Student Hostel & Residences
Practical fire safety rules for halls and hostels—prohibited items, housekeeping, evacuation maps, and why propping open smoke doors leads to enforcement.
Living Safely in Hostels
-
No Dangdrous goods or open flames: Do not store flammable or explosive items; lighting candles, or using open flames for cooking are strictly prohibited in hostel rooms and public areas.
-
No smoking: CUHK is a smoke-free campus (Ref: Smoke-free Campus Policy).
-
Do not tamper with alarms, extinguishers, hose reels, or emergency lighting.
-
Keep corridors/stairwells clear— Do not place items in corridors, staircases, or near emergency exits to ensure quick evacuation during emergencies.
Policy Alignment
These rules align with major Chinese Universities' residence policies and FSD expectations.
Housekeeping that Prevents Fires
-
Bins: Place only in designated areas; never block exits or staircases.
-
Door closers: Keep smoke stop doors closed—wedging them open pose a serious life hazard.
-
Sprinklers: Maintain clearance (≥ 500 mm) below sprinkler heads.
-
Electrical safety: Do not overload power sockets; use only certified electrical appliances.
Evacuation in Your Hall
-
Learn your evacuation map and assembly point.
-
When the alarm sounds, exit via the nearest signed route; don't use lifts.
-
Tutors/wardens conduct roll call; wait for instructions.
-
Smoke Prevention Measures If trapped, seal door gaps, use wet towels to block smoke, and signal for help at windows. .
Enforcement & Penalties (Why This Matters)
The Fire Services (Fire Hazard Abatement) Regulation, Cap. 95F allows FSD to issue Fire Hazard Abatement Notices (FHAN) for hazards such as:
-
Propped open smoke doors
-
Blocked exits
-
Insufficient signage
-
Accumulation of combustible materials
Legal Consequences
Non-compliance leads to fines and daily penalties, and magistrates may issue Fire Hazard Orders/closure. Keep escape routes clear and doors shut—it's the law.
