Research Activities In The Department

The Department's research activities focus on health problems in populations groups, in the community and on patients attending clinics.

A. Research in Community Medicine

D. The following are the main research activities in which the department has played a leading role:
  1. Gerontology:

The department has established cohorts of elderly populations for observational studies and has investigated a number of issues in mortality, disability, common health problems, successful aging and active life expectancy in old age.

  1. Women's health research:

The department plays a key role in research in women's health. Members of department particpate actively in activities of The Centre of Research and Promotion of Women's Health.

  1. Occupational health research activities including:

Musculoskeletal problems at work
Human-computer interface
Chemical hazards in the printing industry
Neurobehavioral studies for organic solvent toxicity
Noise induced hearing impairment
Asbestosis, silicosis, byssinosis
Occupational accidents and injuries
Outcomes of occupational injuries

  1. Environmental health research activities including:

Air pollution and respiratory health
Air pollution and immunity,
Air quality and hospital admission/mortality
Health problems associated with swimming at beaches and
Environmental epidemiology and disease mapping

  1. Epidemiology of diseases have recently included Geographical distributions and risk factors for:

Ischaemic heart disease
Cancer
Chronic/recurrent headache
Hepatitis A & B

  1. Health services research activities including:

Health care needs assessment
Health services and programs evaluation
Occupational health services needs assessment
Factors affecting prescribing of pharmaceuticals
Health service utilization of school children
Role of family physicians in health care system
Health surveillance of school children

  1. In primary care research activities

The department has initiated and collaborated in: morbidity survey on common diseases and complaints, (urinary tract symptoms and incontinence, allergic rhinitis), sero-epidemiology of Hepatitis A and B in adolescents, patients expectations, diabetes education, neurasthenia, women's health, continuing education for family practitioners, prescribing behaviour among practitioners and patients, inappropriate utilixation of health services and patient drug compliance for chronic illness.
