments of the University, from other tertiary institutions, from Government and from Industry will also be involved in some aspects of the course.
Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma programme may also be involved in tutoring candidates.
Tuition FEES
HK$100,800. per annum (in 4 installments)
Fees paid are not refundable or transferable.
