Lin Wenyue 林文月
Lin was born in Shanghai in 1933, spending her first thirteen years there. Originally from Changhua in Taiwan, her family returned to Taiwan in 1946. She studied at National Taiwan University, eventually joining the faculty there. In 1969 she went to Japan to study at Kyoto University. Proficient in both modern and classical Chinese as well as Japanese, her prose and verse in Chinese have won numerous awards. Among other accomplishments, she has translated a number of Japanese classics into Chinese, including Yuan shi wuyu 源氏物語 [The tale of Genji] and Zhen cao zi 枕草子 [The pillow book]. Since her retirement from Taiwan University in 1993, she settled in Oakland, California and has taught at both the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford.
