Wu Zuxiang 吳組緗 1908–1994
He was born in Anhui province and studied Chinese at Tsinghua University. He was an active writer of essays and fiction in the 1930s; from the late 1940s he dedicated himself to teaching at universities and research on classical literature. A realist writer, Wu skilfully portrayed lives in rural areas in early-twentieth-century China with his unadorned and colloquial language, exhibiting genuine sympathy for the lower class.
