With the theme of the localization of Islam in China, this work is the first academic publication focused on Islam in the Chinese context ever published by the Chinese University of Hong Kong. It is also the first of its kind in Hong Kong as a whole. Its eleven articles cover various topics under the main theme: the historical development of the Chinese Muslim community; its adaptation and acculturation to local culture; the dialogue between Hui Muslims and Confucians; the impact of modernity on Chinese Muslims; and Western Christian missionaries’ understanding of Chinese Muslims. On the one hand, these articles reveal Muslim scholars’ self-understanding of their Islamic faith and related concepts. On the other hand, they reflect non-Muslim academics’ discourse and views on the subject concerned. Thus, this work serves to be a channel for dialogue and exchange, thereby contributing to the peaceful co-existence of different communities of faith. The collection of articles is sourced from two international conferences held in CUHK, namely, ‘Transmission of Islamic Culture and Education in China’ in 2009 and ‘Islamic Civilization in Multiple Perspectives’ in 2013.
