Jiang Wen 姜文 1963-

Jiang graduated from the Central Academy of Drama in 1984. A talented actor, he played leading roles in the films of famous directors, such as Xie Jin's 謝晉 Furongzhen 芙蓉鎮 (Hibiscus Town; 1986) and Zhang Yimou's 張藝謀 Hong gaoliang 紅高粱 (Red sorghum; 1987). In 1993, he wrote a script based on a story by Wang Shuo 王朔 and made his directorial debut with In the Heat of the Sun, which was a huge success at both domestic box office and international film festivals. In 1999, Jiang Wen finished his second film, Guizi lai le 鬼子來了 (Devils on the doorstep), an allegoric masterpiece that won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival but was banned in China.
