Cai Yuanpei ½²¤¸°ö (1868-1940)

Born in Zhejiang province, was a renowned educator and democratic revolutionary. He was brought up to be a traditional scholar well-versed in Chinese classics; disappointed by the reformist failure in 1898, he resigned from the Hanlin Academy of the Qing government to play an active role in the revolution to overthrow the imperial dynasty. He spent three years studying at Leipzig University in Germany before returning home in 1911, aspiring to establish a modern education system in the newborn China. He is widely recognized for his service as president of Peking University (1917¡V1927), during which he advocated inclusiveness and independent thinking.
