When did you do the military service?
After completing the first year’s university study at
CUHK, I took two years’ suspension from July 2009
to May 2011 for the compulsory military service for
Korean adult male.
Why did you choose to join the army in
the middle of your university study?
I chose to make it before graduation because it would
be very hard to self-study or apply the knowledge
I had obtained in the army. I was afraid to lose my
university life experience and knowledge after the
military service. If I did the service after graduation, it
would be much more difficult to find a job. That’s why I
went to the army in the middle of my university study.
What were your duties in the army?
My main duty in the army was using GPS (Global
Positioning System) coordinates for the artillery, so
I was trained for it although I didn’t need to do it all
the time. More often, I was required to do many other
chores like cleaning, taking care of storage or carrying
out maintenance. And I had to guard in the daytime
and at night.
What did you think of the experience?
The gain, and any loss?
I learned how to build up a good relationship with
different people, because everyone in the army had
a different background. That was one of the most
difficult things, but it was also the biggest reward
I gained from this unique experience. When I just
returned to normal life, I was afraid to be part of
society because I could speak English and Chinese
before I went to the army, but I had forgotten most of
those languages after I finished the military service.
As I didn’t study or speak English for two years, it
was very difficult for me to take English courses at
university. It was hard to read or write in English
either, which made it more challenging for me to adapt
to normal life again. However, I had confidence in
myself that I could adjust well because I have finished
one of the most difficult duties in the world. I might
have lost many things because of the military service,
but it also gives me confidence which enhances my
can-do attitude. So unlike my university life before the
military service, I have become more mature, active
and courageous now. This view is also shared by my
family and friends.
